It's that bad up in the Sierra Nevada. Paused a bit on Saturday but will renew fury later Saturday night and Sunday. Even had snow thunder and lightening around Yosemite. Snow is measuring in the feet.

This memory from a couple of years ago popped in my feed:
As you know, finding an appropriate life philosophy to follow is important. As a younger man I would adhere to the old family motto: Festina ad Silva - "Make Haste to the Woods" an extremely important philosophy when you're in the Army and getting shot at.
At this late(r) stage of my life I have stumbled upon one that sums it up completely:
"Quaequae excusatio potatione pro". (I'll leave you the challenge to figure out what it means)

" Quaequae excusatio potatione pro". (I'll leave you the challenge to figure out what it means) I recognized the "excuse" part of the phrase and think quaequae means something like when or that. why is quae repeated? So I cheated and asked Google translate which tells me "Any excuse for drinking." So all I got was the excuse part right.

"Qualunque": whatever, whichever.

Went to the "big town" of Waterville ME for lunch with friends. Lunch was great. The club sandwich was so big I saved half for dinner. Coming back was when the fun started.
I took my eyes off the road for a second and almost had a lot of body damage. I know that was my doing. Recovered and got back on track. About a mile down the road, here comes a pickup on my side of the road (passing a semi on a double yellow). Not the nicest of feelings when seeing an imminent head on collision. Pulled onto the shoulder and stopped. I really have to get the dashcam working.
Enjoyed watching the Seton Hall/Georgia game to determine who is playing in the NIT championship game. Seton Hall won and is playing the championship game Thursday at 1900 on ESPN against Indiana State. Because of the importance of the game, I had a can of "Pantless Thunder Goose Double IPA". I'll have one Thursday during the game. GO PIRATES

And get that dash cam working. My daughter had one in her Honda Civic when some guy in a Cadillac blew through a red light turning left into her lane, actually ended up flipping her car to the roof. He of course said she had the red light. Dash cam made it very clear what actually happened.
And airbags and seatbelts are wonderful things.

I always appreciate George Takei on Twit X. He goes right to the heart of the hypocrisy in a pithy way.

In the unusual weather category... this was not a surprise storm, as the Highway Patrol put it, don't show up here in your shorts and flip flops with no chains for your tires!

Finally got to watch the video of the controlled explosions on the Key Bridge in Baltimore. Most of the videos cover the actual explosion and the structure falling in the river.
As someone who did demolitions, this was a very skillful, large and delicate job. I can assure you the Corps of Engineers, was taking a lot of notes and videos of the preparation, placement of the charges and the final result. The hard part of this was figuring out where to put the charges so the structure would fall where you wanted. If you place the charges correctly, the cuts look like they were made by a torch. I may add the individual charges are not that big, perhaps 5 or 10 lbs at the most. Probably why they let the crew stay on board.
Side note for the curious: What has lightning to do with demolitions ? No, its not fear of a strike on the explosives. In certain atmospheric conditions, like an electrical storm, the electric blasting caps could be set off by the static electricity in the atmosphere. Therefore, you can't have an explosive charge get set off by a nearby lightning strike. The charges are pre set, but the blasting caps are nowhere near the explosives and are "neutralized" so they won't go off.

Every once in a while, I get serious. This is one of those occasions.
A few hours from now, starts the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. The heroes that were there and who are still with us, should always know the tremendous gratitude we have for their valor and courage. In serious times like this, we turn to Shakespeare's Henry V:
This day is called the feast of Crispian:
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when the day is named,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say ‘To-morrow is Saint Crispian:’
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars.
And say ‘These wounds I had on Crispin’s day.’
Old men forget: yet all shall be forgot,
But he’ll remember with advantages
What feats he did that day:
.....
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day.
