You can smell the desperation to get the conversation to shift from the Jan. 6 Republican Insurrection, "legitimate political discourse", and the Big Lie. In a bizarre attention-grabbing maneuver, Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) claimed this morning that Capitol Hill police took unauthorized photos of his office last fall.

He made the surprising claim on Twitter, saying that on Nov. 22, 2021, “special agents dressed like construction workers” questioned one of his staff members about photographs that they had supposedly taken two days before.

According to Nehls, on Nov. 20 — days before the fateful, construction-garbed encounter with Nehls’ staff — one or more Capitol Police officers infiltrated the Texas representative’s office and took pictures of what the congressman described as “confidential legislative products.”

It’s a weird set of claims, and one that comes as Nehls and other Republicans seek to shift blame for the Jan. 6 insurrection away from Trump and the rioters and onto what they describe as inept Capitol Police leadership. Nehls sought to cast the Thanksgiving-week encounter as a form of political persecution.

Fellow travelers on the right immediately pounced on the allegation: Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) suggested on Tuesday that the DOJ was intercepting his mail. The president of the right-wing advocacy group Judicial Watch, meanwhile, accused Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) of creating a “secret police” force to hunt down freethinkers like Nehls and Gohmert.

Hours after Nehls made his accusation, Capitol Police Chief J. Thomas Manger issued a statement that didn’t line up with Nehls’ account at all.

Turns out the idiot or some idiot on his staff inappropriately left his door open. So why the hubbub? Maybe this.

A copy of a Capitol Police report from the incident obtained by TPM describes elements of the encounter. It does not mention any photographs.

On Nov. 20, the report says, a USCP officer found Nehls’ “staff only door wide open with no one in the area.”

The officer entered, and then saw a white board with text about body armor and an accompanying map of the Capitol campus.

The officer “noticed a White Board with suspicious writings mentioning body armor with an outline of the Rayburn Building next to the Longworth building with an ‘x’ marked at the C Street entrance of the Rayburn,” the report says.

The officer departed, the report says, locking the door. The report doesn’t address the photo that Nehls said was taken, or the follow-up conversation with the ersatz construction workers. It was created on Nov. 23, 2021 — one day after the alleged follow-up encounter.

“If Capitol Police leadership had spent as much time preparing for January 6 as they spent investigating my white board, the January 6 riot never would have happened,” Nehls fumed to The Federalist, which published an article about the incident on Tuesday morning.

The Federalist explained the map as a way to help an intern find an ice machine, and said that the body armor was a reference to legislation that would ban the procurement of China-made body armor.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) took to the floor on Tuesday to say he is “hopeful” that his GOP colleagues will cooperate with a three-week continuing resolution to keep the government funded ahead of Friday’s looming shutdown deadline.

“No one and certainly not my Republican colleagues want a Republican government shutdown,” Schumer said. “So I’m hopeful they will cooperate with us to pass this necessary CR which every single Democrats wants.”

Schumer’s remarks come a day after Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) threatened to hold up the bill to keep the government funded until the Biden administration addresses her questions about a debunked conspiracy theory involving … crack pipes. Like many GOP grievances these days, the conspiracy theory was birthed in the right-wing media swamps and has made its way to the halls of Congress, becoming Republicans’ latest talking point for obstruction.

In a now-viral article published by the conservative news outlet Washington Free Beacon last week, the publication falsely reported that the Biden administration planned to distribute “crack pipes” as part of a $30 million public health grant package.

So what is this lie based on? Something that would actually save the lives of a lot of red-state drug addicts. I guess those people don't vote so much, though, so Republicans would be fine just letting them die.

The Biden administration has denied the claims in the report. But more importantly, the Beacon’s accusations are simply not true. The new public health grant program is designed to help reduce health risks associated with drug use and confront the rise in overdose deaths in the U.S., which have skyrocketed during the pandemic. The Harm Reduction Grant Program was introduced in December. Local communities can apply for the grant, offered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

The program does include safe smoking kits, but there are no pipes involved, per the White House last week: “A safe smoking kit may contain alcohol swabs, lip balm, other materials to promote hygiene and reduce the transmission of diseases like HIV and hepatitis,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said last Wednesday.

