The Trump administration accidentally slapped sanctions on an Italian restaurant and a graphic design studio before the former president left office, The Guardian reported.

On former President Donald Trump's last day of office, he ordered that sanctions be imposed on a network of Venezuelan oil firms and individuals associated with the state oil company — Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA).

This was part of a long-term economic embargo on Venezuela, intended to put an end to President Nicolas Maduro's regime.

However, an unfortunate mistake meant that two Italian business owners, who shared the same name as a man involved in the Venezuelan oil trade, had their businesses targeted in the crackdown.

Alessandro Bazzoni, the owner of a pizzeria in the Italian city of Verona, discovered that his business was placed on a US trade blacklist after visiting his local bank, The Guardian reported.

"When I heard that my current accounts had been blocked, I thought it was a joke," Bazzoni told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. "These are already difficult times for us restaurant owners, the last thing I needed was to have my accounts blocked."

Bazzoni told the newspaper that he has not received an apology. He said, however, that he is grateful for his name being removed from the sanctions list. "I thank the new American government for the efficiency with which it intervened," Bazzoni told Corriere della Sera.

As Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) scolds big business for criticizing GOP voter suppression bills, Republicans are finding that corporate America is no longer as interested in hiring members of their party.

The topic was explored in a new report by The Washington Post titled, "Corporate America isn't welcoming former Trump Cabinet officials with open arms, headhunters say."

The newspaper reported on the situation facing McConnell's own wife.

"Before she joined the Trump administration as transportation secretary, Elaine Chao earned millions of dollars over the past decade by serving on the boards of big public companies such as Dole Foods, Protective Life and Wells Fargo, according to corporate filings," The Post reported. "But now Chao is encountering a fraught reentry into the private sector. Headhunters who have sought similarly prominent work for Chao have found little interest, according to two headhunters she's consulted personally. The headhunters, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the discussions, said top executives wary of backlash from associating with former Trump officials are boiling down Chao's four-decade Washington résumé to its most recent entry: long-standing ally of Donald Trump, despite her resignation the day after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol."

One of the headhunters said the feedback heard was, "It's too soon."

Chao declined to comment, but "a person close to her" says she's already accepted positions that are yet to be finalized.

The trend seems to also be impacting other former members of Trump's Cabinet.

The campaign arm of House Republicans is using an aggressive tactic to push online donors toward committing to monthly contributions, telling them that opting out of having the same amount automatically charged to their credit card or withdrawn from their bank each month is an act of disloyalty toward former President Donald Trump.

Another lesson is probably "hide the box better".  In the olden days there would be a bill introduced that sets standards for how online solicitations are formatted so little surprises like this wouldn't happen anymore.  That won't happen anytime in the next 4 years.

From a gleeful “yippee!!!” to a pained reminder that his reputation is on the line, a Trump administration official’s failures and successes to influence the CDC’s COVID-19 reporting is captured in a new document dump from the House Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis.

Paul Alexander, formerly a top deputy to Health and Human Services assistant secretary for public affairs Michael Caputo, the longtime Trump hype man and HHS official, is the star of the tranche of emails.

The communications show his fixation on the CDC’s COVID-19 reports, often complaining that they were purposely written to cast the administration in a negative light.

“Very misleading by CDC and shame on them,” he wrote in an August 2020 email to Caputo, former CDC Director Robert Redfield and a handful of other officials about a report on COVID-19 spread at a Georgia summer camp. “Their aim is clear. This hurts any President or administration.”

No surprise he was sticking his dumb, uninformed, political ass in where he had no authority to do so.

He also repeatedly demanded complete oversight of the CDC’s COVID-19 reports before publication, griping that he was only getting to see summaries. Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-GA), chairman of the House subcommittee, noted in an accompanying release that former HHS Secretary Alex Azar had testified last fall that Alexander had no “authority over determining the final publication of” the CDC reports.

Australia’s ex-prime minister, Malcolm Turnbull, has long accused Rupert Murdoch of bringing his prime ministership down—and, at a parliamentary hearing Monday, it was very clear that he’s out for revenge.

Turnbull, a former journalist who has known Murdoch for more than four decades, delivered a furious takedown of one of his country’s most notorious sons during Monday’s evidence session. He accused Murdoch of doing more to divide America than Vladimir Putin and blamed his media empire for causing the presidency of Donald Trump as well as the Capitol riot that marked the disgraceful climax of his time in power.

“What does Vladimir Putin want to do with his operations in America? He wants to divide America and turn Americans against each other,” said the ex-PM, who first met Murdoch in 1974. “That is exactly what Murdoch has done: Divided Americans against each other and so undermined their faith in political institutions that a mob of thousands of people, many of them armed, stormed the Capitol.”

