Richard Rogers, Architect Behind Landmark Pompidou Center, Dies at 88

Richard Rogers, the Pritzker Prize-winning British architect whose inviting, colorful modernism forever altered the cityscapes of Paris and London, died on Saturday at his home in London. He was 88.



His son, Roo Rogers, confirmed the death. No cause was given.



With his striking designs for the tubular Pompidou Center in Paris; the vast Millennium Dome in London, which seemed to hover like an alien spaceship; and the brash Lloyd’s of London building, with its soaring atrium, Mr. Rogers turned architecture not just inside out but also on its head.



When he was awarded the Pritzker, architecture’s highest honor, in 2007, the jury cited his “unique interpretation of the Modern Movement’s fascination with the building as machine” and said he had “revolutionized museums, transforming what had once been elite monuments into popular places of social and cultural exchange, woven into the heart of the city.”

I missed this one when it occurred. The name only crossed my mind when I was re-shelving some of his books post-new flooring. TBH, I was a bit surprised to learn that the death had been as recent as it was.

Donald Newlove, a recovered alcoholic who wrote acclaimed, brutally unsentimental novels and a memoir, all with a common theme — drunkenness — as well as cheeky primers on reading and writing, died on Aug. 17 in Bethesda, Md. He was 93.

The cause was complications of a broken hip, said Lisa Brannock, his stepdaughter and closest survivor.

Mr. Newlove’s novels — among them “The Painter Gabriel” (1970), “The Drunks” (1974) and “Sweet Adversity” (1978) — were met with critical praise. Time magazine described “The Painter Gabriel,” his first, as “one of the best fictional studies of madness, descent and purification that any American has written since Ken Kesey’s ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.’”
