BREAKING: 36 MAGA Republican senators just voted NO on the Respect for Marriage Act. You read that right. In 2022, the majority of the Republican Party is AGAINST protecting the right to marriage for LGBTQ and interracial couples.

Terry Newsome, 62, of Darien, Illinois, leads Illinois Parents Involved in Education. The group opposes public school policies such as accommodations for trans students, LGBTQ-inclusive education and classroom discussion of the U.S. legacy of systemic racism. Newsome has a history of attempting to shut down community events associated with LGBTQ inclusion and smearing other parents in his community who challenge his views. He participates in anti-LGBTQ protests organized by the hate group the Proud Boys, and he is seeking to organize a local chapter of the anti-LGBTQ hate group MassResistance.

On social media, Newsome posts racist memes and claims he was present at the U.S. Capitol “Stop the Steal” rally on Jan. 6, 2021. Despite connections to extremist groups and a history of using bigoted rhetoric about Black people and LGBTQ people, Newsome won a seat as a Republican precinct committeeperson. He has a growing presence in local media, which portrays him as the prototypical voice of angry conservative parents, often without disclosing his organized far-right activity.

While Hatewatch was in the process of reporting this story, Newsome sent messages to this reporter's personal email address and LinkedIn page, inquiring about FOIA requests for his email correspondence with public officials. He volunteered information about his family's political affiliations and offered to contribute to any "research." When Hatewatch contacted Newsome with a request for comment on the facts detailed in this reporting, he declined. In these exchanges, Newsome copied David Smith, the executive director of Illinois Family Institute, an anti-LGBTQ hate group. Newsome wrote:

Furthermore, I was informed that you are a self proclaimed far left activist intent on using media and communications to "disrupt privilege" for the sole purpose of social justice. The House passed the marriage equality bill. Next stop, Biden's desk!

The House voted to pass legislation on Thursday to protect same-sex and interracial marriage, the last step before the measure goes to President Joe Biden for his signature and becomes law.

The House vote was 258 to 169 with 39 Republicans joining the Democrats voting in favor. Loud applause broke out in the chamber when the vote was gaveled to a close.

While the bill would not set a national requirement that all states must legalize same-sex marriage, it would require individual states to recognize another state’s legal marriage.

The push for a vote on federal legislation protecting same-sex marriage rapidly gained momentum after the Supreme Court in June overturned its landmark Roe v. Wade decision.

The bill, called the Respect for Marriage Act, passed the Senate with a vote of 61 to 36 last week. The bill was supported by all members of the Senate Democratic caucus and 12 Republicans.

In the event the Supreme Court might overturn its 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges decision that legalized same-sex marriage, a state could still pass a law to ban same-sex marriage, but that state would also be required to recognize a same-sex marriage from another state.

This is certainly an important bill but it is clearly incomplete. If right-wing partisan hack SCOTUS decided to trash Obergefell, something Clarence Thomas is clearly touching himself over the possibility of doing, the majority of states would automatically make same sex marriage illegal by constitution or statute. It would only be legal in 19 states on Day 1 after such a horrible ruling.

This thread is about absurd moral panics, especially from the right-wing. I put it here because of the latter part that shows how the right, especially the Christianist right, is doing it again with LGBTQ people. This is a long-term refrain from them. Allowing gay sex? It will destroy America! Allowing marriage equality? It will destroy America! Not being able to call your co-worker a faggot to their face? It will destroy America! In fact they are trying to use the latest moral panic to, you guessed it, destroy America.

But, the worst possible outcome is when an authoritarian government comes to (permanent) power on the basis of some sort of moral panic. This one of the times when conditions are ripe for genocide. 13/n

The "centrist" media, and I'm looking at you NYT and The Atlantic, LOVES concern trolling for dollars on trans stuff by presenting slanted or misleading information on trans people. For instance, the NYT piece compared cis men and trans women bone density... 16/n

The right-wingers are showing up armed at protests of drag shows. This is insane and now liberals are started to do the same to keep them in check, probably because they don't trust the MAGAt heavy police. Right now the balance of power has held but I'm afraid that one day it won't.

A showdown between protesters of an all-ages Christmas drag show at the Aztec Theatre and members of the pro-LGBTQ community was largely peaceful Tuesday night, as both groups mostly stuck to their side of St. Mary’s Street in downtown San Antonio

The crowd of LGBTQ community members and their allies grew to more than 150 people as the evening progressed, playing music, dancing and chanting to drown out those who massed across the street to protest the show about to go on inside.

Police on the scene kept the entrance of the theater clear, so patrons could freely enter the venue.

A handful of armed people, dressed in all black with their faces mostly covered, stood on the pro-LGBTQ community side of St. Mary’s Street, rainbow scarves tied to their tactical gear. Most didn’t respond to a reporter, but one confirmed that members of the John Brown Gun Club, a leftist gun rights group, were in attendance.

About 40 protesters, some with the group This is Texas Freedom Force, which the FBI labeled “an extremist militia group” after the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, stood across St. Mary’s from the theater. Fewer than five appeared to be armed. They have said they came to protest the all-ages drag show because it is inappropriate for children.

THIS is a great way to protest.

Would these anti drag show folks protest a clown show?  Those clowns are scary, don't look like what they really are...all that white face paint obscures their true nature.  And what if they are pedophile Jokers of Batman style clowns?

The U.S. Education Department’s civil rights enforcement arm has launched an investigation into a North Texas school district whose superintendent was secretly recorded ordering librarians to remove LGBTQ-themed library books.

