Ex-pope Benedict XVI asked for forgiveness Tuesday for clerical child sex abuse committed on his watch, but aides rejected allegations of a cover-up while he was archbishop of Munich.

Pope Frank says the obvious part out loud.

Pope Francis has apologized for the unimaginable abuse at the hands of Catholic priests carried out over decades in Canada at Indigenous peoples residential schools.

“For the deplorable conduct of those members of the Catholic Church, I ask forgiveness of the Lord,” the pope said, after a week of talks with various delegations who aired their grievances with the pontiff. “And I want to tell you from my heart, that I am greatly pained. And I unite myself with the Canadian bishops in apologizing.”

The meetings came after 215 unmarked graves with remains of children were discovered in the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc Nation residential schools in British Columbia. The school was run by the Catholic Church for decades and efforts and was eventually closed in 1978, after families said the clergy and Catholic educators there had a policy to extinguish the Indigenous culture and replace it with Catholicism.

The pope has expressed sorrow on behalf of the Catholic Church’s considerable problem with predatory pedophile priests, but he has rarely gone as far as he did Friday in calling the priests “deplorable” and in saying he was both ashamed and indignant over the abuses.

Will Pope Francis be the first pope to actually address the church's child rape scandal in a full and open manner? There's a Cardinal with the desire to take it on now in a position to do so. Here's hoping Frank doesn't fold and keep the worst of what they know gagged, the way his predecessors did.

If there is one open secret in the eternal city, it is that the allegations of clerical sex abuse in Italy have always been swept away, into the shadows of the Vatican.

The last three popes have had mixed reviews on their handling of the global scandal. When the worst of the abuse was coming to light, Pope John Paul II was too infirm and impotent to do anything about it. His successor Pope Benedict XVI was demonstrably blind to the problems coming in from the global church, and was implicated in the coverup in Germany. Pope Francis has done more than both of his predecessors in terms of reconciling the pain. But none of these leaders of the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics have done enough or what the victims want, which is that clerical child sex abusers are treated like secular ones: that they go straight to jail.

The idea that rampant abuse that has been exposed in the United States, Germany, Ireland, and elsewhere is also happening under the popes’ noses in Italy for decades has been something previous pontiffs have successfully kept a lid on. But an increasing drum beat from Italian sex abuse victims has sent a shockwave that has finally reached the Holy See. And the new head of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi, has just promised to break Italy’s so-far hidden sex abuse history wide open by implying that the seat of the Roman Catholic Church is directly involved in covering up the crimes in its host country. He says he will investigate what has until now been no-go territory, guarded by church insiders who were in some ways as powerful, influential, and dangerous as the mafia.

If Zuppi makes good on his laundry list of promises—including having academics aid in researching complaints that might have been buried in the Vatican archives, looking at ignored police reports, and listening to the until-now-stifled accusations of Italian victims—the Vatican will patrol its own backyard effectively for the first time since its special city state status was signed off by Benito Mussolini.. Any investigation of any regional Catholic church ends up on the pope’s desk in Vatican City. And Zuppi has promised not to hold back. “No coverup, no resistance from the bishops. We will take the beating we have to take and also our responsibility,” Zuppi said as he accepted the papal appointment. “We owe it to the victims; their pain is the priority. And we owe it to the Holy Mother Church.”

F***ing children is bad but criticizing the Catholic Church? Well that's just unforgivable.

A California priest who was defrocked in March after protesting the Catholic Church over its record on abuse says he was removed from the priesthood simply for being too critical.

“It hit me harder than I’d expected,” former Father Tim Stier, 73, told the Mercury News after his removal by the Vatican was disclosed last week. “I felt sad and angry. If I’d been raping kids, I wouldn’t be thrown out of the club.”

The former priest at the Corpus Christi Parish in Fremont, California, has been holding vigil for abuse survivors and the church’s marginalized believers since 2005, according to his blog. He was shaken after the 2002 bombshell report on clerical sex abuse and its cover up at the Boston diocese was exposed, on which the Oscar winning movie Spotlight is based, he said on his blog.

