There will be 4 going on to the general election.  The thought is that the base could prevail with one, maybe two candidates, but that others will garner enough votes to end up in the final 4.  Now if the base comes up with 4 base candidates and ice out more moderate Republicans from even running, then the base could prevail.

And yes the base candidate could still win the general.

The top 4 vote getters advance to the general election.  I guess if the primary has only real base supported members of a particular party running, then the base can prevail.  The thought is that a moderate could get enough votes to end up in the general.

American Bridge, a Democratic opposition group, is going on the offensive with a campaign against pro-Trump Republicans’ push to take over state and local government offices that oversee elections.

• American Bridge is launching a $10 million superPAC to take down GOP candidates in those races who promote Trump’s lies about the 2020 election. The group is called Bridge to Democracy.

• The campaign, which has already hired 22 researchers, won’t just focus on big races like secretary of state, the New York Times reports. It’s also targeting more under-the-radar election administration roles like county boards of supervisors or boards of canvassers.

• The campaign is targeting elections in 12 states: Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin.

Senator Snowball is finally retiring at age 87.

Sen. Jim Inhofe is expected to announce his retirement in the coming days, according to a person familiar with his plans, likely triggering a special election to replace him this fall.

The 87-year-old Oklahoma Republican was elected to another six-year term in 2020, but has missed more votes than usual recently and told reporters in December his wife has been sick. His decision to step down will surely fuel a competitive Republican primary to succeed him in ruby-red Oklahoma.

Inhofe is expected to serve the remainder of the current Congress and to announce his retirement on Monday. He’s a longtime top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee.

GOP senators are expected to try and talk Inhofe out of leaving office early, according to the person familiar with Inhofe’s plans. Inhofe planned to reveal his intentions in a video announcement, but news reports of his potential retirement preempted its release, according to one GOP source familiar with the matter. Another GOP source said the announcement has been moved up and is expected to come as early as Friday.

A spokesperson for the senator did not respond to a request for comment. The New York Times was the first to report Inhofe might resign early.

By announcing before March 1, Inhofe will trigger an election this year to replace him. But he intends to stay in his seat until next January, avoiding the need for an interim appointment to fill his seat temporarily.

Several days before Tuesday’s primary election, some right-wing websites reported on an interview with Tania Joya, who said she had an affair with Taylor that lasted from October 2020 to June 2021. Joya, of the Dallas suburb of Plano, told The Dallas Morning News on Monday night that she had met the congressman through her work as an ex-jihadist helping to reprogram extremists.

Who knows what we'll see but it appears that sane, reasonably well liked Republicans are turning down the opportunity to run for Senate seats and that could be a risk to Republicans hoping to gain control. Gov. Chris Sununu of NH basically said he had no interest in just blocking up everything possible. The AP calls these "unforced errors" by the party.

As the prospect of a red wave grows, a series of Republican missteps including recruiting stumbles, weak fundraising and intense infighting is threatening the GOP’s path to the Senate majority.

Arizona’s Republican Gov. Doug Ducey dealt his party its latest setback late last week by announcing he would not challenge Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly this fall. His decision, which leaves no obvious front-runner in a crowded Republican primary, disappointed Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell and his allies who had spent months privately encouraging Ducey to run.

But the GOP’s shortcomings extend well beyond Arizona.

Republican candidates in Arizona, Georgia and Nevada are struggling to keep pace with Democratic fundraising. Recruiting failures have dashed GOP hopes in reach states like Maryland and threaten a prime pickup opportunity in New Hampshire. And a recent plan that would raise taxes on low-income Americans and seniors, released by the Republican Senate midterm chief, Florida Sen. Rick Scott, is putting GOP candidates in a difficult position across states like Wisconsin, Ohio and Florida.

The challenges amount to an early warning sign for Republicans less than two months before the opening Senate primaries of the 2022 election season. With Democrats confronting historic headwinds and the weight of an unpopular president, a Republican Senate majority is easily within reach. But, sensing discord within the GOP, Democrats are suddenly optimistic they may have a path to hold — or even expand — their majority.

Rep. Val Demings, the leading Democrat in the race to unseat Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, acknowledged that her party has struggled to highlight its accomplishments — including sweeping coronavirus pandemic relief and a massive infrastructure package — in the face of President Joe Biden’s political woes. But she seized on Scott’s plan as a clear contrast for how Democrats and Republicans would govern differently.

“This plan is toxic. It would hurt working families. It would hurt seniors. And Rubio’s going to own it,” Demings said in an interview.

