The pro-Trump internet went wild on Wednesday for the Freedom Phone, a $500 smartphone that comes stocked with conservative apps and promises to liberate anyone else who buys it from Silicon Valley censorship. The American flag-branded phone was immediately promoted by a wide range of right-wing figures, including former Trump adviser Roger Stone, Jan. 6 rally organizer Ali Alexander, and pundit Dinesh D’Souza.

“I’m holding a freaking phone that is not controlled by Apple or Google,” conservative personality Candace Owens told her fans in an Instagram video. “We made the switch immediately.”

Despite being lauded by some of the right-wing media’s leading figures, though, the Freedom Phone’s buyers could be getting less than they expect for its $500 price tag. That’s because the Freedom Phone appears to be merely a more expensive rebranding of a budget Chinese phone available elsewhere for a fraction of the Freedom Phone’s price.

I know diddly squat about product liability law, but this seems ripe for a lot of lawsuits. Ah, well, I suppose they will just start a GoFundMe campaign.

I'm not sure there is one either because I know so little about what this phone really is and does. If it is just a marketing ploy and is basically just a standard rebranded phone sold at a giant markup to rubes, then probably not. On the other hand, if it has included customized software and apps that are preloaded or available through some sort of 'app store' and those apps aren't vetted or supervised in any way for, you know, 'freedom' reasons then that liability landscape may be quite different. Black Rifle Coffee, a veteran-founded firm that became a darling of the conservative right with self-conscious pro-firearm, pro-military and pro-police branding — as well as an "anti-hipster" message — produces blends like "Silencer Smooth roast" and "AK-47 espresso," earning plaudits over the years from all manner of far-right characters.

But during the past year, their logo has been pictured on insurrectionists who invaded the U.S. Capitol building, worn by Kyle Rittenhouse, the Illinois teenager who killed two Black Lives Matter protesters in Wisconsin last summer, and as a recurring theme at nearly every anti-lockdown, anti-mask and anti-vaccine protest during the pandemic.

In the New York Times piece, titled "Can the Black Rifle Coffee Company Become the Starbucks of the Right?" the founders of the company attempted to distance themselves from the extremists who have in recent years co-opted the company's logo and message, and worn it in all manner of situations that they found concerning.

"How do you build a cool, kind of irreverent, pro-Second Amendment, pro-America brand in the MAGA era without doubling down on the MAGA movement and also not being called a [expletive] RINO by the MAGA guys?" Evan Hafer, one of Black Rifle's founders, asked the Times.

"I would never want my brand to be represented in that way, shape or form," Hafer added, "because that's not me."

In particular, Hafer used the interview to denounce the Proud Boys and other violent white nationalist groups that he says "hijacked" the brand's imagery.

"The racism [expletive] really pisses me off," Hafer said. "I hate racist, Proud Boy-ish people. Like, I'll pay them to leave my customer base. I would gladly chop all of those people out of my [expletive] customer database and pay them to get the [expletive] out."

This did not earn many fans among the far-right pundits who had reliably hawked the company's products over the years.

"How to destroy your company in one easy step: give an interview to the New York Times trashing your customers," Raheem Kassam, editor in chief at the right-wing outlet, The National Pulse, wrote on Twitter.

"It looks like Black Rifle Coffee, a company which became famous because of conservatives, is now trying to distance themselves from conservatives," Brigitte Gabriel, founder of the influential conservative group ACT for America, tweeted. "I never tried their products before and it looks like I never will."

Mike Cernovich, the conspiracist who championed the widely debunked pizzagate theory, said the company was "taking a knee" by agreeing to the interview. Specifically, he highlighted a passage about how the company passed over a new logo that featured St. Michael the archangel— a patron saint of military personnel that the Pentagon also considers a white supremacist symbol.

This was a theme among conservatives denouncing the company, many of whom think that Black Rifle's spurning of the Christian iconography amounted to "wokeness" or "political correctness."

According to the Orange County Register, Gaetz and Greene held a “Free Speech Peaceful Protest” outside the Riverside City Hall following three cancelations from California venues in light of the lawmakers’ history of incendiary remarks.

On Saturday afternoon, the M3 Live Anaheim Event Center canceled on Gaetz and Greene hours before their event was scheduled to begin — a move that happened after two other venues, the Pacific Hills Banquet & Event Center in Laguna Hills and the Riverside Convention Center, backed out of hosting the lawmakers’ events after owners of the venues received backlash for hosting the event.

The Register reported that Greene and Gaetz decried the cancelations by painting themselves as victims of “cancel culture.”

“And here’s what we’re going to do, America. You’ve got two members of Congress right here and we refuse to be canceled because we won’t let you be canceled,” Greene said, according to the Register.

Gaetz similarly griped over the cancelations to a crowd of more than 100 people, saying that he wants to fight back.

Lyster added that the city has “concerns about the nature of the event” and that it does not reflect “the values we share.”

“We as a city shared our public safety concerns with the operator and the operator shares the concerns,” Lyster said, the Register reported.

And Anaheim is home to Disneyland.  It is accustomed to dealing with large crowds, but not to crowds that will start fights with counter protesters (or vice versa). When it comes to MAGA marketing there's always somebody with even less decency ready to make a buck.