Education and legal experts say the federal probe of the Granbury Independent School District — which stemmed from a complaint by the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas and reporting by NBC News, ProPublica and The Texas Tribune — appears to be the first such investigation explicitly tied to the nationwide movement to ban school library books dealing with sexuality and gender.

The Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights notified Granbury school officials on Dec. 6 that it had opened the investigation following a July complaint by the ACLU, which accused the district of violating a federal law that prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender. The ACLU complaint was based largely on an investigation published in March by NBC News, ProPublica and the Tribune that revealed that Granbury’s superintendent, Jeremy Glenn, instructed librarians to remove books dealing with sexual orientation and people who are transgender.

“I acknowledge that there are men that think they’re women and there are women that think they’re men,” Glenn told librarians in January, according to a leaked recording of the meeting obtained, verified and published exclusively by the news outlets. “I don’t have any issues with what people want to believe, but there’s no place for it in our libraries.”

Later in the meeting, Glenn clarified that he was specifically focused on removing books geared toward queer students: “It’s the transgender, LGBTQ and the sex — sexuality — in books,” he said, according to the recording.

The comments, combined with the district’s subsequent decision to remove dozens of library books pending a review, fostered a “pervasively hostile” environment for LGBTQ students, the ACLU wrote in its complaint. Chloe Kempf, an ACLU attorney, said the Education Department’s decision to open the investigation into Granbury ISD signals that the agency is concerned about what she described as “a wave” of anti-LGBTQ policies and book removals nationally.

“In this case it was made very clear, because the superintendent kind of said the quiet part out loud,” Kempf said in an interview. “It’s pretty clear that that kind of motivation is animating a lot of these policies nationwide.”

An Education Department spokesperson confirmed the investigation and said it was related to Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits schools from discriminating on the basis of sex, gender and sexual orientation. The Office for Civil Rights doesn’t comment on pending investigations, the spokesperson said.

If the investigation confirms violations of students’ rights in Granbury schools, the agency can require the district to make policy changes and submit to federal monitoring.

A school board in Bucks County, PA, which adjoins Philadelphia County, passed a lighter version of "Don't Say Gay" or, really, just about anything else political which means nothing that makes right-wing snowflake parents butthurt. Welcome to right-wing political correctness, not something in some universities here and there but driven through government mandates.

Teachers from across Central Bucks School District gathered outside of two schools along Holicong Road in Buckingham on Tuesday protesting a recently approved policy restricting political and social policy discussions in classrooms.

The demonstration at Central Bucks High School East and Holicong Middle School came as administrators were scheduled to meet with staff about Policy 321, a controversial policy supporters say creates a politically neutral learning environment but one that teachers and students say is an attempt to silence discussions about LGBTQ issues.

Keith Willard, a Holicong Middle School teacher, led a crowd of teachers and students out of the middle school at around 3 p.m. Tuesday, joining a group of about 20 other teachers already gathered near Holicong Road. He said the policy was a step backward and could hurt efforts to support students, including those in the LGBTQ community.

“This policy is a roadblock to that progress. It attempts to make LGBTQ support invisible," he said. "Make no mistake, this is a policy borne out of bigotry and discrimination and one only needs to look at the previous revisions to see symbols of pride targeted.”

The North Dakota House of Representatives has introduced a bill that would prohibit expanded use of pronouns outside of the gender that the person was born.

House Bill 2199 restricts the definition of gender to the person's natural gender at birth and then requires that all pronoun use be reflective of that same gender. Any violation by an institution that receives state funding, including public schools, would be subject to a $1,500 fine.

If gender is challenged, the bill puts the responsibility on the individual to prove their gender.

“Say, they’re a boy, but they come to school and say they’re a girl. As far as that school is concerned in this bill, that person is still a boy. If it becomes contested, the burden will be on the girl, the so-called girl, or the boy, to prove that he is a girl,” said North Dakota State Senator David Clemens while speaking in favor of the bill.

The bill's sponsor was the only testimony given in support of the bill, as nearly 100 separate forms of testimony was provided against the bill. Even the state's Senate Judiciary Committee voted to not pass the proposed bill.

On a side note, the bill's sponsor looks like the love child of Ned Beatty and Captain Kangaroo. And FFS, somebody just give him 15 bucks and drag his ass to a Super Cuts.

Creepy new details emerge about drag-hating senator whose GOP colleagues mysteriously turned on her last week

New details have emerged about Julie Frye-Mueller, the anti-LGBTQ, ultra-conservative, rank-in-file Republican state senator from South Dakota who was inexplicably stripped of her legislative power last week.

“None of you have talked to me. I don’t know what was said against me,” Julie Frye-Mueller told her GOP colleagues. “I know there’s an agenda behind this. This is going somewhere.”

As it turns out, Frye-Mueller allegedly offered unsolicited advice to a woman about breastfeeding her baby son that went beyond–waaaaay beyond–what most people would consider appropriate workplace conversation, especially when that workplace is the South Dakota Senate.

In a statement released yesterday, the woman alleged: “I was told by Senator Frye-Mueller that my husband could ‘suck on my breasts’ to get milk to come in. She indicated ‘a good time for that is at night.’”

But it doesn’t stop there. Apparently, Frye-Mueller went on to offer a graphic demonstration on how to do it.

“She proceeded to provide hand gestures to her chest area and motion to her husband to see if he agreed,” the woman claimed. “He smiled and nodded.”

All of these ultra-antis have massive psychological issues. Across the board they are seriously f***ed up.
