A Catholic charity group based near the U.S.-Mexico border said Thursday that the conspiracy theorist Alex Jones had used his massive platform to stage a confrontation and falsely accuse the group of human trafficking.

In a video clip that, according to Jones’ website, has been viewed more than 1.5 million times, the far-right host and other members of his crew are seen standing in front of an SUV carrying several children and their mothers, stopping the vehicle from moving while alleging that the children were being trafficked.

“You got those smuggled children illegally!” Jones yelled at the vehicle’s driver during the incident.

“This is literally human smuggling!” another man with Jones shouted.

In reality, the video showed “a staged confrontation interrupting the goodwill of someone providing assistance in the form of transportation for three mothers and their children to the Humanitarian Respite Center,” said Sister Norma Pimentel, executive director of the Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley, in a statement to TPM.

The center and Catholic Charities have worked since the Obama administration t0 ensure that asylum-seekers and citizens have access to clothes, food and “a moment of rest,” Pimentel said. The website BorderReport.com detailed the group’s efforts to provide aid and COVID-19 testing to asylum-seekers in a report last month. The popularity of Jones’ video prompted Snopes.com to fact check it on Thursday.

The video’s headline screamed: “Alex Jones Stops Smugglers From Illegally Transporting Children At The Border.”

Pimentel’s statement did acknowledge one thing that Jones and his crew pointed out: “Ideally, the children should have been wearing seatbelts; unfortunately, this was not the case in this instance.”

But the seat belt infraction wasn’t Jones’ main concern.

“Your human smuggling’s going to stop, freak!” Jones yelled at the driver at one point in the video. Later, someone in Jones’ crew argued with passers-by: “These people are being human trafficked and raped! They’re being raped!”

In her three-page statement responding to Jones’ video, Pimentel expressed disappointment at what she said was an attempt to sensationalize her charity’s work.

InfoWars conspiracy theorist Alex Jones could finally face legal consequences over his claims that the 2012 Sandy Hook elementary school massacre was a false flag, with multiple civil cases filed by relatives of the victims set for trial in the spring of 2022.

But the bombastic radio host has one last-ditch strategy before one of those lawsuits reaches a Connecticut courtroom next May: deposing former Secretary of State and 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

In a July 1 court filing, Jones’ lawyers asked a judge to order Clinton to be deposed in the case. Clinton, who Jones once baselessly claimed “personally murdered and chopped up” children, has no connection to any of the Sandy Hook lawsuits. But Jones’ attorneys insist that Clinton should be interviewed as a witness, implying in court filings that she could somehow be involved in funding or organizing the lawsuits.

Alex Jones, the right-wing conspiracy theorist and founder of Infowars, is responsible for all damages in two lawsuits stemming from his false claims that the Sandy Hook school shooting was a “giant hoax,” a judge ruled this week.

District Judge Maya Guerra Gamble of Travis County, Tex., issued default judgments Monday against Jones and Infowars after he did not comply with court orders to give information in a pair of 2018 lawsuits brought against him by families of two children killed in the 2012 massacre. Jones repeatedly failed to hand over documents and evidence to the court supporting his damaging and erroneous claims that the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., which killed 26 people, 20 of whom were young children, was a “false flag” operation carried out by “crisis actors.”

Gamble’s ruling, which was unsealed Thursday, lambasted Jones and his website’s parent company, Free Speech Systems, for having “intentionally disobeyed” the court’s requests and showing “flagrant bad faith and callous disregard” in not turning over documents related to this and other lawsuits filed against him. Jones has already lost several defamation lawsuits related to his Sandy Hook falsehoods and was previously ordered to pay tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees to families who have sued him. Nine families have sued him over the years.

“An escalating series of judicial admonishments, monetary penalties, and non-dispositive sanctions have all been ineffective at deterring the abuse,” Gamble wrote.

The default judgments were first reported by HuffPost.

Mark Bankston, an attorney for the parents filing the two lawsuits, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday. Bankston said in a statement to CNN that Gamble’s rulings gave the two families “the closure they deserve.”

“Mr. Jones was given ample opportunity to take these lawsuits seriously and obey the rule of law,” Bankston said. “He chose not to do so, and now he will face the consequences for that decision.”

Brad Reeves, Jones’s attorney, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A statement issued by Jones and Norm Pattis, an attorney for Infowars, described the judge’s rulings as “stunning.”

“It takes no account of the tens of thousands of documents produced by the defendants, the hours spent sitting for depositions and the various sworn statements filed in these cases,” Jones and Pattis said, according to the statement. “We are distressed by what we regard as a blatant abuse of discretion by the trial court. We are determined to see that these cases are heard on the merits.”

