A North Carolina man is turning down an opportunity at a lifesaving kidney transplant, because the hospital is requiring he be vaccinated against COVID before the procedure.

Chad Carswell is a double amputee and has been undergoing dialysis up to three times a week. His kidney is functioning at four percent.

Carswell said he was going through the transplant process at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem when he was told he would need to be vaccinated in order to move forward.

"They said the last thing we need talk about is your vaccination status," Carswell said. "And that's when I politely told him there was nothing really to talk about. It wasn't up for debate that I wasn't getting it. And then he told me, you know you'll die if you don't get it. And I said I'm willing to die."

The hospital says their policy follows the current standard in the U.S. saying the vaccine is required to protect the patient, who is at high risk for severe illness if they don't have immunity prior to the transplant.

Carswell said he's already had COVID twice and is not willing to get the vaccine, even if it means giving up on finding a kidney.

Another fake vaccine card scam that reportedly raked in $1.5 million.

A New York Police Department officer is reportedly being investigated after Suffolk County prosecutors charged his spouse with allegedly carrying out a $1.5 million scheme to sell fake coronavirus vaccine cards to anti-vaxxers and others looking to dodge work or government mandates.

On Friday, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office charged 49-year-old nurse practitioner Julie DeVuono, who runs Amityville’s Wild Child Pediatric Healthcare, and 44-year-old employee licensed practical nurse Marissa Urraro with forgery in the second degree, saying they used the clinic to offer patients fake vaccine cards that would then be entered into a state immunization database. These cards apparently ran at $220 a pop for adults, with children costing $85. DeVuono’s husband is Derin DeVuono, an NYPD pilot who in December 2020 managed to evade serious disciplinary action for allegedly misusing a Cessna aircraft. The incident allegedly included flying an aircraft in a flight pattern shaped like a penis to send a message to a supervisor (he sacrificed just five days in paid vacation).

According to the New York Daily News, sources said that Derin DeVuono is facing an NYPD internal affairs investigation to determine whether he played any role in directing illicit business to his spouse’s clinic. Authorities seized some $900,000 in cash and a ledger indicating up to $1.5 million in proceeds from the scam at the DeVuono’s home last week, the paper wrote. The NYPD didn’t respond to Gizmodo’s request for comment on the report or whether Derin DeVuono has been suspended or faced any other disciplinary action from the department.

Forged vaccine cards have long been an issue—they bear the official seal of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a federal agency, and the FBI has warned that forging them could be a federal crime. Last month, New York Governor Kathy Hochul also signed into law a bill that made producing or using such a fake card a class A misdemeanor. DeVuono and Urraro both face charges of felony forgery, and DeVuono faces an additional charge of offering a false instrument for filing, according to the Associated Press.

New vaccination and booster effectiveness stats are out. As TPM says, they're "eye-popping."

These numbers came out a week or ten days ago. I had seen them before. But seeing them mentioned again today just made me marvel. In December 2021 unvaccinated people in the United States were 97 times more likely to die of COVID than people who are vaccinated and boosted. 97 times more likely. Just think about that number.

The metric is ‘only’ 14 times more likely compared to people who are vaccinated but not boosted. That is a remarkable level of protective benefit by any standard. But I find the degree of benefit from the booster even more eye-popping. It’s not a marginal difference. And to think tens of millions of Americans simply refuse to take this simple, free step.

I really can't bring myself to care about the COVID outcomes for the unvaccinated (except for whose with a valid reason which is a slim minority) as long as responsible people aren't hurt by it. They made their choice.

A former supervisor of Joseph Ladapo would not recommend him for the job of Florida's surgeon general, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's background investigation for his confirmation to the top medical post.

“In my opinion, the people of Florida would be better served by a Surgeon General who grounds his policy decisions and recommendations on the best scientific evidence rather than opinions,” the unnamed supervisor at the University of California, Los Angeles, said in the Jan. 18 report prepared by a senior crime intelligence analyst for the Senate.

The supervisor added that Ladapo’s contrary views about COVID-19 created a stressful environment for his research and clinical colleagues and subordinates at UCLA. They felt his opinions, published in national news outlets, knocking “COVID mania” and lockdowns violated the duty in the Hippocratic Oath to behave honestly and ethically, the supervisor said.

Ladapo's views also led to "stress and acrimony among his coworkers and supervisors during the last year and a half of his employment,” he said in the report obtained through a public records request to the Senate by the USA TODAY NETWORK - Florida.

The only reason Ladapo received a favorable review was because he did the job he was hired to do, the supervisor said.

“It is important to note that during this time at UCLA, he met all of the contractual obligations for the position that he was hired to perform, which is the underpinning of my otherwise satisfactory evaluation,” the supervisor said.

In responding to the supervisor's scathing assessment, Jeremy Redfern, press secretary for the Department of Health, characterized Ladapo as a misunderstood visionary who is under attack for having "difficult discussions" about what's best for people during the pandemic.

"Doctors who were considered ahead of their time were applauded for their brilliance throughout history, but it now appears that being at the forefront of ideas and following the data is now considered a political game," Redfern said.