GOP senators in recent days have stretched themselves thin to avoid engaging with calls for Justice Clarence Thomas to recuse himself from Jan. 6-related cases in light of his wife, Ginni Thomas’ explosive pro-coup texts sent to then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows in the weeks after the 2020 presidential election.

In remarks on the Senate floor on Wednesday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) maintained his defense of Justice Thomas, characterizing calls for his recusal from election cases as part of an “inappropriate pressure campaign” by Democrats.

“It has no basis in Justice Thomas’s decades of impeccable service on the court. The justice and the entire court should feel free to completely ignore all this,” McConnell said.

After praising Justice Thomas as “a great American” and an “outstanding justice,” McConnell knocked calls for his recusal as “clumsy bullying from the political branches” that is “really beyond the pale.”

“Justice Thomas is an exemplary jurist who has modeled fidelity to the rule of law for more than 30 years and counting,” McConnell continued.

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt has faced a backlash since Politico reported earlier this week that he indirectly funds and wields unusually heavy influence over an important White House office tasked with advising President Joe Biden’s administration on technical and scientific issues.

The ethical concerns surrounding this news are glaring: A tech billionaire with an obvious personal interest in shaping government tech policy is giving money to an independent government agency devoted to tech and science, albeit through his private philanthropic foundation.

The real scandal, however, is that a government office needed philanthropic aid to fund its work in the first place, creating an ethical quandary over potential conflicts of interest.

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) is responsible for advising the president on a vital and wide breadth of public policy — whether it’s “a people’s Bill of Rights for automated technologies” or the gargantuan effort of preparing for future pandemics. It also has a meager $5 million annual budget — which means it has to get creative to do its work.

“The use of staff from other federal agencies and the armed services, universities, and philanthropically funded nonprofits dates back five presidential administrations — but President Biden was the first to elevate the office to Cabinet level,” an OSTP spokesperson said in a statement to Recode.

According to the office, among the 127 people who currently work there, only 25 are OSTP employees. The remaining are a mix of temporary appointees from other federal agencies, as well as people from universities, science organizations, or fellowships that may be funded by philanthropy.

Enter Schmidt Futures, Schmidt’s private nonprofit that supports initiatives that use tech to address “hard-to-solve’’ scientific and societal problems. According to Politico, there was direct coordination between OSTP and a Schmidt Futures employee named Tom Kalil to secure funding for the office staff. Kalil had also served as an unpaid consultant to OSTP for four months while still working for Schmidt Futures, and he left the agency after ethics complaints in October 2021. The ties between Schmidt, his foundation, and OSTP go even deeper than that, with Politico reporting that “more than a dozen officials in the [then] 140-person White House office have been associates of Schmidt’s, including some current and former Schmidt employees.”

Both OSTP and Schmidt Futures maintain that their connection has been misconstrued as nefarious; they say this sort of partnership is par for the course.

In a statement, Schmidt Futures highlighted how the OSTP has been “chronically underfunded,” and said that it was proud to be among the “leading organizations” providing funding to OSTP. In other words, Schmidt Futures makes clear that it isn’t the only private organization to charitably provide much-needed monetary support to government agencies.

“The United States Government and the OSTP have used pooled philanthropic funding to ensure proper staffing across agencies for over 25 years,” the statement continues.

The computer repair shop owner who turned over Hunter Biden's alleged laptop to the FBI now says that many reports about photographs on the device are "misinformation."

During an interview with Real America's Voice, host Ed Henry asked John Paul Mac Isaac if he observed disturbing images of children on the laptop.

But Mac Isaac, a Trump supporter, explained that he contacted the FBI about the laptop because he was concerned about "national security" implications.

"That's what caused me to do a deep dive into the laptop once it became my property," Mac Isaac said. "During that time, I saw a lot of photos. I did not see a lot of photos that are being reported to be seen."

"I do know that there have been multiple attempts over the past year and a half to insert questionable material into the laptop as in not physically, but passing it off as misinformation or disinformation as coming from the laptop," he added. "And that is a major concern of mine because I have fought tooth and nail to protect the integrity of this drive."

In its press release issued late Friday, the FDOE announced it had disapproved what they said was a record number of math textbooks — 54 of 134 – submitted by publishers.

More than half the textbooks being disallowed incorporated “prohibited topics or unsolicited strategies, including CRT,” while others were not allowed because publishers “rebranded” Common Core Standards.

