Fuck Epic Games! Leave my beloved Apple products alone. Last count I have 7 distinct types of Apple devices. Stop messing around. Fuck you again, Epic Games. I feel the same. I paid a premium for greater security. Outside of finding a real vulnerability there is no way for any company to trick me into downloading an app I don't want. Any download clearly goes through the App Store. And apps in the App Store are regularly vetted for bad behavior.
Epic demands access under terms they dictate to an ecosystem they didn't create. I'm a pretty hard "no" on that one.

Value of a platform company, exercising appropriate governance and security controls on behalf of its customers. And, customers reward them for it. Wanna circumvent those controls? Build something superior and eat into Apple's marketshare. App Store has fostered not frustrated innovation, unlike Amazon, which waits for someone else to prove out a concept on their dime, and then simply use its platform dominance to take over.

To me it is much ado about nothing. A reasonable compromise is allow third party apps, but let people know that installing apps outside of their store may be risky. Those that want walled garden can have it, but those who now have to jail break their devices to use them the way they want would no longer have to do that. In the end the weakest link in the security of a device has always been between the keyboard and the chair. I have been using Windows since the early nineties and have never had anything close to a serious infection on any of my devices. Risk of malware is also directly proportional to market share. If iOS gains much more market share expect an increase of malware for it, regardless of walled garden or not.

Those that want walled garden can have it, but those who now have to jail break their devices to use them the way they want would no longer have to do that. And yet Microsoft has gotten hammered over security issues because there security holes have been exploited so widely. It's easy to say "Hey, it's on you now!" but that's not how it plays out in the press. Apple markets iOS as being more secure and limiting apps to the App Store is a big (HUGE!) part of that. As tales of woe start getting broadcast it won't do them a lick of good to point their fingers and say it's their users' fault no matter how true it is. It's already pretty high in nations like the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. Android is definitely the runaway favorite in poorer nations but then that's not where the money is so I'd say iOS is quite the target today. It's got a massive user base and a lot of those users have something worth hacking for.

A friend of mine posted this. If you have an Amazon Alexa or other device like Ring doorbell be sure to check your settings and opt out. I checked mine and the feature was "off" but be sure to check on June 8. WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG? — Amazon devices will soon automatically share your Internet with neighborsIf you use Alexa, Echo, or any other Amazon device, you have only 10 days to opt out of an experiment that leaves your personal privacy and security hanging in the balance. On June 8, the merchant, Web host, and entertainment behemoth will automatically enroll the devices in Amazon Sidewalk. The new wireless mesh service will share a small slice of your Internet bandwidth with nearby neighbors who don’t have connectivity and help you to their bandwidth when you don’t have a connection. arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/05/amazon-devices-will-soon-automatically-share-your-internet-with-neighbors/?fbclid=IwAR3UDrOFNobNdPVYr9hSRrIZu_POpFfgbDKPrRIYOxoFN2q5Tua6nGsKI9M

The security of some of our critical infrastructure is ... lacking. And another example of same. I think the debacle in Oldsmar, FL towards the end of last year was discussed in Legacy TRS. In case you thought, "Well, that was just Flori-DUH," think again.
Lovely thought, huh?

This is scary. If I had a child in school I'd be at every school board meeting demanding to know exactly what monitoring software was being used, who had access to it, who had access to the data it harvested, how to guarantee it was turned off outside of class hours, etc. Everything about this is screaming to be abused. Imagine a pedophile who has free access to children's conversations. It makes it so much easier to spot, examine, and groom your victims. They might even get access to some private and embarrassing things to use for emotional blackmail. But hey, what are the odds that something like this could happen in large organizations responsible for the safety of children?

Some people hate the restrictions of the Apple's App Store but they have a great track record of catching malicious software. Google has not been as successful. (Their initial wide open stance was a predictable and predicted disaster.)

In case you haven’t noticed, Amazon and a multitude of internet entities are having major down problems.
“Downdetector” app is about 1/3 red and 1/3 yellow. This app doesn’t really tell you why but it does show what part of the entity is down.

This one is bad. It's only a matter of time before one of these vulnerabilities is exploited and wreaks havoc across the globe. It sounds like this one still has potential to allow a lot of damage to be done.
