Trump attempts a Nixon ... on steroids.

I’m trying to make sense of how big a deal this is, how new this is and frankly just what to make of it. I was even put slightly on my guard since the reporting is in part from Bob Woodward and it is so reminiscent of the notorious 18 minute gap in Watergate tape recordings. But what the Post and CBS News report this morning is that in the records turned over to the January 6th committee there is a roughly eight hour gap in the record of the President’s actions and calls that maps almost exactly to the period of violent insurrection on Capitol Hill.

From 11:17 AM to 6:54 PM there is no record of the President making or receiving any phone calls and there is almost no record of his actions. This is in contrast to an ordinarily non-public “diary” of the President’s actions which records virtually everything he does. (Obviously it’s kept by White House staff rather than the President himself.) There has long been public reporting of various calls the President placed and received during these hours, including what has been characterized as a shouting match with Kevin McCarthy. But there’s no record of any of that. According to the report, committee investigators are trying to figure out whether the President and his colleagues switched to burner phones or some other backchannel during these critical hours.

What jumped out to me – and, again, perhaps I’m not thinking about this correctly – is that some of those phones were calls to the President. In particular, the call with Kevin McCarthy was reportedly from Kevin McCarthy. If there was a burner phone, did McCarthy have that number? Did he think that was weird? Seems weird to me.

I’m trying to make sense of exactly what this means. Clearly, it doesn’t sound good. But I realize that I don’t know enough about the precise procedures that create these records. I’m pretty certain that calls other than those through the White House switchboard get logged. But I don’t know a lot more than that about just how it works. The same applies to the diary of the President’s actions.

If this were still during the Trump administration the most likely answer would be that the White House and/or National Archives just didn’t turn over some of the documents. But given that it’s the Biden administration that doesn’t seem likely. Presumably the records in question simply don’t exist.

A judge ruled that Trump is likely a criminal (duh) and that multiple emails John Eastman has been trying to hold onto must be released to the Jan 6 Committee.

Former President Trump’s actions on Jan. 6 likely constitute attempted obstruction of Congress, a federal judge ruled on Monday.

“Based on the evidence, the Court finds it more likely than not that President Trump corruptly attempted to obstruct the Joint Session of Congress on January 6, 2021,” U.S. District Judge David Carter for the Central District of California wrote.

Carter ruled in the opinion that John Eastman, an influential conservative attorney who argued in favor of Trump’s efforts to subvert the election, had to turn over more than 100 emails to the House Jan. 6 Committee.

Eastman was responsible for crafting legal arguments that would have subverted the formalization of Biden’s win on Jan. 6. According to a December 2020 memo that Eastman wrote, then-Vice President Mike Pence would reject electoral vote slates from seven swing states that Trump lost, ensuring, the memo noted, that “President Trump is re-elected.”

Within a few hours of the judge’s order, Eastman issued a statement that he would not appeal the ruling.

Judge Carter, in a recounting of the plot to subvert the election, described Eastman’s role as supporting “illegality.”

“Disagreeing with the law entitled President Trump to seek a remedy in court, not to disrupt a constitutionally-mandated process,” Carter wrote.

He did find that out of 111 documents, privilege applied to 10 of them. The Committee will get the balance of 101.

“Our nation was founded on the peaceful transition of power, epitomized by George Washington laying down his sword to make way for democratic elections,” the opinion reads. “Ignoring this history, President Trump vigorously campaigned for the Vice President to single-handedly determine the results of the 2020 election.”

Bolton’s intervention compounds Trump’s difficulties amid a billowing controversy relating to seven hours and 37 minutes that are missing in official call logs. The gap occurs in records made for 6 January last year – the day of the violent insurrection at the US Capitol.

The Washington Post and CBS News disclosed on Tuesday that the House committee investigating the insurrection is looking into a “possible cover-up” of the White House records. It turns out the blockage of lawfully required presidential records was premeditated. Clearly multiple people in the administration must have been in on it.

In the days leading up to the deadly Capitol insurrection last year, Trump’s presidential diarist noticed that White House officials began providing fewer details on the then-President’s calls and visits, according to CNN. The report comes amid revelations that the White House call logs the National Archives turned over to the Jan. 6 Select Committee contained a seven-hour gap — despite previous reports of multiple calls that Trump took as the insurrection unfolded.

Trump’s presidential diarist revealed the scant details that the then-President’s White House officials produced days before the insurrection when reportedly testifying before the Jan. 6 Select Committee last month.

According to CNN, other witnesses described a similar scenario to the committee. They reportedly told the panel that Trump White House record-keepers were sharing less information during the same time period.

One source characterized White House record-keepers in the days before the insurrection as having been “iced out” in the days preceding the insurrection, according to CNN.

