CNN’s low energy purge of its news staff continues apace. John Harwood apparently got the news this morning that he was out. The clearest explanation of what’s happening is that the company is now under Republican management, specifically top shareholder and Trump donor John Malone. Many at CNN believe his understanding of and exposure to CNN is essentially what he sees of it through Fox News. They’re probably right. But there’s a deeper structural issue at play that is also important to keep in mind.

News networks like CNN are not designed, purchased or run to be niche operations or only to serve a portion of the public. Their potential market is supposed to be everyone. One might say this is impossible in an era of polarization. There’s some truth in that too. But that’s not exactly it either.

Both in terms of audience, potential advertisers and to a lesser degree access to newsmakers, CNN wants to be playing for a national audience. They obviously won’t get everybody in the country. But the economic model is to make a play for everyone.

The problem is that one party is organized around making that not possible. Fox and the GOP have basically defined CNN as the quintessence of the liberal “fake news” that makes life unfair for Trump, Republicans and all true Americans. CNN management is now trying to get out of that box by being more “centrist”, in Malone’s words. Each new firing is greeted by Republicans with rounds of chortling and as vindications of their claims of bias. They continue to give lists of other baddies who need to be cashiered to shed the “fake news” label. In other words, to get access to red America, CNN needs to agree to make Republicans themselves the arbiters of what is biased and what’s not. As the GOP becomes more authoritarian and anti-democratic in character, of necessity, coverage needs to say those things are more and more normal and okay – if at least, they want GOP approval as real news.

This has always been what most of the “media bias” conversation has been about, an elaborate processing or working the refs to ensure a mix of either toothless or defensive coverage of Republicans. But it’s particularly effective with national, mass-audience news brands. Because, again, they cannot afford to be cut off from upwards of half of the population. It’s the same we saw with the big tech companies. They’re under constant assault as liberal bias and unfairness to conservatives. But they can’t afford to be defined that way, both because their business is based on mass audience appeal and access to regulatory decision-making in Washington. So in cases like Facebook particularly you have a company constantly on the defensive for unfairness to conservatives which is simultaneously the biggest amplifier of conservative content and also constantly hiring Republicans and appealing to Republican leaders for love.

People are frequently critical of “corporate” media with the assumption that as corporations they are in their thrall of establishment, laissez-faire capitalist thinking. There may be some truth to that. But not a lot. This is the issue that it far more at issue. When big news organizations are own by big public corporations, all the incentives are to cater to Republicans to maximize potential audience. For all the bad things about personal or family ownership of news organizations, they are not as liable to this kind of pressure.

So the right wingers got both Politico (which was right of center) and CNN.  Back in the olden days there was concern that radio and tv airwaves would be taken over by foreign entities (remember commercial radio was developing in the '20's) and there once were a lot of rules about who could own, and how many in what markets.  I guess it never was the case with print media...and cable tv took off after the Telecommunications Act removed those '20's rules.

In this week’s podcast, Kate Riga and I talked about the on-going talent purge at CNN. We’ve discussed this before. CNN is under new Republican management and the top shareholder has announced his intention to make the network less “liberal” and more “centrist.” There are both ideological and business drivers, which I discussed last week. But I want to dig into the mechanics, which seem to be getting short shrift in the media discussion. Two rungs down the ladder from the top corporate boss is CNN boss Chris Licht. The game plan may come from on high (i.e., Trump donor billionaire John Malone) but Licht is the implementer. So far Brian Stelter and John Harwood have been axed and the rumor mill is now fixated on Brianna Keilar, a CNN host deemed “too liberal” or too critical of Trump for the new “centrist” CNN.

If you read the insider sheets like I do they are chock full of palace intrigue and rumors about Keilar’s imminent demise. Last week she went on a multi-day obsession about the presence of Marines in the background for Joe Biden’s big “MAGA Republicans” speech. This was a 48-hour hullabaloo. People can reasonably disagree over whether it was the appropriate optics. But she simply would not let it go. To me it seemed like a rather transparent effort to curry favor with Licht and show she could adapt to the new regime. Dylan Byers’ new column in Puck suggests that this was the takeaway within CNN as well.