Josh Marshall questions the premise that these are unforced errors versus just what the Republican Party has become. We all know that primaries can tend to favor the more extreme elements of a party. Since most of the GOP is now extreme I wouldn't expect the sane to perform very well.

The AP has a new story about how unforced errors are potentially getting in the way of the GOP’s path back to a Senate majority in 2022. Most of us are aware of the developments the piece is referring to. You can review them here. I don’t want to get too deeply into the ins and outs of how bad this is for the GOP, whether it’s enough of a problem to keep the Democrats in power. But we know that in general this is a very real dynamic. Democrats managed to hold on to the Senate in 2010 in what was otherwise a brutal midterm rout. It happened again in 2012 – even though Democrats had to defend a ton of marginal pickups from the 2006 cycle. The dynamic is clear cut enough that it’s worth asking whether this is really a matter of ‘unforced’ errors or whether this is what politics is like when politicians run in non-gerrymandered districts (i.e., states).

Now, there’s a good argument that the electoral college and the states that make up the Senate are already gerrymandered very effectively to privilege a number of small population rural states. That’s true. But that’s not the same as the every decade fine-tuning that the House gets.

Even pretty conservative states still have a lot of voters who aren’t diehard conservatives. They may not be Democrats. But they’re not full Trump. There’s another dynamic. Midterm elections feed into a kind of oppositionism that is a tight fit for the revanchist elements in the GOP.

In any case, it’s probably worth considering if these are really unforced errors or if there’s something more structural at play.

Oh you Pennsylvanians!  You have another candidate for governor.

Pennsylvania State Senator and retired colonel Doug Mastriano has announced his candidacy for governor. And, in keeping with his participation in the Jericho March movement, the Stop the Steal Rally on January 6th, and other appearances at Christian Nationalist events, he kicked off his candidacy blowing a shofar and wearing a tallit. Mastriano’s political fortunes have risen specifically due to his links to Trump and efforts to overturn the 2020 election, but he’s also long been tied to extremist groups. And unfortunately, neither the media nor conservative voters appear to view him as a fringe candidate, as he has a reasonable shot of winning the GOP nomination. An early February poll by the Trafalgar Group, for example, had him in second place with 19.9% of voters—about 4% behind Lou Barletta, with 29% of voters still undecided.

While his participation in nationwide Christian Nationalist groups, and their attempts to overturn the election—he was subpoenaed by the January 6th committee for his plan to send pro-Trump electors to Congress—matter deeply, it’s also important to note that his ties to these groups date back much further than Trump and The Big Lie. One local Pennsylvania Q-affiliated religious group that Mastriano has repeatedly engaged with—with expansionist tendencies and both national and international interests—is “Rod of Iron Ministries.”

Rod of Iron Ministries is a schismatic offshoot of the Unification Church, often called the “Moonies,” led by Hyung Jin “Sean” Moon—son of the Unification Church’s late founder, Sun Myung Moon—who reorganized his ministry around a particular scriptural interpretation: that the “rod of iron” in Psalm 2:9 and Revelation 2:26 is, in fact, the AR-15.

We posted about these "Rod of Iron Church" clowns at the old TRS. If you really want and eyeful just do an image search of "rod of iron church" and you'll see just how whacked these guys really are. They're based in Newfoundland, PA which is less than 2 hours from me. Oh, joy. Here's an article about them opening a new center for whackjobs in Tennessee. All I can say is that I'm not in the least bit surprised they view TN as a good fit.

"That’s what is disturbing is, ‘is Tennessee presenting itself as welcoming towards this?' And if so, that’s not a good thing," she said.

Bridges Johns said she is aware of similar groups in Tennessee, some of which are in her area, but only recently learned of Rod of Iron. Compared to the other groups, her impression of Rod of Iron was "very bizarre and scary."

"This was a pretty new level, to be honest," Bridges Johns said. "Especially in terms of the mixing of religion, politics, violence, guns and all of these imagery that goes along with that."

Think about it.” The statement, which does not prove the theory of evolution false, nonetheless landed well among the congregation. “Now you’re getting too smart for us, Herschel,” the church’s pastor said. Walker doubled down on his damnation of science, falsely arguing that science alone cannot be responsible for the creation of a baby. “They’re still trying to do that, but they can’t, because there has to be a God,” he said. Walker is the GOP frontrunner to compete against Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) in November.

He's following the playbook.  That fancy Black city pastor doesn't cut any ice with a lot of the folks Walker needs the votes of, people who need to be convinced Walker is one of them even if his skin is dark.