Apparently they thought the best course of action is to simply throw out a big pile of shit but ignore the most basic discovery requests/demands of show tapes and transcripts. Jones's attorney is basically saying "but look how much we gave!" You know, because quantity is what's important.

On Aug. 31, Bankston appeared before Gamble and argued that Jones should be sanctioned for withholding information that had been requested about three years earlier, such as video of his on-air discussions about Sandy Hook, relevant transcripts from his shows and content of social media accounts connected to the conspiracy theorist and Infowars.

“We still don’t have the most basic information about this case,” Bankston told the judge. “Now we’re talking about having to find people three years out … to see who was involved in this case, who might still have documents. The quality of the evidence and of people’s memories all degrades.”

Frustrated by the lack of cooperation from Jones, attorneys for the parents sought out default judgments — a legal rarity that’s often described as a “death penalty sanction” for someone unwilling to comply with court orders.

Reeves told the Austin American-Statesman last month that a default judgment against his client would be a “hugely excessive” response by Gamble and asked the judge for two weeks to wade through 75,000 pages of documents.

“I need to give him full and complete answers,” Reeves said. “That’s what I’m trying to do.”

In this week’s rulings, Gamble said Jones showed a “general bad faith approach to litigation” that was supported by “Mr. Jones’ public threats and Mr. Jones’ professed belief that these proceedings are ‘show trials.’ ”

“The Court finds that Defendants’ failure to comply … is greatly aggravated by [their] consistent pattern of discovery abuse throughout similar cases pending before this Court,” Gamble wrote. “The Court finds that Defendants’ discovery conduct in this case is the result of flagrant bad faith and callous disregard for the responsibilities of discovery under the rules.”

A jury is expected to decide the amount Jones owes the families in the two lawsuits.

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones claims to have been beset by a mysterious medical condition days before he was scheduled for a deposition in a lawsuit over his false claims about the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre.

But lawyers for the victims’ families suing Jones are suspicious about his claim that he’s now too sick to sit for the deposition, pointing out that Jones managed to host his InfoWars show for hours while he was supposedly receiving emergency care from a doctor.

On this week’s episode of The Daily Beast’s Fever Dreams podcast, hosts Asawin Suebsaeng and Will Sommer discussed the InfoWars boss’s sudden new illness.

“This is the kind of surprise tactic that he might use to avoid the deposition,” Sommer said.

The lawyer was just told that they're personally on shaky ground.

A lawyer for Jones provided the court with a doctor’s note claiming Jones was recovering from home. But Jones was still able to record his four-hour show, apparently from his studio, on Monday afternoon—when he was supposedly under the doctor’s care. The lawyers noted that the only doctor he was near at the time, InfoWars guest and prominent ivermectin booster Dr. Ben Marble, didn’t appear to be treating Jones for anything.

On Tuesday, the judge in charge of the case raised the possibility that Jones’ lawyer “unknowingly misled” the court, and demanded to know whether Jones recorded the Monday broadcast from his studio or his home.

In response, doctors representing Jones have claimed he’s too sick to be deposed, citing an unnamed illness that didn’t prevent Jones from hosting episodes of his hours-long conspiracy theory show this week.

After Jones skipped the first scheduled deposition on Wednesday, lawyers for the plaintiffs asked Connecticut Judge Barbara N. Bellis to issue a warrant for his arrest to force him to participate in the deposition. In response, Bellis ordered Jones to appear Thursday at the deposition or face potential court action. Now that Jones has skipped that second deposition, the judge is expected to take action against him as soon as later on Thursday.

“Mr. Jones cannot unilaterally decide to continue to engage in his broadcasts, but refuse to participate in a deposition,” Bellis wrote in the Wednesday order demanding that he appear.

Bellis already ruled last year that Jones had defaulted in the case, taking the rare step of declaring that he had lost the case before it reached trial because of his violations of legal procedure. As the judge now tries to determine what damages Jones and InfoWars will have to pay to the Sandy Hook families for his allegations that the shooting was a false-flag, Bellis could escalate the punishments, including issuing the arrest warrant.

In a court motion filed Wednesday in Texas, the families claim that he has concealed InfoWars’ assets to make the company appear to be nearly bankrupt. The families were joined in the motion by another man suing Jones for falsely accusing him of carrying out the 2018 Parkland shooting. The filing was first posted online by Courthouse News.

InfoWars didn’t respond to a request for comment.

On paper, InfoWars parent company Free Speech Systems seems to lose money every year. Yet Jones has allegedly transferred significant amounts out of the company—financial transactions that often coincide with legal setbacks Jones has faced in the Sandy Hook cases. After the families sued him in 2018, for example, Jones allegedly started personally withdrawing a total of $18 million from the Free Speech Systems bank account over three years, along with drawing an annual $600,000 salary.