Reaction to background check: 'I wish I was surprised'

The Harvard-educated Ladapo was a tenured associate professor of medicine in the General Internal Medicine and Health Services Research Division at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine from June 2016 to September 2021.

That's when Ladapo was tapped by Gov. Ron DeSantis at the same time he was quickly hired by the University of Florida College of Medicine as an associate professor in general internal medicine.

His contract requires him to spend 80% of his time as surgeon general and running the Department of Health, and 20% teaching and conducting research at UF. His combined salary is $437,000 a year.

Ladapo, who replaced Dr. Scott Rivkees, now a professor at Brown University in Rhode Island, is going through the confirmation process in the Senate. After a party-line vote to approve his nomination in the first hearing, he has one more appearance at the Ethics and Elections Committee before his confirmation goes to a floor vote.

The FDLE conducted a comprehensive background investigation as a part of the confirmation process as required by state law. The FDLE checked state criminal databases and investigative files, driver license history, credit reports, employment verification, state and local law enforcement and district attorneys, court records, property tax records and professional licensure records and found no derogatory information other than the supervisor's comments.

The agency also said it was unable to verify Ladapo's employment status with the University of Florida using the automated, fee-based verification system that requires a "work number" to proceed.

"I wish I was surprised but I'm not," said Sen. Annette Taddeo, D-Miami, co-chair of the Ethics and Elections Committee and a candidate for governor. "It's very clear that the Senate should not confirm his nomination under any circumstances."

Ladapo is creating the same discomfort in Florida that he created at UCLA, she said, noting the recent decision to place Orange County's top health official on administrative leave after he sent an email to staff encouraging them to get vaccinated. The department hasn’t given a specific reason for his being placed on leave but is investigating if any laws were broken.

The unnamed supervisor's warning is apropos, Taddeo said, because Floridians are seeing "actual health professionals being punished and shut down ... because they expressed a medical opinion and made a recommendation based on science."

Redfern said the supervisor's comments are an attempt to smear Ladapo's reputation ahead of his confirmation hearing.

"It’s unfortunate that a single comment from a disgruntled supervisor would find facilitating discussions a cause for concern, especially during such an ever-evolving medical landscape," Redfern said. "This is not cause for concern."

Redfern pointed to several of Ladapo's accomplishments during his 10 years as a medical researcher and academic, including:

Millions of dollars in grants from the National Institutes of Health to study cardiovascular disease and tobacco cessation;
Funding from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, and the National Institute on Drug Abuse, to research patient-centered approaches to improving the health of individuals evaluated for coronary artery disease; and
Research on behavioral economic interventions to promote sustainable cardiovascular health, including among adults with HIV.

UCLA supervisor's comments back up MSNBC report

The supervisor’s comments underscore what four of Ladapo’s colleagues told MSNBC under condition of anonymity in November.

In the early days of the pandemic, Ladapo wrote several articles, including pieces for USA TODAY and the Wall Street Journal, about “COVID mania,” advising against lockdowns and mask mandates, based on his own experience treating patients infected with COVID-19.

UCLA tried to get the Wall Street Journal to add a disclaimer to the column Ladapo wrote for them, but to no avail, according to an MSNBC report in November.

Ladapo was also among the dozen or so physicians calling themselves America’s Frontline Doctors who appeared on the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court in July 2020 to tout hydroxychloroquine as a treatment against COVID-19, a drug that has been found to have no benefit against the disease.

The group's co-founder Simone Gold, who introduced Ladapo as a friend at other events, was indicted in connection with the Jan. 6 Capitol riots.

One of the participants was Dr. Stella Immanuel, who has stated that some ailments are caused by "demon sperm" and that alien DNA is used in some medical treatments.

The four who spoke to MSNBC said Ladapo’s appearance in that news conference raised concerns at UCLA about the credibility of his work and the impact his words were having on the university.

“A lot of people here at UCLA are glad that he is gone because we were embarrassed by his opinions and behavior. At the same time, we don’t wish this on the people of Florida. They don’t deserve to have someone like him making their health decisions,” said one of the UCLA sources.

Ladapo has stirred things up since first day on job

Ladapo has stirred up controversy since day one as Surgeon General.

He signaled a dramatic departure from his predecessor and from federal health officials by saying fear wouldn’t dictate his decisions. He’s made public statements downplaying the effectiveness of the COVID vaccine and wearing masks to slow the spread of the pandemic.

On his second day on the job, Ladapo signed an emergency order that strengthened bans on school mask mandates and stripped schools of the authority to quarantine students who had come in contact with the COVID-19 virus for up to four days, leaving that decision to parents.

A month later, he drew the ire of Senate Democrats, and Senate President Wilton Simpson, a Republican, when he refused to wear a mask in the office of state Sen. Tina Polsky at her request. She was being treated for cancer at the time.

At his first confirmation hearing, he refused to apologize for his interaction with Polsky. He also was asked five times whether the COVID-19 vaccines worked and declined to give a yes-or-no answer.

His long and often evasive answers triggered Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book to lead a walk out of her fellow Democrats before the committee voted to recommend Ladapo’s confirmation.

"We have an extreme amount of respect for the process, but we are not getting any answers," Book said.

