After multiple miscarriages, Kiersten Hogan thought she would never be able to carry a pregnancy to term. She’d nearly given up hope when in June 2021 she learned she was pregnant. But at just 19 weeks — days after Texas’ Senate Bill 8 went into effect — Hogan woke up at 5 a.m. in excruciating pain. She called 911 and was instructed to unlock her front door and lay on the ground until EMTs arrived. “It was the longest 5 minutes of my life,” Hogan recalled on Monday.

Her water had broken. By the time she arrived at the hospital, she had lost too much amniotic fluid for her son to survive — but hospital staff didn’t tell her that. “They didn’t tell me much about my son’s chances of survival. But the one thing they did make clear repeatedly was that I should not leave,” a tearful Hogan said Monday. “I was told that if I tried to discharge myself, or seek care elsewhere, that I could be arrested for trying to kill my child. So of course, I stayed.”

A quick Google search shows local stories about this, including in Tennessee (Mississippi in the mountains), South Carolina, and Ohio. That was about 20 seconds of effort to find those.

It is just posturing for their resident idiots. They can demand anything they want but no state where abortion is legal is going to release those records even if Biden hadn't already stepped in. I doubt any attempts at federal laws trying to compel them would hold up, even with this court.

I wish I felt confident of that. Right-wing partisan hack SCOTUS has already proven itself to be out of control, believing that they are a more powerful and less accountable than any other supposedly co-equal branches. I also have no faith that if they approved this, and then California tried to use it to get out-of-state gun records, they'd find "reasoning" to strike that down.

Sure it's for their deluded voter base.  But the problem of the last 8 years is a failure of imagination in terms of what the authoritarian zealots will do.  As many historians will testify to, EVERY country that has fallen prey to extremist leaders believes it couldn't possibly happen to their country.

Remember when Pres Trump was floating the idea of superseding the 14th amendment birthright clause via executive order ?  That was very quickly shot down as soon as the 2A people realized the next President could supersede the 2nd via executive order. 

Tactic is very simple: start floating the idea about wanting gun purchase records.

Assuming republicans get the presidency and majorities in the senate (which would mean at least 60 republican senators) and the house, which would be required of any kind of abortion laws at the federal level, they won't be wasting their time on laws that force states to give up abortion information. It would be a much broader law. So, I'm certainly not saying hey, everything is cool. I'm just saying that in the fun house carnival ride of horrors we are currently on and the worries that accompany it, this one doesn't even merit consideration.

Again, I'm not as convinced when the hacks start spouting about or burying the concept of states' rights with incredible expedience. A new federal law is not required. All you need is the hacks finding a way to justify these state laws.

I've said before that the real meaning of "originalism" is the ability to find one original argument after another that defies precedence, thoroughness, or even a shred of common sense. (Yes, Mr. Roberts. I'm talking about your staggeringly unrealistic justification for allowing gerrymandering.)

Ohio decides today on an amendment to their state constitution regarding abortion rights. It’s going to be interesting to see that outcome.

The preliminary exit poll is trending towards a defeat for the forced-birth crowd (ABC News):

On Tuesday in Ohio, voters headed to the polls to decide whether to add abortion protections to the state constitution -- and preliminary exit poll results indicate broad support for abortion access.
Voters say 61-36% that abortion should be legal rather than illegal in all or most cases, according to the preliminary exit poll.
