Never one to pass up a cheap, one bottle high, I present Flying Dog Brewing's "Double Dog 18" Triple IPA with an ABV of 18.2% www.flyingdog.com/beers/double-dog-18/For those that are interested, there is a "locator" feature on the site.

As I get old I move further away from triples, strong ales, barleywines, and imperials. On the complete opposite end it's incredible to see (and taste) what they're doing today on the "light" end. I've had sub-5% IPAs and pilsners that I would never have thought were low alcohol without reading the ABV.

After a day of one little task after another I can go with something light but flavorful. I'm downing a "Days Like This" Kölsch from Birds Fly South in SC. The flavor is very nice, not at all watery, and not much biscuit (a downer for me). At only 4.2% ABV this would be a perfect picnic beer. Wish I could get it by the case for the next party.

I'll have to remember this next time I'm in Jax (unless that "next time" is for a baseball game on a school night...)! If I get a chance to sample the wares, I will duly report back to the membership.

Once again, our Son in Law is getting national recognition for his beer. This time around, its smoked beer made from a 1,000 year old Norwegian recipe. Seems to be a growing trend in the beer universe. I have to say its a different taste and not unpleasant. At first sip, you get strong hints of barbequed beef. The Forbes article and photos are at the link. I'm allowed two or three more hits so if anyone has a go around to the article feel free to post it. Smoked Beer Lights Up The Palates Of Some ConsumersAs smoked beer grows in popularity at American craft breweries, few brewers may have the perspective of Colorado brewer Jan Chodkowski. He traveled to Norway five years ago with Colorado Malting Company owner Josh Cody to learn how to make smoked beer and recently enjoyed the fruits of his journey. “We were in Norway for three or four days and visited a såinnhaus where stjørdalsøl malt is made and the beer is brewed,” says Chodkowski, the head brewer of Our Mutual Friend Brewing Company in Denver. “We learned how they smoked and kilned the malt at the same time which gives the beer its truly unique and intense flavor. We also learned that the beer is traditionally brewed just for Christmas Eve as a way to celebrate and relax during the hard northern winters.” www.forbes.com/sites/garystoller/2022/04/19/smoked-beer-lights-up-the-palates-of-some-consumers/?sh=66563fe1bf39

Last weekend, (Sep 1-5) we were in the Stowe Vermont area for a delayed (COVID) wedding reception. The reception was great. A major benefit was we were near Alchemist Brewing. This may not mean much but they make "Heddy Topper" a major cult beer for the hipster lifestyle.
For many years, distribution of Heddy Topper was limited to stores in about a 40 mile radius of the brewery. The pandemic changed all that. Heddy Topper is now available near our house. I also heard its available in Denver CO. The problem is getting it while its "fresh".
Since we were at the brewery, I bought four 4 packs. Three I will distribute here in Maine, the last four pack is for me as a carrying charge. For those who are curious, I do not drink if I'm alone so my pleasure will have to wait until I get home October 1.

A thought on the importance of beer as viewed by Frank Zappa
You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline. It helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer.

Today marks the signing by Pres Roosevelt of legislation that ended prohibition.
As such, the anniversary is commemorated by the observance of “National Beer Day” on April 7.
On a semi related and prurient note, it’s also National Beaver Day.

For the record, I have no problem with people getting a holiday off. Just wish they posted it. Fortunately it was very close to I95. So no big deal.