The most striking thing about Licht’s firings to date is how they are choreographed for public consumption, particularly right-wing media consumption. They also seem designed to instill not only fear but uncertainty within CNN ranks which will lead on air talent to, for lack of a better word, discipline themselves without being told to directly.

Here’s what I mean.

When an organization like CNN wants to fire someone there are many ways to do it. One is to go to the person, explain that the organization wants to move in another direction and find a way for the employee to leave, at least outwardly, on their own terms. If there’s a contract outstanding, that can be negotiated. My sense with both Stelter and Harwood is that they got what amounted to a call out of the blue that they were out, more or less without warning and out immediately.

Stelter got the call a few days before what was to be the last episode of Reliable Sources after a 30 year run. The sign off and atmospherics with Harwood’s departure look similar. A call out of the blue: you’re out. In both cases the first public comments from the canned employee suggested as much.

This very public choreography is designed to generate mass schadenfreude on the right: the bête noires Fox has been harping on for years suddenly marched to the top of the pyramid and hurled to the ground. The abrupt and public approach is designed to be humiliating for the purpose of satiating the critics who long to see these folks hurt and who CNN wants to appeal to. It’s the whole “cry more” mentality. Public mockery of other people’s injury is a core leitmotif of Trumpism. Trumpism is dominance politics. To use Adam Serwer’s phrasing, the cruelty is the point. So the plan within CNN is not only to appeal to the Trump world but to do it, appropriately enough, in the language of Trumpism.

Licht appears to be driving a similar effect within CNN. Reports suggest Licht has made very little effort to explain to anyone at CNN just what his plan is. He wants CNN to be more “centrist” but how he plans to do that or precisely what that means aren’t clear. The few comments he’s made within CNN seem to amount to, “you’ll find out soon enough” or “we’ll see.” This is clearly a deliberate strategy to keep everyone guessing, to draw their own conclusions from the bodies flying past the office windows. It is again classic Trump: Keep people around you in a state of suspense and uncertainty because it gives you leverage over everyone. It’s a style of performative dominance.

As we’ve discussed in other contexts, the Trump aim behind “media bias” bullying is never to create specific editorial adjustments. It’s to demonstrate power, get the targets of the ire to confirm with their own actions the substance of the charge. There’s isn’t any personnel shake up or revised editorial line that would lead Donald Trump to say, “Well they were totally fake news but they’re looking pretty solid now.” The point is to stomp and chortle at the kowtowing and demand more. But perhaps Licht is on to something in realizing that what he can never deliver in terminations or right-leaning editorial interference he can edge up to with the language of performative Trumpism.

A source inside Project Veritas leaked the diary of Ashley Biden to a reporter at a conservative news outlet, according to Noel Fritsch, publisher of that outlet, National File, which first published the diary in October 2020, just ahead of the presidential election.

Project Veritas founder James O’Keefe had suspected an employee of his organization leaked the document, the New York Times previously reported, but Fritsch’s confirmation firmly establishes the links in a chain that began in a Florida drug rehabilitation center and led to a predawn raid of O’Keefe’s home last year.

The diary was left behind by Biden, the daughter of President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden, at a friend’s house during a rehab stint in Delray Beach, Florida. Aimee Harris, who subsequently lived in the house, discovered the diary, and with Robert Kurlander concocted a Coen brothers-level plan to sell it. Harris and Kurlander recently pleaded guilty to the charge of conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property, with prosecutors confirming the diary as authentic. Kurlander, according to prosecutors, is now cooperating with an ongoing investigation, and a key question being probed is whether Project Veritas understood the diary was legally obtained (as the organization has asserted) or whether it had any role in instructing Harris and Kurlander to steal further personal items of Biden’s in order to allow it to authenticate the diary. (The question could hinge on whether Biden abandoned the items, or was “storing” them at the friend’s home, and planned to return. Prosecutors allege the items were “stored,” not abandoned.) No charges have been filed against Project Veritas or its employees.

Fritsch said that O’Keefe, as far as he knew, did not authorize the leak. “It’s kind of ironic, we had to sort of ‘Veritas’ Veritas in order to get the thing broken and out into the news,” he told The Intercept. He said he wanted to speak with The Intercept in order to raise the alarm about the press freedom implications of investigating Project Veritas. During the Bush administration, he noted, journalists routinely denounced efforts to expose the sources of reporters. “We’re doing the same thing now, but we’re not hearing the phrase ‘chilling effect’ at all,” he said.

