Italy and Its Lurch to Authoritarianism

Italy looks like they just elected a right-wing nutjob. There are just too many people who want this kind of government and too many people who are too lazy to even get their asses out to vote against it.

Matteo Salvini, the leader of Italy’s far-right League, has promised that his alliance with Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy will deliver a long-lasting government, as Italians begin to digest the outcome of an election that will bring about the country’s most rightwing government since the end of the second world war.

Final results gave the coalition control of both houses of parliament with 44% of the vote and confirmed a swing in the balance of power in the Italian far right towards Meloni as her party made spectacular gains in the League’s northern strongholds of Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Meloni is expected to be given a mandate from the president, Sergio Mattarella, to form a government after 13 October, meaning she could take office by the end of next month.

Brothers of Italy, a party with neo-fascist origins, scored 26% of the vote, while the League took 9%, an abysmal result for a party that in 2019 was polling at almost 40%. The third member of the coalition is Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia.

The outcome nonetheless makes Salvini, who enacted tough anti-migrant measures during his stint as interior minister in 2018-19, a key protagonist in a government that will be hostile towards immigrants, LGBTQ+ people and women seeking to access safe abortions.

The first Republicans are already showing their boners over the coming of a more fascist Italy. They and Hungary will be their favorite nations, now that Russia has proven itself weak.

Congratulations to Giorgia Meloni and the winners of the Italian elections. We look forward to working with her and other Italian leaders to advance our shared interests. America is stronger when Italy is strong, sovereign, prosperous, and free.

This babbling lines up perfectly with the victim mentality of the Republican American Reich Fascist party. There are any number of major GOP figures who could deliver this same nonsense to pathetic crowds of angry, ignorant morons desperate to pin their lot in life on anybody but themselves or the governments they actually voted for.

Today Berlusconi claimed he had an exchange of “sweet” letters with V Putin. They also exchanged gifts in the form of vodka and wine. Putin apparently claimed Berlusconi is one of his 5 best friends. Berlusconi’s party is expressing the new Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs.

In the meanwhile a photo of Mussolini appeared on the wall of a room in one of the government buildings. It was then removed “to avoid instrumental criticism”. The l new President of the Senate however claimed that this was “cancel culture”.

About that. The new President of the Senate has a number of fascist, let’s say, souvenirs in his home. These include a small statue of the Duce he proudly showed in a video available online.
