Found a couple for today:
Those who look for seashells will find seashells; those who open them will find pearls.

Here's one that sounds contemporary:
Half of disbelief in Allah in the world is caused by people who make religion look ugly due to their bad conduct and ignorance

Al-Ghazali Religion always say "they're doing it wrong" as a way to excuse itself from the excesses people do in the name of the religion.

The season is over for the NY Yankees.
The saddest day of the year is the day baseball season ends.
Tommy Lasorda
The final stanza of "Casey at the Bat" is also appropriate:
Oh, somewhere in this favoured land the sun is shining bright,
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light;
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout,
But there is no joy in Mudville—mighty Casey has struck out.

The root of all evil is 'I', 'Me' , 'Mine'.
Saint Pio of Pietrelcina
Side note: when I was about 7 years old we lived in Italy. My dad's home town was near Pietrelcina. One day we went to Padre Pio's Mass. He said Mass about 0500. One of the things he did during the rest of the day, was hear confessions. I can honestly say I met and interacted with an "Official" Saint of the Catholic Church.
Sadly, none of the "saint vibes" managed to stick around. Whatever was left, went away in college.