Right-wing undercover operative James O’Keefe has launched holiday-season layoffs at his nonprofit amid an FBI investigation and a series of other legal problems facing the group.

O’Keefe announced the Project Veritas layoffs in a Nov. 28 internal email reviewed by The Daily Beast. Roughly six people will be laid off, according to a person familiar with the plan.

It’s not clear how many people work for Project Veritas, but its tax returns from 2019—the most recent available—list 45 employees. At that size, laying off six people would represent more than 10 percent of the nonprofit’s total staff. A spokesman for Project Veritas didn’t provide more recent employment figures.

“As a part of our annual review process, we assess the performance of our organization and manage headcount to focus on attracting, maintaining and hiring the best talent available,” the group said in a statement to The Daily Beast. “We're always looking to hire the best people to carry out the gold standard of investigative journalism.”

Read on. The place sounds like an adolescent shitshow, sort of an uncharming version of Animal House.

It was convicted of wiretapping and fraudulent misrepresentation in September in connection with one of its "undercover investigations".  I don't think the fine was so high that it caused the layoffs, but I do wonder if O'Keefe is spending a lot of money on legal fees.

PhDs aren't the only ones who can sell out their supposed credentials.

Television news producer Kristen Hentschel was doing precisely what journalists should do on a searing hot day in Stuart, Fla., in July 2018: She confronted a politician with unwelcome questions.

Microphone and ABC News business card in hand, Hentschel rushed up to a candidate for the Florida House of Representatives before a debate, the candidate recalls, and asked him about 20 dead gopher tortoises that were reportedly found at a nearby construction site. Florida designates the species as threatened.

As far as the candidate, Toby Overdorf, knew, there were no dead tortoises.

And he would have known. Overdorf, an environmental engineer, served as the wildlife consultant to the construction project. Visibly flustered, Overdorf told Hentschel on camera that he didn't know what she was talking about.

"Residents say they aren't buying it," Hentschel declared in the news-style video she later posted online.

A city investigation found no dead tortoises. In fact, it found no evidence at all that any of the reptiles had ever been present.

That wasn't the only surprise. Though Hentschel has done freelance work for ABC, she was not there for the network.

At the time, a political consulting firm called Matrix LLC had paid Hentschel at least $7,000, the firm's internal ledgers show. And Matrix billed two major companies for Hentschel's work, labeling the payments "for Florida Crystals, FPL." (Florida Crystals is a huge sugar conglomerate. FPL is shorthand for the giant utility Florida Power & Light.)

Both companies could have benefited from her efforts to undermine Overdorf and his promises to resolve environmental issues in the district he was vying to represent. Florida Power & Light has pushed back against efforts to bring solar panels to the Sunshine State, while runoff from the sugar industry is a major source of water pollution in Florida.

Floodlight and NPR have not been able to independently verify whether Florida Power & Light or Florida Crystals knew about Hentschel's video. Florida Power & Light declined to comment for this story. Florida Crystals' lawyer Joseph Klock says the company "was not involved in any way, nor was anyone acting on its behalf, in any negative attacks in any form, directly or indirectly."

"It was an attack ad against my livelihood, my family," Overdorf says. "And it was something that potentially could last far beyond my time running for office."

Overdorf still won his election to the Florida House.

CNET reporter Jackson Ryan published an article last month describing how ChatGPT, an AI that can generate human-sounding text, would affect journalists and the news industry: “ChatGPT Is a Stunning AI, but Human Jobs Are Safe (for Now).”

“It definitely can’t do the job of a journalist,” Ryan wrote of ChatGPT. “To say so diminishes the act of journalism itself.”

The article said AI isn’t coming for journalists’ jobs just yet, but the very publication that ran Ryan’s article has been quietly publishing articles written by AI since November, according to Futurism and online marketer Gael Breton. The AI-written CNET articles bear the byline CNET Money Staff which is identified on the outlet’s website as “AI Content published under this author byline is generated using automation technology.”

CNET did not immediately respond to Gizmodo’s request for comment.
