Alabama has joined states trying to limit drag shows after legislation was filed Thursday that would prohibit the performances in public places where children are present. The bill by Republican Rep. Arnold Mooney would add a provision to the state’s anti-obscenity laws to prohibit “male or female impersonators, commonly known as drag queens or drag kings” from performing in K-12 public schools, public libraries, and in other public places where minors are present.

The Human Rights Campaign — the largest LGBTQ+ advocacy group in the country — joined several other civil rights organizations Tuesday and issued a travel advisory for Florida, warning that newly passed state laws may pose risks to minorities, immigrants and the LGBTQ+ community.

The travel advisory from groups — including the NAACP, the League of United Latin American Citizens and the Florida Immigrant Coalition and Equality Florida — come as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to announce his 2024 presidential bid on Wednesday during a discussion with Twitter CEO Elon Musk.

“Because of Ron DeSantis and his frenzied appeal to extremists, LGBTQ+ people in Florida are finding themselves in a state of emergency every single day,” president of the Human Rights Campaign Kelley Robinson said in a statement. “Since the day he took office, Governor DeSantis has weaponized his position to weave bigotry, hate, and discrimination into public law for his own political gain.”

The organization did not call for a boycott or a blanket recommendation against travel but outlined some of the new, restrictive laws passed by DeSantis and the Republican-controlled legislature — including “laws that are hostile to the LGBTQ community, restrict access to reproductive health care, repeal gun safety policies, foment racial prejudice, and attack public education by banning books and censoring curriculum.”

Target announced it will remove some of its LGBTQ+ merchandise from its Pride Month collection after threats and backlash from customers, making the corporation just one of several recent examples of prominent companies caving to right wing attacks on the LGBTQ+ community.

The mega retailer has offered products celebrating Pride Month for more than a decade, but according to company spokeswoman Kayla Castañeda stores have experienced an uptick in threats against staff safety over this year’s collection.

“Given these volatile circumstances, we are making adjustments to our plans, including removing items that have been at the center of the most significant confrontational behavior,” Castañeda said in a statement.

I was talking with a friend who is gay who said she never liked the Pride merchandising because it was just done to get some sales, not done out of any commitment to helping people.  As predicted the minute a company gets push back they decide to drop the merchandise.

During another school board meeting in October, Utterback held up enlarged prints of two pages from the award-winning graphic memoir “Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic,” while a member of a parent association fighting for the ban spoke, arguing that handing the material to a child amounts to “solicitation of a minor.”

Accusations against Utterback, according to court documents, describe separate instances in 2020 in which he allegedly touched a 12-year-old girl under her clothes and rubbed a teenager’s leg underneath her jeans. Another case alleged in 2021 that he showed pornographic video footage to a child starting from when she was around 4 years old.

On the heels of the Dodgers disinvitation to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to the Pride Night and the re-invitation of them, some Republicans in the CA state legislature protest a recognition of honoring the head sister of the San Francisco group on religious grounds...yeah right.  A wave of concern about drag queens has nothing to do with the protest, yeah right!

Republicans in the Senate called on Senate President pro Tem Toni Atkins, D-San Diego, to revoke Roma’s invitation last Thursday. A group of Catholic and evangelical Christian demonstrators gathered on the Capitol’s west steps Monday afternoon to protest Roma’s recognition. In the Assembly, when Roma came to the front to receive her award, Republican members left the floor and retreated to the lounge in the rear of the chamber. The remaining members clapped, whooped and cheered, giving Roma a prolonged standing ovation.

The Senate Republican Caucus wrote last week to Senate pro Tem Toni Atkins, D-San Diego, asking her to revoke Sister Roma’s invitation. In the letter authored by Senate Minority Leader Brian Jones, R-San Diego, the lawmakers characterized the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence as “well known for their public denigration of the Catholic faith” and requested the withdrawal of the invitation because “it sends a troubling message to Californians of all faiths.”

The Sisters are drag queens. The point of their group is to do good deeds doing a lot of fundraising to deal with issues in the gay community including AIDS and activism to protect their community...and yes they poke fun at hypocrisy OH MY!