The former PM, who led Australia’s center-right party from 2015 to 2018, was invited to give evidence to the inquiry that was launched after a petition calling for a probe into Murdoch’s media empire was signed by half a million Australians.

Turnbull is the second former prime minister to rip into Murdoch in front of the inquiry. Kevin Rudd, who led Australia’s center-left party, said, “Everyone’s frightened of Murdoch.”

Turnbull said that, although Murdoch has had far too much influence in the political processes of his own country, he was particularly sickened to see what the media mogul achieved with Trump in America. He went as far as to suggest that Trump’s relationship with Fox News was similar to the unwaveringly loyal state media in authoritarian countries.

“I’ve hung around billionaire media proprietors for a long time. I have never seen a politician as deferential to a media proprietor as Trump was to Murdoch, ever, in any country,” said the former leader. “Murdoch’s media in the U.S. had a symbiotic relationship with Trump.”

One of the most blistering complaints that Turnbull leveled at Murdoch and his journalists is that they essentially carry out propaganda work for terrorists by stoking hate for minorities. The former prime minister said that, while he was in power, he did everything he could to try and overcome that division but that his efforts were often drowned out.

Is he telling the Reps to go ahead and put term limits on justices and/or allow the Dems to change the court somehow...as in packing? Does his desire for revenge go that far?

Through his attorneys Trump makes a rather unique legal argument and finally admits he really isn't president.

Donald Trump continues to resist efforts by investigators to obtain his tax returns.

"Donald Trump said a New York law enabling Congress to ask for his state tax returns no longer applies because he isn't president. The law, known as the Trust Act, allows the state to share the president's tax information with a congressional committee that asks for it. Trump sued the House and Ways and Means Committee to block it from requesting information," Bloomberg News reported Monday.

Trump's lawyers told U.S. District Judge Carl J. Nichols the law "does not apply to former presidents."

The filing is however an admission that he is not president anymore.

Now that we have a real government rather than a banana Republican one we are starting to get more and more information on the incompetence, corruption, and downright stupidity of the Trump administration. In new information that should not shock anyone on TRS it turns out that Trump's DHS was super cozy with the We Build the Wall scam that stole tens of millions of donation dollars and for which Trump pardoned Steve Bannon. Here's the opening but there are a lot of details.

At first, when We Build The Wall hosted a flashy event on May 30, 2019 near the U.S.-Mexican border, the Department of Homeland Security had no interest in participating.

El Paso’s chief patrol agent Aaron Hull emailed a superior to flag the invitation he had received from Kris Kobach, the group’s general counsel, while clarifying that “We were not involved in any way in the effort.”

“We are declining this invitation,” Hull wrote. “However, I suspect that they will say that we helped/supported/whatever their effort in their press conference today.”

It would take only three months for the DHS to change its tune on the pro-Trump group, which had launched in 2018 to construct sections of border wall on private land with crowdsourced funding. That August, Mark Morgan, then the acting commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, hosted Kobach and two other emissaries from the group for a meeting in Washington with several other top CBP officials.

Morgan, according to an internal readout of the August 27, 2019 meeting, thanked We Build The Wall for the “positive interaction they have had with CBP.” He elaborated on the “enhanced safety” the group’s wall-building project provided CBP agents.

When the group asked about the possibility of constructing more border fence and then donating it to CBP, its deputy commissioner, Robert Perez, “expressed that CBP is interested in exploring all available options if an offer were made,” according to the summary.

Kobach and his associates were sent on their way with several pages of instructions on how to submit such a “donation” proposal and with a promise that CBP would be back in touch in a few weeks, according to the internal account of the meeting.

The readout was among hundreds of pages of documents TPM obtained Monday through a Freedom of Information Act request laying out the extent to which, in 2019 and early 2020, Trump’s DHS welcomed We Build The Wall’s offer to privately finance construction of a border wall. Trump himself was struggling to fund his own oft-promised expanded border wall through government appropriations, and there was no hope that, as Trump claimed on the 2016 campaign trail, Mexico would pay for it.

The gambit, despite DHS’ encouragement, did not get very far, and came crashing to a halt last August when several people involved with We Build The Wall — including former Trump advisor Steve Bannon — were charged by a federal grand jury for allegedly defrauded the group’s donors. (Kobach himself was not among those indicted and has not been accused of any illegal activity.)

When the charging documents were unsealed, DHS tried to distance itself from the effort, with then acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf claiming that he never endorsed their gambit.

But at least through fall of 2019 and into that winter, top officials at the CBP were in regular contact with Kobach as they walked him through the process of offering the construction of a section of border wall as a donation to DHS. Once that donation was formally proposed in Feb. 2020, at least some agency officials had given the proposal their informal approval.

Much of this back-and-forth occurred while the federal investigation into We Build The Wall’s fundraising tactics was well underway — and even after some involved in the group were allegedly told that their conduct was being probed by federal investigators.