Anti–vaccine mandate protesters in Ottawa received some help from their neighbors to the south, the Ottawa police chief said Wednesday, with a "significant element" from the U.S. involved with funding and planning the event.

Thousands of people descended on Ottawa Friday to demonstrate against Canada's efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19, including vaccine mandates and mask wearing. Many came in their big rigs, specifically protesting the rule that truck drivers who cross the border must be fully vaccinated. The Canadian Trucking Alliance says a vast majority of its members are fully vaccinated and insists several people at the protest over the weekend "do not have a connection to the trucking industry."

"They have converged in our city, and there are plans for more to come," Ottawa Police Chief Peter Sloly said on Wednesday. All of the participants, he added, are "putting our city and our residents, our partners, and our officers at great risk."

It’s an all-too-familiar story at this point: A person pushing an unproven COVID-19 cure—and pushing back against the vaccines—pays the ultimate price for their skepticism.

But this time, there’s a new wrinkle. It’s not just one person dabbling in COVID quackery with tragic results; it’s actually a mysterious dark money organization, with ties to influential MAGA figures like Steve Bannon and MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell.

This story, which unfolded nearly 18 months ago, would have likely gone untold if it weren’t for one person: Kenneth Happel.

Happel claims to have partnered with the group, Propter Strategies, in its secretive work. But eventually, he became another victim of it.

To this day, Propter Strategies is a black hole, despite its high-profile connections and multimillion-dollar budget. Aside from Happel’s account, there is no evidence of Propter’s activities anywhere in the public record. And that might be with good reason: Those activities included hawking the snake-oil COVID treatment oleandrin at the highest levels of the government, as the pandemic’s lethal second wave peaked across the country.

Happel, as it turns out, currently lies in a Las Vegas hospital bed fending off his second COVID infection. Less than two weeks ago, the disease took his wife’s life.

But in a phone interview from his hospital bed, Happel, 72, remained unrepentant and defiant about the numerous baseless theories that quite likely landed him back in the hospital, and killed the wife he loved dearly.

Happel still places hope in the pseudoscience that he, Propter Strategies, and Lindell had pushed so hard—a proprietary compound derived from oleander extract, which the pillow tycoon and at least one Propter official had invested in.

None of Propter’s board members replied to The Daily Beast’s multiple requests for comment for this article. Happel himself was hard to find.

That’s because, aside from incorporation and tax documents, Propter is essentially invisible.

The future of the pandemic is looking clearer as we learn more about infection

During the early days of the pandemic, scientists and doctors were concerned that being infected with SARS-CoV-2 might not trigger a strong immune response in many people – thus an infection might not provide long-term protection.

"Immunity to Covid-19 could be lost in months, UK study suggests," a headline from The Guardian alerted back in July 2020. "King's College London team found steep drops in patients' antibody levels three months after infection," the story warned.

But that idea was based on preliminary data from the laboratory — and on a faulty understanding of how the immune system works. Now about a year and a half later, better data is painting a more optimistic picture about immunity after a bout of COVID-19. In fact, a symptomatic infection triggers a remarkable immune response in the general population, likely offering protection against severe disease and death for a few years.

And if you're vaccinated on top of it, your protection is likely even better, studies are consistently showing.

Connecticut: The statewide school mask mandate will be lifted on Feb. 28.

Delaware: Universal indoor mask requirements (except for schools) will be lifted on Feb. 11. School mask requirements will be lifted on March 31.

Though really, I believe that the Governor lifted the statewide mandate in response to politics as he did last June when he lifted the mandates.  Infection rates were going down back then but it seemed to me that lack of a mask mandate signaled to some people that vaccinations were no longer necessary and so they didn't seek them out.

Numerous studies have found that deer can readily contract the coronavirus. Last November, for instance, researchers from Penn State University and elsewhere reported that up to a third of free-living and captive deer in Iowa carried traces of the virus from late 2020 to early 2021. Some of these same researchers from Penn State and others, including those with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, have released their latest findings this week on the preprint website bioRxiv.

The team tested blood and nasal samples from wild deer living on Staten Island that were temporarily captured as part of a sterilization program to keep the population in check. The samples were collected between December 2021 and January 2022, and the scientists performed antibody and RNA tests on them.

Overall, 14.5% of 131 deer that had their blood taken tested positive for antibodies to the coronavirus, indicating a prior infection. About 10% of the 68 deer that had nasal swabs taken tested positive for an acute infection. And when the researchers sequenced the genetics of these positive samples, they found that some had caught the Omicron variant, the most transmissible version of the coronavirus to emerge yet.

The Omicron found in these deer bore a close genetic resemblance to Omicron strains found in human residents of the city, all but confirming that humans had somehow been the source of the deer infections. It’s unclear how this is happening, but direct contact via hand-feeding or through exposure to contaminated wastewater or trash are possibilities. Interestingly, at least one infected deer had both an active infection and very high antibody levels, possibly indicating that it had been reinfected.

This work, the researchers say in their paper, clearly shows that Omicron “can infect white-tailed deer and highlights an urgent need for comprehensive surveillance of susceptible animal species to identify ecological transmission networks and better assess the potential risks of spillback to humans.”