A 46-year-old man from a tiny town in Montana has been sentenced to 18 years in prison on federal hate crime charges, after he shot at a gay woman’s house and nearly killed her with an AK-47 with the intent of “ridding a town of LGBTQI+ residents,” according to prosecutors. On March 22, 2020, John Russell Howald armed himself with three rifles and two pistols, and fired an assault rifle into the house of a woman who “identified as a lesbian,” the feds say. She was at home at the time but was not injured. On his way to target other local queer people, Howald ran into a congregation leaving a church service, and told them about “his mission of killing lesbian and gay people in town,” according to prosecutors. The pastor attempted to talk Howald down and inadvertently recorded 10 mins of their conversation, in which Howald said “he might have killed a lesbian and that he hoped he had,” according to court documents. Howald fled but was arrested the next day. He was convicted of hate and firearms crimes in February.

San Diego's library network has seen over a dozen LGBTQ+ books checked out by two patrons who vow not to return them until the library's Pride display is removed, as reported by CBS8.

The Rancho Peñasquitos Library received an email from the two protestors in mid-June after they had borrowed 14 displayed books, according to the San Diego Tribune. They objected to the books' discussions of gender and sexuality.

"Minor children have the right to belong to a community that respects their innocence and allows families to discuss sex and sexual attraction privately, and only when parents consider it appropriate," the email to the library read, as per the outlet.

Misty Jones, the Head Librarian, told the publication that backlash against Pride-focused inclusivity efforts has become "progressively worse" over the past five years, but "this is a new one for us."

It's not enough for them to control their own children's lives, they demand that they get to control all children's lives.

Ordinarily this would not be a surprising or especially newsworthy story, at least not at the national level. A controversy-tangled freshman Republican member of the Florida state House of Representatives, Fabian Basabe, has been accused of sexual harassment and some mix of unwanted touching and assault by two members of his staff. Basabe, 45, is billed as a former New York City socialite who appeared on a couple reality shows. He’s married Martina Borgomanero, the heiress to a lingerie fortune. (A very South Florida story as you can tell, he represents Miami Beach and environs.) He was already in some hot water in his socially tolerant, gay-friendly district for voting in lockstep with state Republicans pushing Ron DeSantis’s anti-“woke”/LGBTQ agenda. The accusers are one staffer, Nicholas Frevola, 25, and one former intern, Jacob Cutbirth, 24.

As I said, not unremarkable but bordering on a news story cliche: Apparently closeted, if in this case perhaps lightly closeted, Republican Rep accused of harassing and fondling male staffers. He denies it; news at 11.

Where it gets interesting though is that the investigation by The Miami Herald and CBS News Miami strongly suggests a cover up by the Republican leadership of the state House, specifically House Speaker Paul Renner, a key DeSantis ally.

Shortly before midnight on July 29, the NYPD received a call regarding a stabbing at a Brooklyn gas station, police said.

When officers arrived, they found 28-year-old O'Shae Sibley with a stab wound to his torso. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

No arrests have been made, but police sources told WCBS on Tuesday that the NYPD has identified a suspect and the incident is being investigated as a possible hate crime.

Surveillance footage from the gas station shows Sibley and his friends getting into an argument with a group of men as well as the commotion surrounding Sibley's stabbing.

Witnesses said Sibley and his friends were dancing and voguing when a man walked up to them and allegedly made homophobic comments, CBS New York reported.

Conservatives need to “be more homophobic” and “take it up a notch,” a right-wing pundit said Wednesday night on Newsmax, claiming “this is a war between good and evil” and people need to “stand tall.”

The call for heightened bigotry against the LGBTQ community came during a discussion in which Newsmax host Eric Bolling and his guests raged against Assistant Secretary for Health Rachel Levine, who has frequently been the target of right-wing attacks for being transgender and for her advocacy for gender-affirming care.

With conservative media centering much of its content on fear-mongering about “groomers,” as Republicans continue to push anti-trans legislation, the latest outrage lighting up the right-wing ecosphere revolves around Levine praising Identity Alaska, a gender clinic in Alaska. Soon after, Fox News and other conservative outlets noted that the clinic promotes gender-inclusive education guides that suggest replacing the word “mother” with “egg producer” or “birth parent.”

During Wednesday night’s broadcast of The Balance, Bolling hosted Common Sense executive editor Chris Bedford and Shemeka Michelle, a podcaster and Christian rapper who recently had a viral hit with the anti-LGBTQ song “Reclaim the Rainbow.” You can already tell where this is going.