He has pushed for what he calls “structural reform” which he says means, “Include the Excluded: Women, Gay Persons, Abuse Survivors.”

In 2013, the Vatican opened an investigation into his protests and refusal to accept assignments at various parishes around the country after a local bishop lodged a complaint. At the time, he told National Catholic Reporter that the church needed to do more. He started releasing names of accused predator priests, and was asked by the California diocese to stop.

“Releasing the names of abusers not only tells people, especially survivors, that the church is serious, but it also can help those who have not yet come forward to have the courage to do so,” Stier told National Catholic Reporter at the time.

He told the Mercury News that he expected the Vatican to “come after his collar,” which finally happened earlier this year. Defrocking a priest removes him permanently from the priesthood and has happened to sexual abusers only a handful of times, including the 2019 removal of Theodore McCarrick after decades of credible allegations.

But Melissa Cheng and Mindy Dixon will have to come back to 22nd Judicial District court in St. Tammany Parish next year to testify for the prosecution when Travis Clark, who was then pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, stands trial on felony charges of obscenity and institutional vandalism.

Cheng and Dixon, who had faced the same two felony charges, entered a plea agreement with the state on July 26 — the same day that they were issued summonses to appear as witnesses for the state in Clark’s Jan. 9 jury trial.

This freak has a history.

In October 2020, New Orleans Archbishop Gregory Aymond conducted a ceremony in which he burned the altar upon which the trio had performed their “demonic” act, which had reportedly been viewed by passersby, hence the criminal charges.

Earlier in 2020 he appeared here when his archdiocese declared bankruptcy in the face of an avalanche of abuse lawsuits.

Also in 2020, Aymond flew aboard a World War II-era biplane on Good Friday to sprinkle holy water on New Orleans in order to stop the spread of coronavirus.

Of note, Aymond last appeared on JMG in June 2022 when when the FBI opened an investigation into local priests accused of trafficking molestation victims across state lines.

A possible papal successor is now accused of sexual assault.

Quebec Cardinal Marc Ouellet, once considered a front-runner to become pope, has been accused of sexual assault and is among a list of clergy members and diocesan staff named in a class-action lawsuit against the archdiocese of Quebec.

A woman identified as "F." in court documents tabled on Tuesday accused Ouellet of several incidents of unwanted touching, including sliding his hand down her back and touching her buttocks at a 2010 event in Quebec City.

"That day, more than during previous meetings, F. understood that she must flee Cardinal Marc Ouellet … the uneasiness she felt was more present than ever," the lawsuit said.

In the introductory application for class action filed on Tuesday, F. claimed to have been sexually assaulted by Ouellet between 2008 and 2010 and by Father Leopold Manirabarusha between 2016 and 2018.

And, of course, it's not just those two. It's not even one order of magnitude close.

Lawyer Justin Wee said Tuesday in an interview it's "inevitable" that the class actions his law firm filed will lead to more people coming forward against the church in the coming weeks.

In the first lawsuit, in which Ouellet is named, 101 alleged victims have accused about 88 priests or diocesan staff of sexual assault. The archdiocese of Quebec said in a statement on Tuesday it was aware of the allegations, but it declined to comment.

In the second lawsuit, against the Brothers of the Christian Schools of francophone Canada, 193 alleged victims have accused 116 members of that organization of sexual assault. The Brothers did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.

It's still happening. At least it sounds like the tip came from the Archdiocese but this sounds like it was pretty bad.

A 60-year-old priest has been convicted of child sex crimes in Wayne County.

Joseph “Jack” Baker, 60, of Wayne, was convicted of first-degree criminal sexual conduct sexual penetration with a person under 13.

Baker had been a pastor at St. Perpetua Parish in Waterford, Michigan since 2008. Before that, he was a pastor at St. Mary Parish in Wayne, associate pastor at Sacred Heart Parish in Dearborn, and associate pastor at St. Hugo of the Hills Parish in Bloomfield Hills.

“I want victims of abuse to know they have an advocate in the Attorney General’s office,” said Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. “We are committed to ensuring that every case of sexual abuse and assault is thoroughly reviewed and that whenever we are able to pursue justice for a victim, we do so aggressively and relentlessly. We must all commit to breaking down the walls of silence that so often surround sexual assault and abuse. Today’s verdict is long-awaited justice.”