The DHS IG refused to investigate Trump and Barr's military style assault on the peaceful protesters in D.C. so Trump could stand in front of a church and hold a bible upside down. He also spiked an investigation into the Secret Service's failures to follow COVID protocols.

The Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general refused recommendations by career staffers to probe the agency’s handling of protests at Lafayette Square and the spread of the coronavirus in its ranks, according to a Washington Post report on Tuesday.

Citing internal documents and two people familiar with his decision, the Post reported that Joseph Cuffari, the DHS’ inspector general, denied his staff’s recommendation to investigate the role the Secret Service played in the aggressive clearing of largely peaceful protesters from Lafayette Square last June for Trump’s infamous photo-op.

Cuffari’s investigators submitted a draft plan on June 10 to investigate whether the Secret Service violated its use-of-force policies in the June 1 clearing of Lafayette Square that involved the shooting of rubber bullets and spraying of chemical irritants at hundreds of protesters. At a June 18 meeting to discuss potential new investigations, Cuffari said the DHS inspector general determined that it would not investigate the Secret Service’s handling of the protests or clearing of the square. Cuffari reportedly suggested that Secret Service Director Jim Murray could look into the episode.

The forcible clearing of protesters at Lafayette Square last year culminated in then-President Trump and several other administration officials posing for a surprise photo-op in front of St. John’s Episcopal Church. It was during this photo shoot that Trump formalized his “law and order” approach to racial injustice and police brutality protesters, as people around the nation gathered to protest the police killing of George Floyd. At the time, Trump announced that he “strongly recommended” every governor deploy the National Guard to “dominate the streets,” just as federal police used tear gas and flash bangs to disperse an otherwise peaceful crowd gathered outside the White House.

Additionally, Cuffari reportedly tried to limit an investigation into the extent of the Secret Service’s failure to comply with federal protocols that were implemented to detect and reduce the spread of COVID-19 within its workforce, according to records obtained by the Post. He ultimately scrapped the probe.

The infamous Foxconn - Trump - Walker deal is officially dead. The Democratic governor of Wisconsin has renegotiated a real deal that is similar to other deals the state has cut. Trump and Walker were proven to be complete and total chumps, or perhaps rank political opportunists ... or a bit of both.

The state of Wisconsin has negotiated a dramatically scaled-back deal with Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn. The move, announced Tuesday by Democratic Gov. Tony Evers, is a repudiation of a deal negotiated four years earlier by Evers' Republican predecessor Scott Walker.

The original deal envisioned Foxconn spending as much as $10 billion to manufacture a state-of-the-art factory for manufacturing large liquid-crystal display panels. The deal was announced in 2017, and then-President Donald Trump traveled to Wisconsin for the 2018 groundbreaking, describing the new factory as "the eighth wonder of the world." Foxconn was supposed to get $2.85 billion in state and local incentives under that original deal.

The deal may have been savvy politics for Foxconn in 2017. The company uses factories in other countries to assemble consumer electronics products for Apple and other American companies—products that are often then sent back to the United States for sale. So Trump's protectionist inclinations seemed like a serious threat. Announcing plans to create of thousands of jobs in a key battleground state gave Trump something to boast about, and that may have helped Foxconn curry favor with the new administration.

But before long, it became clear that Foxconn wasn't going to hold up its end of the bargain. The company was supposed to build a factory based on the LCD panel industry's new Generation 10.5 standard, which uses enormous sheets of "mother glass" that are roughly 10 feet (3 meters) square. Each glass sheet is typically cut into several displays for use in large televisions. Making panels that large requires a large factory—the original deal envisioned Foxconn hiring as many as 13,000 workers in Wisconsin by 2032.

The new deal acknowledges that Foxconn's presence in Wisconsin will be much smaller. The agreement asks Foxconn to spend only $672 million on a factory that will employ only 1,454 people by 2025. And the state will only offer Foxconn $80 million in incentives—a thirtyfold reduction from the original incentive package.

Evers described the new package as "a better deal for our state." According to Reuters, Evers also "stressed that the incentives were in line with those available to any company."

The Trump administration effectively muffled scientific staffers at the Environmental Protection Agency when it rewrote automobile pollution rules, the agency’s watchdog said.

When drafting fuel economy and greenhouse gas pollution rules for cars and light trucks, former EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt decided to cede various EPA duties to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration in what is typically a collaborative process, the independent inspector general said in a report released yesterday. Though Pruitt signed the final report for the EPA, he allowed NHTSA staff to write a significant portion of the rules and to complete all modeling and analysis for both agencies.