Many of the suspicious transfers center on a mysterious company called PQPR, which the plaintiffs claim is controlled by Jones and his family members. Shortly after Jones lost his last appeal to block the defamation cases in Texas, PQPR claimed that Free Speech Systems owed it $54 million—almost all of InfoWars’ assets.

Still, Jones and InfoWars loom large over American politics. From Donald Trump to Marjorie Taylor Greene to the wave of library censorship and anti-trans laws around the country, Jones’ political approach — theatrical proclamations that everything is a conspiracy and the devil is pushing a globalist agenda — now defines the Republican Party.

So while Jones weathers the legal turbulence, likely aided by an alleged network of shell companies stashing his extensive revenue from cure-alls and survival meals, the media ecosystem he helped create is thriving.

“What he set out to create and put into motion will likely continue well past his personal involvement,” said Jared Holt, a resident fellow at Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab whose reporting on Jones played an outsized role in major companies like Apple and Spotify removing Jones from their platforms.

In other words, Jones’ success as the leader of the fringe spurred its own booming market: A mob of red-faced liars, profiting off of America’s deep well of suspicion and fear.

The embrace of his insanity, stupidity, and fascist propaganda launched a lot of careers, so much so that he even received on-air praise from none other than Tuckums himself.

Trump’s campaign strategy followed Jones’ example, banking on lies about Barack Obama’s citizenship and other racist conspiracies, like Trump’s claim that he saw “thousands” of people cheering on Sept. 11, 2001, in areas of New Jersey “where you have large Arab populations.”

After Trump’s 2016 victory, Jones claimed to have received a thankful call from the president-elect, just before Trump parroted an InfoWars article claiming “millions” of illegal votes had been cast for Hillary Clinton.

But Jones’ alliance with Trump came at a cost: He was no longer an outsider. His conspiracy theories were being repeated by a president, and, among America’s right wing, were becoming increasingly mainstream.

“Trump represents Alex losing some of his autonomy,” said Dan Friesen, a longtime Jones observer and co-host of the Knowledge Fight podcast. “Once you’ve latched yourself onto the person who did win, now all of your time is going to be taken up with coming up with explanations for why the thing you pretended was going to happen isn’t happening. The biggest imitators aren’t confined to the fringe: Tucker Carlson hosts one of the most popular shows on cable, where, on many nights, he does little more than launder conspiracy theories. Last December, Carlson praised Jones on Fox News’ air, calling him “a far better guide to reality in recent years” than the mainstream media journalists like NBC’s Ken Dilanian or CBS’ Margaret Brennan.

He would have skated through all of that...even the high profile divorce...had he not claimed that either the kids didn't exist or that it was all done by crisis actors.  He didn't even need to continue that line of attack once it became clear that there was no action being taken to reduce access to the kind of weapons the guy used.

Infowars Bankruptcy Looks A Lot Like Alex Jones Trying To Dodge Sandy Hook Fallout, Legal Experts Say

InfoWars, a media outlet owned by far-right conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, and two other companies owned by Jones have filed for bankruptcy. This all comes after Jones lost three defamation lawsuits to the families of the Sandy Hook shooting victims.

But legal experts tell TPM that while the filing is bankruptcy on its face, it could all be part of an effort to delay accountability and reduce the amount he’ll have to pay the families in damages.

Infowars, Infowars Health and Prison Planet TV all filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Sunday in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas. Each company has estimated liabilities of up to $10 million, the businesses said in the court filings. Chapter 11 filings typically put a pause on pending civil litigation and allow companies to continue operations as normal as they work on a plan to reorganize.

The bankruptcy filings claim that Jones’ businesses’ “financial distress stems primarily” from the lawsuits that the families of several of the victims who were killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre had filed against Jones — after he falsely claimed the shooting was a “hoax.” Jones’ lies prompted a wave of harassment and death threats against the grieving families.

Jones has shelled out $10 million in legal costs in the Sandy Hook lawsuits (two of which are in Texas, the other in Connecticut), according to the bankruptcy filings (embedded below).

He's likely trying to only give in on cash and keep his "intellectual" property.

Under the proposal, Jones would put in $2,725,000, plus $250,000 per quarter for 20 consecutive quarters, and that’s where the families will get the money — offering a plan that the filing argues won’t leave anyone out.

It’s a solution framed as one in everyone’s best interest, but legal experts tell TPM the whole thing smells a lot like a ploy by Jones to control, or at least add extra hurdles to, how much money he’ll have to give the families.