The charge came after Nessel’s office received a tip from the Archdiocese of Detroit, which received the original report and immediately reported it to the lead prosecutor on Attorney General Nessel’s clergy abuse team.

Nessel’s office seized 1.5 million paper documents, 3.5 million electronic documents through warrants executed in October 2018 as part of its clergy abuse investigation. So far, the team has secured criminal charges against 11 people with ties to the Catholic Church and multiple convictions.

Retired St. Louis Priest Admits Possessing Child Pornography: James T. Beighlie, a retired St. Louis priest, pleaded guilty to federal charges and admitted possessing thousands of images containing child pornography.

For once there's a Catholic scandal that's just about huge amounts of stolen money, not rape and sexual assault. I guess that's a step up for them.

The man hired to clean up the Vatican’s messy banking debacle in 2015 says he was threatened and robbed and forced to resign. Libero Milone, the former CEO of Deloitte in Italy, was handpicked by Pope Francis to sift through years of murky book work to try to bring the Vatican Bank into compliance with international norms on money laundering. But he was forced out in 2017 amid allegations he was spying on clerics, a claim he denies.

Milone and his assistant have now filed a $9.25 million lawsuit against the Vatican, saying they were falsely investigated, stolen from, and harassed for doing the job the pope hired them to do. “We did the right thing, we never spied, we have been honest, we did what we had to do, but unfortunately what we had to do was very embarrassing,” Milone told Vaticanisti reporters in Rome after the suit was filed. “I didn’t know that I would find cardinals putting money in their pocket, but I found it. And I told [the pope].”

Milone was pushed out in 2017 by Cardinal Angelo Becciu, the Vatican’s former secretary of state, who Francis fired in 2021 after he was embroiled in a scandal of his own, accused of funneling $800,000 of the pope’s charity money for nefarious purposes, including allegedly buying false testimony against Australian Cardinal George Pell, who was convicted and acquitted of sex crimes. Pell was the Vatican’s no. 3 who ran the business affairs of the city state until his departure to fight sex charges back home.

Milone’s suit, which he filed with his assistant auditor Ferruccio Panicco, claims the Holy See is a “viper’s nest” of “financial malfeasance, papal hypocrisy about transparency and a reign of terror by bug- and-blackmail-prone gendarmes,” according to The New York Times, whose correspondent was also privy to a meeting with Milone’s lawyers in Rome.

Milone also uses the complaint to allege the Vatican fired him to keep secrets covered, including inappropriate use of charity funds and a healthy dose of dipping into collection money for personal gain. He also claims that a number of departments within the Roman Curia kept gold bricks and coins, but refused to give him access during the audit ordered by the pope.

The former auditor also claims that one cardinal kept around $250,000 in donations in a plastic shopping bag in his Vatican office. The same cardinal, Milone’s lawyer told reporters, “accidentally” deposited a quarter of a million dollars into his personal account rather than the charity account for which it was destined.

I bumped into this is from 2015 (Wayback link to bypass paywall). It compares the lifestyles of Benedict to Francis. Benedict was a fop of the lowest order, reveling in the luxuries that total control of billions of dollars can provide. How "Christian" of him.

In the reign of Francis—nicknamed the People’s Pope and the Pope of the Poor—luxury seems somewhat incongruous. Though he presides over coffers that conservatively are worth at least $8 billion, Francis seems uninterested in spending, a radically different approach from most of his predecessors. He isn’t anti-capitalist, but he emphasizes mindfulness in spending, whether personal or corporate.

Compare this to Benedict, nicknamed the Prada Pope, who had a raffish affect. He was snapped by photographers sporting sunglasses en route to meet Italy’s president (no confirmation as to whether they were Gucci or Serengeti, despite much squinting) and he even commissioned a private perfume maker to create a signature fragrance solely for his use. Sympathetic observers pointed out that he may have adopted this approach to offset his bookish shyness. Lacking the charisma of John Paul II, they said, he opted to make a symbolic, visual impact.