Two coffee companies are currently competing for a pool of politically motivated customers, with each company trying to prove that they provide the Trumpiest, most aggressively MAGA coffee experience in the entire United States.

No, it’s not Starbucks and Caribou. It’s Black Rifle Coffee and Stocking Mill Coffee.

And one of them has already gotten in trouble with some of its fan base for crossing a group of Trump-worshipping, far-right extremists.

“The difficulty [Black Rifle Coffee is] in right now is they’ve spent several years kind of appealing to the worst attitudes, particularly in the American man… One of their initial things was they sold… range targets with hipsters on them,” Will Sommer, co-host of The Daily Beast’s Fever Dreams podcast, says on this week’s episode. “Kyle Rittenhouse wore one of their shirts and they had to distance themselves, and then of course that angered their fan base. And then most notably, one of the premier Capitol rioters was wearing a Black Rifle Coffee hat.”

Things only got worse for Black Rifle Coffee when its founders denounced the Proud Boys in a New York Times profile published earlier this month, leaving an opening for Stocking Mill—which has a slogan of “Arrive Violently”—to outflank them from the right. This led to former Black Rifle drinkers announcing that they’d punish the company, for instance, by setting their Black Rifle clothing on fire.

“I love how Black Rifle Coffee is this perfect little metaphor for what has happened to the Republican Party over the past four years,” fellow Fever Dreams host Asawin Suebsaeng says. “It’s like, ‘Oh, we spent all this time cuddling up to the worst elements in the conservative base and the Republican Party, and now we’re stunned to see that we’ve gotten some blowback.’”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) disturbed critics Tuesday when she burst into laughter during a reporter’s question about coronavirus deaths and her role in keeping constituents safe.

Greene held a press conference after she was suspended from Twitter for 12 hours for spreading COVID-19 misinformation. In tweets on Sunday and Monday, she falsely claimed that COVID-19 is not dangerous for people unless they’re obese or over age 65 and said vaccines shouldn’t be required.

Many people under age 65 have become severely ill or died from the disease. Currently, 99% of COVID-19 deaths are among the unvaccinated.

“Do you feel any responsibility for keeping people in Georgia safe?” a reporter asked during the press conference. “There are children, skinny people, who have died of the coronavirus. Do you feel any responsibility?”

Greene laughed.

“Tia, you crack me up,” she said. “You know what, I think people’s responsibility is their own. To read the information ― and it’s everywhere. You can’t go by any street corner practically and not see something about COVID-19. I believe in people’s own individual responsibility to read, to find out and to make their own decision.”

The reporter, who later identified herself online as Tia Mitchell, Washington correspondent for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, followed up by asking the lawmaker if she believed in science.

“I believe in God. And of course, there is science,” Greene answered. “I don’t worship science or think that science rules everything. I believe that God rules everything.”

The Stupid Tour is costing Gaetz & Taylor-Greene gang more than their grifting.

At the height of the controversy surrounding Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and the revelations that he’s under investigation for sex trafficking, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) bet big on a nationwide joint fundraising tour with her embattled colleague. But new campaign filings show that not only did the gamble not pay off, but that the much-maligned Republicans actually spent four times as much as they raised.

Greene, the House GOP’s top fundraiser, is now faced with a decision: She can continue to join forces with her beleaguered ally at the expense of her campaign war chest, or she can cut bait and let Gaetz fend for himself.

Since Gaetz and Greene kicked off their joint fundraising committee with a May 7 event at The Villages in central Florida, their campaigns and joint fundraising committee have posted a combined loss of $342,000. And according to recent filings with the Federal Election Commission, that joint fundraising effort, “Put America First,” reported only $59,345.54 in contributions.

That sort of meager haul would be fine for a dinner or one-time event, but Gaetz and Greene have repeatedly held high-profile events and spent a whopping $287,036.19 to hold them—meaning they’re in the hole by more than $225,000.

Both Gaetz and Greene contributed $150,000 apiece from their own campaigns to the joint fundraising committee. And they’ve raised money almost entirely from small-dollar donors. Only four people gave $500 or more to the shared committee. But their campaign tour of some of the most Trump-friendly areas in the nation has been inordinately expensive.

In fact, the big winner from the Gaetz and Greene barnstorming appears to be Gaetz’s PR firm.

The Logan Circle Group, which the campaign hired in early April, made off with more than a million dollars in the second quarter of 2021. While the majority of that money came from Gaetz—$825,000 over the course of one month—the firm nudged past the million-dollar mark with the $250,000 it received from Put America First. Those payments, nearly 90 percent of the committee’s total budget, were for “event production and management,” according to FEC filings.

A Gaetz campaign spokesperson told The Daily Beast that all donations raised on the tour had gone to Put America First. Asked again if that was correct, the spokesperson said it was. Upon double-checking with the campaign’s finance team, the spokesperson would only say that, “Our filings speak for themselves.”

But if the filings speak for themselves, then they’re not saying many good things.