The titles of any textbooks deemed unacceptable were not disclosed by state officials. Most textbooks that will not be allowed for use by Florida public schools were for students in elementary grades kindergarten through fifth grade.

The FDOE’s announcement comes as Gov. Ron DeSantis has taken a lead role nationally in Republican efforts to aggressively push back against liberal cultural values and “woke indoctrination.”

The headline in FDOE’s press release over the banned textbooks emphasized DeSantis’ stance: “Florida Rejects Publishers’ Attempts to Indoctrinate Students.”

“It seems that some publishers attempted to slap a coat of paint on an old house built on the foundation of Common Core, and indoctrinating concepts like race essentialism, especially, bizarrely, for elementary school students,” said DeSantis in a statement accompanying the FDOE statement.

He said he was “grateful” that Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran and the FDOE “have conducted such a thorough vetting of these textbooks to ensure they comply with the law.”

In praising DeSantis’ leadership, Corcoran said “we continue to reinforce parents’ rights by focusing on providing their children with a world-class education without the fear of indoctrination or exposure to dangerous and divisive concepts in our classrooms.”

State Democrats condemned the FDOE’s actions and demanded the state release the list of banned textbooks.

Rep. Anna Eskamani, D-Orlando, called it part of the Republican Party’s agenda to eliminate critical thinking in schools.

“They’re accusing some invisible enemy of indoctrination. Meanwhile, they’re the ones indoctrinating students by attempting to censor mathematic textbooks,” Eskamani said.

Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith, D-Orlando, tweeted: “The governor “has turned our classrooms into political battlefields and this is just the beginning.”

“They haven’t shown us what’s inside the books that they claim is critical race theory indoctrination, and there’s a reason they won’t show us, because it’s not there,” Smith said in an interview. ”It’s all right-wing fantasy, and it’s the latest example of how the right-wing Moms for Liberty ideology is now in charge of setting public education policy in Florida.”

Eskamani, who said she requested the list of banned textbooks, tweeted: “I wonder if these math books highlighted statistics of racial disparities & that’s what they don’t like?

“If those statistics make you uncomfortable maybe do something about it instead of erase them?”

The FDOE told publishers in June 2021 to align textbook content with state laws by not including “culturally responsive teaching.” Publishers can appeal the rejection and also have the opportunity to revise book submissions.

In 2019, DeSantis issued an executive order in 2019 that eliminated Common Core standards as part of school curriculum requirements.

A Trump-appointed district court judge found Monday that in issuing its mask mandate for travel on public transportation, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) overstepped its authority.

In her order, District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle goes to great lengths in search of rationale to explain how the agency in charge of stifling disease spread could have been out of bounds in issuing a mandate to reduce the transmission of COVID-19 in crowded hotspots like airports and trains.

She dedicates pages of writing to the definition of the word “sanitation,” about which the CDC is empowered by law to promulgate regulations. While acknowledging that a definition of the word entails preserving something’s cleanliness, she rejects the agency’s interpretation.

“Wearing a mask cleans nothing,” Mizelle writes. “At most, it traps virus droplets. But it neither ‘sanitizes’ the person wearing the mask nor ‘sanitizes’ the conveyance.”

She later sprinkles in some vaccination fear-mongering for good measure.

“If Congress intended this definition, the power bestowed on the CDC would be breathtaking,” she writes, adding: “So too, a power to improve ‘sanitation’ would easily extend to requiring vaccinations against COVID-19, the seasonal flu, or other diseases.”

After stashing her dictionaries, she wades into a wider pool of anti-agency rhetoric to bolster her argument that the CDC is not empowered to issue regulations to achieve the task spelled out in its name.

Last week, the Florida Department of Education revealed that it had rejected many math books due to the "indoctrination" of students. But DeSantis and other state officials have been unable to provide any examples of CRT in math books.

"Florida Democrats are demanding to see examples of the CRT in these textbooks," Faulkner reported on Tuesday. "DeSantis so far, though, has said that he's set up a review but otherwise he's not budging."

"Not that it was anybody's intention, but they do need to come up with some examples on this," she added.

Guest Jason Rantz offered a conspiracy theory claiming that Bill and Melinda Gates are behind a plot to include CRT in math books.

The administration showed one math problem. No shock but it didn't exist in any of the banned text books. In fact it didn't exist in any textbooks at all.