Once he stepped aside, though, such trappings were rapidly discarded by the Holy See. While Benedict had proudly brandished an iPod nano given him in celebration of the Vatican Radio station’s 75th birthday, his successor opted to donate his barely used iPad to a high school in Uruguay so it could be auctioned to raise much-needed funds. (The iPad fetched $30,500.) The most surprising thing about the fact that Francis summoned a German bishop (nicknamed the Bishop of Bling) for an in-person reprimand—after the man spent $31 million just to renovate his residence—was the fact it took him so long to notice there was a Bishop of Bling.

So let’s take a moment to compare the frugality of Francis with that of his forerunners, especially luxury connoisseur and Pope emeritus Benedict.

California opened up the time for suing over sexual assault and this has one Catholic diocese scrambling to declare Chapter 11 bankruptcy so they can remain open. The unanswered question is, of course, why in Hell(tm) should such a thoroughly evil institution be allowed to remain open?

The Diocese of Santa Rosa filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy on Monday in the face of potentially hundreds of sexual abuse lawsuits.

Bishop Robert Vasa had announced the filing was imminent in a media release Friday.

"This decision was made necessary due to the number of child sexual abuse lawsuits filed against the Diocese over the course of the past three years," Vasa said in the release.

Those suits were made possible by a 2019 California law that opened a three-year period during which victims of alleged childhood sexual abuse could file lawsuits that were otherwise prohibited under existing statute of limitation rules.

That period ended in December 2022 and since then the Diocese of Santa Rosa learned that it could be facing more than 200 such suits, Vasa said.

"These cases are too numerous to settle individually and so they have accumulated until the closing of the three-year window," he said.

This is the second wave of sexual abuse lawsuits that the diocese has had to face, according to Vasa, who said that it has already paid out roughly $35 million in settlements.

"Now, facing at least 160 new cases, with excess property depleted, with insurance for many of the years either non-existent or exhausted it is impossible to see any way forward without recourse to the bankruptcy protections our country makes available," Vasa said Friday.

Vasa said the decision allows the diocese, under court supervision, to bring all the parties together in one place to resolve the "claims fairly and finally."

"Fairly and finally" means for as little money as we can get away with.

Now there are accusations of hiding assets. It wouldn't shock me. The church rep talking about the truth has some real chutzpah. Maybe he needs a bit more humility as well as more concern over the victims rather than his precious church.

"This is a pattern already revealed in San Diego and other states where the statute of limitations was previously opened," said Anderson, whose firm represents 78 survivors of alleged abuse in the Diocese of Santa Rosa.

Anderson said in a news release Monday that the diocese is also facing a lawsuit over allegations that it has transferred assets in a bid to avoid accountability.

"Same old story, hide the offenders, the assets, and the truth about what they knew," Anderson said.

Vasa denied that claim Monday. "I can only say that nothing could be further from the truth," he said.

A documentary has been aired in Poland by a U.S.-owned network that claims that Pope John Paul II was a pedophile protector when he was a cardinal in Kraków. I have zero problem believing this. When the accusations blew wide open on Father Marcial Maciel in Mexico, including drugs, rape, sexual assault, fathering children, and on and on, JPII whisked him off to the Vatican where he was allowed to live out his days peacefully and without having to face retribution for a lifetime a crime and using his position to victimize multiple people. Since he was a pedophile protector when he was Pope, I wouldn't expect more from when he was a cardinal.

The conservative party that has close ties to the Catholic Church is, to say the least, losing their shit.

War? Inflation? Corruption? Nope, the big subject dominating Poland’s politics ahead of this fall’s parliamentary election is the legacy of John Paul II.

Although the canonized Polish pontiff has been dead since 2005, he’s become the hottest subject in Poland following an explosive documentary aired by the U.S.-owned broadcaster TVN, alleging that when he was a cardinal in his home city of Kraków, he protected priests accused of sexually molesting children.

That caused a collective meltdown in the ranks of the ruling nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party, which is closely allied with the powerful Roman Catholic Church.