It took years for David Frum to break and admit the reality of the Republican Party. There are still those who can't. Whenever they can stomach criticizing the right they pathologically have to head for the "both sides are to blame" trope. Here's Meghan McCain, a classic case of name recognition welfare, desperately clawing to equate McCarthy and Pelosi. It's beyond pathetic. Unfortunately she's not the only one.

McCain said that she thinks both sides are bad and attacked Pelosi for refusing to "play ball" with McCarthy. At the same time, McCarthy is blaming Pelosi for the attack on the Capitol, telling Fox News Wednesday night that she may have had some kind of death wish.

She also said that McCarthy should have acted in good faith, but he hasn't thus far in the process, leading many to assume he won't now either.

"I think they're all bad and why Americans are so disgusted and overwhelmed with the vast majority of what happens on Capitol Hill," McCain said, throwing all members in the same bucket. She went on to cite polls that say Congress is the worst it's ever been, which is a frequent poll number. Americans often complain about Congress, but then approve of their individual members.

"I think part of the problem is, you know, Nancy Pelosi better start getting something done with the other side, because her time in power is coming to an end fast and furiously," McCain ranted. "More than likely I would bet literally my life on it that Republicans are going to take over Congress in the midterms and Kevin McCarthy's the new speaker. These two have to learn how to work together. Republicans and Democrats have to learn to live together."

It's the same position President Joe Biden has taken, only to be slapped down over and over again by Republicans unwilling to work with him.

I'd say that the position Biden has taken is a bit different. He has given them the option to work together but he's more of a realist. Looking at the COVID relief bill and the handling of the infrastructure bill it looks like a case of "here's your chance but you're not going to use it to block our agenda." Pelosi did the same with her willingness to give in to every one of the House Republicans' demands for an independent investigation. Did she assume that McCarthy was playing the same old Republican games and that giving in wouldn't mean a thing? Maybe. She's politically savvy and a lot smarter than Kevin. But that doesn't really matter. The offer was on the table and Republicans swatted it aside. At this point they're relegated to whining.

At each turn the Democrats have given the Republicans an opportunity to work together. At each turn the Republicans have engaged in their predictable little play acting for the base. But unlike before the Democratic leadership doesn't give the Republican words about bipartisanship a shred of credibility. The boys who cried wolf now have to put up or be ignored. Good. Should have happened a long time ago.

The sad thing is that Democrats ignoring the Republicans' subterfuge and falsity won't add up to Democrats getting more votes. It certainly won't move those who identify themselves as Republicans to even consider voting for a Democrat. I learned that in the Obamacare debate years "discussing" with old friends about how Republicans really were included in the formation of the bill. They never believed it. The modern Republicans are no better and are probably more disinclined to believe it.

Bill’s final semester at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, was already difficult enough.

He was part of the final graduating class of survivors of the 2018 shooting, and they all had just marked the third anniversary of the day 17 people were killed, nine of whom were Bill’s classmates.

But Bill also had to deal with his father’s daily accusations that the shooting was a hoax and that the shooter, Bill, and all his classmates were paid pawns in a grand conspiracy orchestrated by some shadowy force.

Bill had worked hard to get over his survivor’s guilt after the shooting, but for the past five months, his own father has been triggering it all over again.

“He'll say stuff like this straight to my face whenever he's drinking: ‘You're a real piece of work to be able to sit here and act like nothing ever happened if it wasn't a hoax. Shame on you for being part of it and putting your family through it too,” Bill said in an anonymous post on Reddit last week.’

Bill first posted his story on QAnon Casualties, a Reddit thread dedicated to helping family members and friends of QAnon believers.

VICE News spoke to the poster and confirmed the author’s claims about being a survivor of the school shooting. Bill is not the student’s real name as they only spoke to VICE News on the condition of anonymity, citing concerns about attacks from members of QAnon forums if his identity was revealed.

As is true for many who fell down the QAnon rabbit hole in recent years, Bill’s dad’s descent coincided with the pandemic.

The Republican Party didn't just become the Party of Trump in its rhetoric and defense of him and his MAGAt brownshirts. Now they've picked up his grifting techniques in fundraising. Sheep gots to be sheared.

As the Republican National Committee ramps up its fundraising operation for the midterm elections, the GOP group is reviving some of its shadiest tactics—and taking them a step further.

Just this week, the RNC sent out text messages and emails to Republican supporters alerting them that their “payment status” was “incomplete,” seeming to masquerade a fundraising request as an unpaid bill. And emails on Monday from the RNC draw on the same theme, using the words “FINAL NOTICE” in the header to implore donors to activate a “lifetime membership.”

The RNC doesn’t bother explaining what a “lifetime membership” actually means.

Other solicitations claim that a “250% impact offer” is “exclusive to YOU,” while not clarifying what an “impact offer” is, or explaining how the implied 250 percent matching donation would be paid. (That ploy, which Democrats also routinely use, is reportedly under Justice Department review.) And other emails falsely suggest that contributions to the RNC will support Trump’s recent lawsuit against social media companies, even though the RNC plays no role in that litigation.

“Taken all together, these are the kinds of predatory tactics you only see in the scammiest models,” Jordan Libowitz, the communications director for government watchdog Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), said.