“It’s almost like it’s a one-sided settlement offer to the [families] as a body,” Stephen Sather, bankruptcy lawyer at Barron & Newburger based in Austin, told TPM in a phone interview on Monday.

Sather said he interprets the maneuver as Jones trying to make sure that he gets to keep his intellectual property rights out of the plaintiffs’ hands — to ensure he stays on the air after the dust settles.

Jones’ offer to the families seems to be “If you let my IP stay intact, then we will make sure you receive these funds,” Sather said, referring to the trust.

And as so often happens in lawsuits with people who have money...

Jones’ strategy seems to be to set the limits of what the families will get from him and to “create confusion” with the bankruptcy filings, said Bruce Markell, a bankruptcy law professor at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law.

“The whole point is to drag out the process and wear down the plaintiffs into agreeing to whatever he wants to give them,” Markell told TPM over the phone on Monday.

Put more bluntly, the endgame is to “force the plaintiffs to accept whatever table scraps Jones left in the companies’ coffers,” attorney Liz Dye wrote in her analysis of the case in Above the Law, where she frequently blogs about the many legal woes of Trump and his cronies, including Jones.

Disinformation peddler, human tomato, and InfoWars host Alex Jones has an anonymous benefactor shoveling millions of dollars of bitcoin into his crypto wallet. The windfall comes on the cusp of a financial disaster for Jones: he’ll soon know just how much he’ll be liable for after losing multiple defamation lawsuits over his lies that the children killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 weren’t real.

The Southern Poverty Law Center’s Hatewatch reported Thursday that Jones has an unknown crypto millionaire sitting in his corner. The donor supplied Jones 206 bitcoin worth over $5 million May 19 and 52 bitcoin worth around $2 million in April, all from a single crypto wallet.

The money landed in Jones’ coffers after a “tearjerker” episode of his InfoWars podcast May 18 that saw the host pleading for more crypto donations “to prosecute a war” against “the enemy.” Jones often gets support from people who try to remain anonymous, including some web advertising services.

The donation comes on the heels of Jones’ multiple losses in the defamation cases brought by parents of Sandy Hook victims. Lawyers for the Sandy Hook families said in court filings that the InfoWars mouthpiece was trying to hide his company’s assets through shell companies and by filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which shields companies from civil lawsuits. Jones will not enjoy such protection, however: federal bankruptcy Judge Julia Manning dropped all three of Jones’ businesses from bankruptcy protection.

Whoever this individual or group is donating to Jones, they don’t seem to mind flushing more cash down the toilet (AKA, Jones’ mouth). The price of bitcoin hit a peak in April but has since declined precipitously. It’s now trading at its lowest rates since late 2020.

Oh, yeah. And he's still a waste of human skin and organs.

Though he’s been humbled by the parents of a previous school shooting, Jones doesn’t seem to be learning from his mistakes. The most recent school massacre in Uvalde, Texas has spawned numerous conspiracy theories, and Jones has taken them up with fervor, as has Arizona Republican Representative Paul Gosar. Jones’ most recent episode of InfoWars May 24 included him hinting to his audience that the latest shooting might be staged.

“It’s very opportunistic what’s happening,” Jones said.

Alex is going full on right-wing as he continues to refuse to take responsibility for his own words and actions. Instead he's blaming everything on his legal team. Scapegoating is a conservative principle anymore.

InfoWars conspiracy theorist Alex Jones could soon sue his own lawyers, as Jones and his company scramble to blame someone else for their legal failures in lawsuits over their lies about the Sandy Hook school shooting.

Jones and InfoWars have consistently lost in courtrooms across the country to families of the school-shooting victims who have filed suits over Jones’s claims that the massacre was a false flag. Last year, judges in Connecticut and Texas took the unusual steps of ruling Jones and InfoWars in default over trial, effectively declaring that they had already lost the cases as punishment for their many failures to follow legal procedure.

But the public shamings haven’t stopped InfoWars from floating the possibility that someone else is at fault for all their legal maladies. Namely, their frequently rotating members of their legal team.

In a February deposition obtained by The Daily Beast, a representative of InfoWars’ parent company said the conspiracy-theory outlet was discussing the idea of suing Jones’s former lawyers for legal malpractice.

“I did have concerns on behalf of the company regarding the company’s prior representation, yes,” Brittany Paz, a lawyer acting as a representative for the company, said.

The possibility that Jones will sue his own lawyers struck Mark Bankston, an attorney representing Sandy Hook families in a Texas case, as odd.

“It’s unusual to see a defendant turn on his lawyers in the midst of litigation, but it certainly fits the pattern of Mr. Jones blaming everyone else for his problems,” Bankston told The Daily Beast in an email.