U.S. Ambassador Mark Brzezinski was even summoned (later toned down to “invited”) to appear at the foreign ministry.

In a statement, the ministry said it “recognizes that the potential outcome of these activities is in line with the goals of a hybrid war aimed at causing divisions and tensions within Polish society.”

PiS also pushed through a parliamentary resolution “in defense of the good name of Pope John Paul II.”

“The [parliament] strongly condemns the shameful campaign conducted by the media … against the Great Pope St. John Paul II, the greatest Pole in history,” the resolution said.

The government and its affiliated media have launched a wide-ranging campaign about John Paul II. A gigantic picture of the pope was projected on the façade of the presidential palace in Warsaw. Public broadcaster TVP is now airing a daily papal sermon.

It’s all a political play, as PiS has found what it hopes will be electoral rocket fuel ahead of the election, said Ben Stanley, an associate professor at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Warsaw.

“Defending John Paul II offers PiS an opportunity to show they’re on what they claim is the right side of a dispute that poses authentic Polish values against something inauthentic and suspicious,” Stanley said.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki over the weekend accused the opposition of “being ashamed of the most important countryman in the history of the republic.”

It's not the first accusation of its kind.

Similar allegations are made in a new book by Dutch journalist Ekke Overbeek, “Maxima Culpa: John Paul II Knew,” which says when he was a bishop, John Paul II moved pedophile priests from parish to parish to keep them from being discovered.

Both the book and the TVN documentary are being attacked for relying on communist-era secret policy archives.

TVN, owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, responded by saying: “The role of free and reliable media is to report the facts, even if they are painful and difficult to accept.” It also stressed that the author of the documentary didn’t only rely on archived files, but also contacted people who had been abused by priests.

San Francisco’s Roman Catholic archdiocese filed for bankruptcy Monday, saying the filing is necessary to manage more than 500 lawsuits alleging child sexual abuse by church officials. The Chapter 11 protection filing will stop all legal actions against the archdiocese and thus allow it to develop a settlement plan with abuse survivors, Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone said in a statement.

“Cordileone will use every tactic and tool at his disposal to continue to run from the truth. He refuses to identify offenders in his diocese, he attempts legal maneuvers to eliminate the California Child Victims Act, and now he is attempting a last-ditch effort to hide the truth behind bankruptcy,” Jeff Anderson, an attorney representing over 125 survivors in the Archdiocese of San Francisco, said in a statement.

So just who is this shameless asshole who protects rapist priests from their victims?

Cordileone, the so-called “father of Prop 8,” was passed over for a promotion to cardinal last year after he defied Pope Francis by ordering that communion be denied to Nancy Pelosi.

As I’ve reported on multiple occasions, Cordileone is arguably the most anti-LGBTQ of US archbishops and that’s saying something.

In September 2021, he called pro-choice members of the US House “satanists.” In March 2021, Cordileone signed a statement from the US Conference of Catholic Bishops which lobbied the federal government against a funding for suicide hotline for LGBTQ youth.

Also in 2021, Cordileone condemned the COVID vaccines, declaring that they are “not really vaccines.” In 2020, he performed an exorcism at the California site of a civil rights protest.

The once-powerful Roman Catholic Cardinal Theodore McCarrick will not stand trial on charges he sexually assaulted a teenage boy decades ago, as a Massachusetts judge dismissed the case against the 93-year-old on Wednesday because both prosecutors and defense attorneys agree he suffers from dementia.

McCarrick, the ex-archbishop of Washington, D.C., was defrocked by Pope Francis in 2019 after an internal Vatican investigation determined he sexually molested adults as well as children. The McCarrick scandal created a crisis of credibility for the church, primarily because there was evidence Vatican and U.S. church leaders knew he slept with seminarians but turned a blind eye as McCarrick rose to the top of the U.S. church as an adept fundraiser who advised three popes.

Frankly, I think they want to go back to Pope Pius XII and Pope Leo XIII in the 19th century.  "Exploding Catholic heads" started with Pope John XXIII, suddenly the Church was open to new ideas.  The CM people want to go back to the Latin Mass, women in their place and no meat on Fridays.