“The last day that normal information was sent was the 4th,” another source familiar with the investigation told CNN. “So, starting the 5th, the diarist didn’t receive the annotated calls and notes. This was a dramatic departure. That is all out of the ordinary.”

A member of the Jan. 6 House Committee states the obvious.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), who serves on the Jan. 6 Select Committee, on Sunday said the panel views the revelation of former President Trump’s seven-hour gap in his Jan. 6 White House call logs as a development that seems “suspiciously tailored to the heart of the events” surrounding the deadly Capitol insurrection.

Asked about the former president’s seven-hour gap in his White House call logs during an interview on CBS, Raskin characterized the revelation as a curious development.

“It’s a very unusual thing for us to find that suddenly everything goes dark for a seven-hour period in terms of tracking the movements and the conversations of the president,” Raskin said.

The committee is confident the records could reveal in greater depth how Trump and those in his inner circle "engaged in a criminal conspiracy to defraud the United States," earlier court filings stated.

The House voted 220-203 to recommend criminal contempt charges against former Trump administration officials Peter Navarro and Dan Scavino for defying subpoenas from the Jan. 6 Select Committee. The resolution’s passage refers contempt charges against Navarro and Scavino to the Justice Department.

Reps. Liz Cheney (R-WY) and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), both of whom serve on the Jan. 6 Select Committee, were the only Republicans to vote for the contempt resolution.

The vote comes two days after the House Rules Committee voted along party lines to advance the Jan. 6 Select Committee’s contempt referrals of the former Trump White House officials to the full House.

In his remarks during debate on the contempt resolution, Jan. 6 Select Committee chair Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) argued that it was “not conceivable” for Navarro and Scavino’s efforts to carry out former President Trump’s Big Lie to have “legally overlapped with their official duties.”

The lead seditionists and insurrection planners continue to run out the clock until the GOP can take the House.

The contents of a public figure’s private communication are almost always revelatory, and in the case of Donald Trump, a group of lawyers and peripheral figures in the former president’s orbit are currently engaged in a Herculean struggle to prevent an enormous trove of documents from ever coming to light.

The combined evidence is potentially staggering. Politico reported Monday night that Trump attorney John Eastman is stubbornly insisting his attorney-client privilege prevented him from turning over 37,000 pages of emails related to his work for the former president to the Jan. 6 committee. Simultaneously, Phil Waldron, a former Army colonel who has been instrumental in propagating the Trump campaign’s claims of fraud and is responsible for a widely circulated PowerPoint about how to overturn the election, is suing the committee to block it from obtaining his phone records.

Eastman and Waldron’s records may or may not contain incriminating ties between Trump and the events of Jan. 6, but going to such lengths to prevent the committee from getting ahold of them certainly arouses suspicion. This evidence will most likely come to light eventually. U.S. District Court Judge David Carter, who is overseeing the Eastman case, has already said that Trump and Eastman “likely” conspired to obstruct Congress from finding records about Eastman’s also-illegal plan to throw out electors from several states in the 2020 election. But what the Trump network can do here is stall, which is exactly what you’re seeing.

Eastman’s claim of lawyer-client privilege has allowed him to draw out a lengthy process of reviewing thousands of thousands of pages of communications to discern the ones he wants to go to court to keep sealed. So far, that’s around 3,264 documents, totaling 37,650 pages, according to Eastman’s lawyer. Carter has already had to order Eastman to speed up his review once, back in January.

According to court documents, Williams thought he was communicating with a 14-year-old girl, but it was actually a police officer. Thinking he was Snapchatting with a teen, Williams requested a video of her going to the bathroom.

Rickey Williams is the father of Riley Williams, the woman who famously bragged on camera that she had stolen Pelosi’s laptop with the intent of “selling it to Russia”.

Just days after the Jan. 6 riot, House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy told a fellow Republican lawmaker that he would recommend to then-President Donald Trump that he resign, according to audio of a call shared with MSNBC and aired Thursday night.

In the Jan. 10, 2021, call, McCarthy can be heard telling Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., that he planned to tell the president he should step down following the violent attack on the Capitol by a mob of Trump supporters.

McCarthy, R-Calif., also indicated that he thought impeachment would succeed in the House and possibly the Senate.

“The only discussion I would have with him is that I think this will pass, and it would be my recommendation you should resign,” McCarthy said in audio that aired on "The Rachel Maddow Show."

The New York Times on Thursday reported the contents of the call, which is included in the coming book “This Will Not Pass: Trump, Biden, and the Battle for America’s Future,” by Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns, due out May 3.

Hmmm.

The only thing that mattered to McCarthy and McConnell was hanging on to what power they already had.  I suspect they both believed the Big Lie would die down quickly, Trump would grow quiet and give up while those in the base who were motivated by him would transfer allegiance to them or to some other more controllable person.  The chat with Liz is cocktail party talk...telling her what he believed she wanted to hear.  He never meant it.