The NHTSA’s modeling efforts did not use the EPA’s established tools that had been created to evaluate greenhouse gas emissions standards. Instead, the NHTSA hacked its own Corporate Average Fuel Economy models and sent EPA experts the results late in the process. “Technical personnel were unable to fully collaborate on rule development,” the report said.

The EPA and the NHTSA have collaborated on fuel economy and emissions standards since 2010 in an effort to streamline and harmonize regulations for automakers. In rules written during the Obama administration, the EPA and NHTSA called for 5 percent annual increases in fuel economy. After Trump was elected, though, automakers wrote to his transition team to request that the annual increases be frozen. The Trump administration obliged, reviewing the rule and issuing a new one calling for 1.5 percent increases in fuel economy. The reason for the reduction, the Trump administration said, was that it would help keep auto prices lower, allowing consumers to buy newer, safer vehicles. Not everyone was convinced by that logic.

Taiwan electronics manufacturer Foxconn is drastically scaling back a planned $10 billion factory in Wisconsin, confirming its retreat from a project that former U.S. President Donald Trump once called “the eighth wonder of the world.”

Under a deal with the state of Wisconsin announced on Tuesday, Foxconn will reduce its planned investment to $672 million from $10 billion and cut the number of new jobs to 1,454 from 13,000.

The terms are quite different this time around. 

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers said the new agreement will save Wisconsin taxpayers “a total of $2.77 billion compared to the previous contract, maintain accountability measures requiring job creation to receive incentives, and protect hundreds of millions of dollars in local and state infrastructure investments made in support of the project.”

Evers said under the deal negotiated between the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation and Foxconn, the Taiwan company is eligible to receive up to $80 million in performance-based tax credits over six years if it meets employment and capital investment targets. He stressed that the incentives were in line with those available to any company.

The state will reduce the tax credits authorized for the project to $80 million from $2.85 billion.

The original Wisconsin package also included local tax incentives and road and highway investments by state and local governments, which brought total taxpayer-funded subsidies to more than $4 billion.

Compare that goat intercourse with the right way to do it.  This plant is about 10 miles from my house.  We have seen the Albany area become a leader in microprocessors and nanoscience.  At one point the project was the second largest construction project in the world.

Another day, another revelation of Trumpian evil and corruption. And uber-"Christian" Ben Carson was right in the middle of it.

The Trump administration lined up unprecedented bureaucratic obstacles that delayed approximately $20 billion in hurricane relief for Puerto Rico, according to an inspector general report that could be released publicly as soon as Thursday.

In a 46-page document first reported by the Washington Post early Thursday, the inspector general said it uncovered procedural hurdles created by the White House budget office that stalled recovery aid despite efforts by Trump administration officials to obstruct its investigation into the delay by the request of Congress in 2019.

Hurricanes Irma and Maria had left Puerto Rico residents without power and clean water for months after ravaging the U.S. territory in 2017.

According to the Post, the report revealed that OMB added an extra approval step that demanded the Housing and Urban Developments department’s notice of grant funds undergo an interagency review process which prevented HUD from publishing its draft notice of funding by its target date.

The inspector general said the OMB had not previously demanded such a review process for a notice allocating disaster relief funds, according to the Post.

Amid repeated attempts to block aid to Puerto Rico at the time, President Donald Trump had reportedly also told at least two officials that he did not want a single dollar going to Puerto Rico but wanted more funding instead to be designated to Florida and Texas.

According to the report, HUD Deputy Secretary Brian Montgomery likened the White House’s actions to holding disaster-relief funds “hostage” in communications with then-acting OMB director Russell Vought, the Post said.

In efforts to produce the report, watchdogs were also met by obstruction efforts in terms of their limited access to officials and HUD information.

Former Housing and Urban Development secretary Ben Carson and another former HUD official apparently refused to be interviewed during the investigation, the Post said.

The refusals for cooperation in the probe, are just the latest example of how Trump officials thwarted oversight investigations by federal watchdogs who are mandated by Congress to monitor agencies for waste, fraud and misconduct.

To be fair Carson is more than a few fries short of a Happy Meal so he likely didn't have a clue what was going on. He seems to be some sort of savant that who excelled at surgery but is generally dumb as a brick with few basic reasoning skills.

Judge Emmet Sullivan cites Donald Trump's 'continued' election lies as reason not to release rioter


"[T]he Court concludes that clear and convincing evidence supports a finding that no condition or combination of conditions will reasonably assure the safety of the community," Sullivan explains in the opinion. "Accordingly, the Court orders that Mr. Whitton be detained pending trial."

Sullivan goes on to cite recent statements made by Trump to bolster his point.

"Former President Donald J. Trump continues to make forceful public comments about the 'stolen election,' chastising individuals who did not reject the supposedly illegitimate results that put the current administration in place," the opinion states, noting that Trump had issued an April 4 statement about a "rigged" presidential election.  (See below)
