Colorado authorities have identified the man who allegedly killed his wife and two of their children before killing himself in an apparent murder-suicide over the weekend as 55-year-old Christof M. Kreb, a local gun store owner and competitive shooter. Sheriff’s deputies discovered the four bodies following a 911 call from a child inside the home who told the dispatcher that one of his siblings wasn’t moving.

The NRA is getting hit with a lawsuit over tens of millions in illegal campaign contributions spanning years. Time to call in the DOJ to investigate them and any recipients.

Former congresswoman Gabby Giffords is suing the NRA over an alleged illegal scheme to funnel campaign contributions to Republican candidates, including Donald Trump.

The Campaign Legal Center filed the suit Tuesday on behalf of Giffords alleging the gun lobbying organization engaged in a broad pattern of activity in violation of the Federal Election Campaign Act by making as much as $35 million in illegal campaign contributions to seven federal candidates, including candidates for U.S. Senate and Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.

"The NRA has long acted like it is above the law, and it has done so flagrantly in the last several election cycles," said David Pucino, Giffords Law Center senior staff attorney. "This lawsuit demonstrates that the NRA broke the law by illegally coordinating with federal campaigns and funneling millions of dollars to candidates who supported their extremist, deadly agenda. We are suing the NRA to finally hold them accountable for actions that corrupted politicians and undermined our democracy."

Giffords filed a series of Federal Election Commission complaints about the scheme in 2018, and the U.S. District Court in Washington ordered the federal agency on Sept. 30 to act on the complaint within 30 days -- and she sued the NRA directly after the FEC again failed to act.

Safety is critical when having firearms in the home. If one is a police officer they should be safer. If two are they should be extra safe. What? Oh ... never mind.

An off-duty police officer was shot in the chest and killed by another off-duty officer during an argument in the Chicago home they shared, authorities have said. The officers involved were husband and wife, according to NBC Chicago. The wounded officer, 44, was transported to a hospital on Tuesday evening in “very critical condition,” according to a Chicago Fire Department spokesperson. He was pronounced dead shortly afterward. No charges have been announced for the surviving officer, but police said she will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days. Local authorities and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability are still actively investigating the incident.

I was surprised to see that Kyle Rittenhouse took the stand in his own defense today.  I put this in Guns threads because I see this situation as a perfect example for why untrained, immature (immaturity can stick with someone long after age 18) people should not be carrying arms anywhere out in the world with the rest of us.  Weapons to defend the home, the actual home, I can take that even if they look stupid as the couple in St Louis did.

This is also an illustration of vigilanteism. Police officers stalking around with weapons is a necessary evil...at least they're trained for something, sorta.  These wanna be cops are a danger to all of us.

And how about the first guy he shot who was wounded? He testified, in the prosecution's case, that he had a hand gun and "unintentionally" pointed it at Rittenhouse. Seems like Rittenhouse wasn't the only jerk there that night.

Let's just remember that Kyle Rittnehouse was in illegal possession of his firearm. To me that makes any and all things he did with it illegal and firmly his fault.

His legal team had a pretty interesting defense.

Attorneys for Kyle Rittenhouse, who is charged with fatally shooting two people during a protest in Wisconsin last year, argued that hunting laws allowed him to carry the assault-style weapon used during the shootings.

Wisconsin law prohibits anyone under age 18 from being armed, but Rittenhouse’s attorneys argued that state laws only forbid minors to carry short-barreled rifles and shotguns. The other prohibitions pertaining to children fall under hunting laws, which say children under age 12 can’t hunt with guns, Rittenhouse’s attorneys said at a hearing Tuesday.

Rittenhouse, of Antioch, Illinois, was 17 on Aug. 25, 2020, when he fatally shot two men and wounded another man while carrying an AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle at a protest prompted by a police shooting of a Black man, prosecutors have said.

“There appears to be an exception for 17-year-olds,” defense attorney Corey Chirafisi said, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Assistant District Attorney Thomas Binger responded that if the defense wants to tell a jury that Rittenhouse was only hunting, it should do so.

“They can submit evidence that the defendant had a certificate to hunt and he was engaged in legal hunting on the streets of Kenosha that night,” Binger said, according to the newspaper.

Binger declined to comment Wednesday. Chirafisi could not be immediately reached for comment.

As a legal matter, if Rittenhouse was illegally carrying a weapon, that would not make him guilty of murder if he was, in fact, reasonably defending himself. Ultimately, the reasonableness of his pulling the trigger is going to determine the jury's decision.

Sadly, the fact that this guy put himself into the situation that led to him firing at people doesn't seem to matter from a legal standpoint.  Instead, he gets to claim self defense and a jury could agree that it was self defense.

The trial is going completely off the rails. It's tough to excerpt the insanity but one comment I read basically said this one is straight out of an SNL skit.

Technology provided another interruption in the courtroom on Wednesday when Judge Schroeder’s phone went off with Lee Greenwood’s God Bless The USA as the ringtone.

The patriotic anthem has been heavily used at rallies and campaign events headlined by former President Donald Trump.

Also the pinch zoom feature that has been available on touch screens for many years is suddenly controversial. Apparently it's able to make a video show something completely different ... or something.

The prosecution took yet another hit later in the hearing when the defence sought to throw out iPad video of Mr Rittenhouse shooting Mr Rosenbaum over questions about the reliability of Apple’s pinch to zoom feature.

Mr Richards, who said he does not know anything about the technology “at all”, claimed that artificial intelligence inside Apple software on the device would distort the zoomed-in image by “creating what it thinks is there, not what necessarily is there.”

The objection set off a 10-minute debate, with Mr Binger arguing that pinch zooming on Apple devices is a “common part of everyday life” that all jurors would understand.

The prosecutor likened the feature to a magnifying glass, saying it does not diminish the video or otherwise manipulate the image on the screen. He suggested that the defence could call its own witness to prove otherwise.

But Judge Schroeder determined that it would be “high risk” to show the video in court without first disproving the claims from the defence. He said the burden of proof is on the prosecution because the video is part of its case.

The judge – who asked whether the video will be “in its virginal state” – dismissed comparisons to using a magnifying glass, saying: “I don’t believe that.”

Not understanding that the only "virginal state" of digital video is ones an zeroes shows a staggering lack of understanding on the judge's part. I don't see that being cured by any expert witness.

“I hope the Asian food isn’t coming... isn’t on one of those boats from Long Beach Harbor,” Kenosha County Circuit Court Judge Bruce Schroeder told the court on Thursday, possibly referring to the recent logjam at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. It was not immediately clear why Schroeder, who is presiding over a racially-charged case in Wisconsin, might make a joke about a port problem in California and Asian food.

The bizarre moment immediately spurred new outrage against a judge whose cranky demeanor and alleged bias in favor of the white defendant have been points of contention throughout the murder trial of a white teen who killed three people. Civil rights activist DeRay Mckesson tweeted: “It’s pretty clear that this man should not be a judge of anything.”

I haven't been watching but usually the technology is irrelevant since the evidence is presented by the witness who took it or some other witness who was there and the witness says the picture accurately reflects what he/she saw.