Why yes, an obsession with race and white supremacy really are core to the GOP. Notice the praise followed by the back-handed compliment from a top Ohio gubernatorial candidate who once read the work of fiction called "The Bell Curve."

Investment banker Mike Gibbons, a top Republican contender in the race for outgoing Sen. Rob Portman’s (R-OH) seat, made racist remarks about people of Asian descent during one of his podcasts in 2013, citing debunked conspiracy theories in a pseudoscientific book, the New York Times found.

“I’ve often thought that when I’ve run into Asians they’re all — you know, if you’ve ever read ‘The Bell Curve,’ it’s a book, a very controversial book, I can’t even remember who wrote, I think his name is Murray wrote this book — and it said that the smartest people in the world as far as measurable I.Q. were Ashkenazi Jews,” Gibbons said. “And then right below them was basically everybody in China, India and, you know, throughout the Asian countries.”

“The Bell Curve,” co-authored by political scientist Charles Murray and Richard Herrnstein, argues that intelligence is determined by race, and it has been widely criticized for its lack of any real scientific evidence and for laundering white supremacist ideology.

Gibbons also claimed in the podcast that one of his business school classes was made up of “mostly Asians.” He then boosted “model minority” stereotypes about his Asian classmates, saying he was impressed with how much they studied and thought they “were incredibly bright.”

“But they memorized formulas,” he said. “And when we ran into a word problem — and you know, I think this is a function of the educational track they put them on — they got lost in the weeds.”

When Gibbons’ co-host claimed Chinese people weren’t properly educated on critical thinking, the businessman said that “they’re very good at copying.”

The PA governor's race is a textbook example of just how far off the rails the Republic Party has gone. I swear that over the top "anti-wokeness" is 3-4 orders of magnitude worse than "wokeness" ever was. The upshot is that just being a decent human being is now a liability if you're in the GOP.

David McCormick, the leading candidate in Pennsylvania’s Republican Senate primary, claims he’s running to challenge “the weakness and wokeness that you see across the country.”

But as McCormick and his allies ramp up their culture-war crusade, it’s McCormick’s record as a former hedge-fund manager—and the inclusive policies he championed while leading his company—that could quickly become a political liability in a rabid GOP primary.

That record isn’t stopping a pro-McCormick super PAC from going after his Republican competition for their past support of transgender rights, however.

A recent attack ad against McCormick’s big rival—pop surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz—is spotlighting the talk-show host’s position on transgender issues, slamming him as a “Republican in Name Only” for engaging on the topic in the past.

The ad in question, called “Greatest Hits,” came from a pro-McCormick super PAC that wants viewers to believe Oz has a MAGA credibility gap—specifically when it comes to transgender issues. And it takes Oz to task for a show about raising transgender children that aired more than a decade ago.

The ad’s conceit is a review of “hit” records, where the “hits” are Oz’s previous positions. And the album cover that introduces the transgender TV segment is titled in the ad “TRANSGENDER KIDS.”

But the super PAC has picked a curious topic for a fight.

As the former CEO of the largest hedge fund in the world, Bridgewater Associates, McCormick boasted about his company’s inclusiveness, which extended to full paid coverage for gender transition surgery and earned a perfect score as an LGBTQ-friendly workplace. McCormick also wrote at length about Bridgewater’s diversity and inclusion programs more broadly, which he took credit for spearheading and nurturing.

Bridgewater’s website, which lists “the ability to be who you are” as one of its three “core values,” also showcased its diversity and inclusion programs, including transgender affirming groups. A dedicated diversity and inclusion team reported “directly to CEO David McCormick,” and in 2021 those issues became a “Top Strategic Priority.” (McCormick stepped down in January 2022.)

“Given our mission to have the deepest possible understanding of global economies, we seek to find, retain, and grow the best talent across gender identity, race and ethnicity, sexual orientation, gained experiences, and more,” reads Bridgewater’s “diversity and inclusion” landing page, archived from November 2020.

The diversity and inclusion page continues that Bridgewater has a “dedicated diversity and inclusion team reporting directly to CEO David McCormick, several affinity groups to empower our diverse communities, and a senior council charged with continuing to make Bridgewater a vibrant, inclusive community.”

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin told Newsmax on Monday that she was considering a bid to succeed the late Rep. Don Young (R-AK), who died on Friday.

Palin said she would say yes “in a heartbeat” if she were “asked” to fill Young’s seat. (Alaska will hold a special election to pick a temporary replacement, so Palin wouldn’t be asked to do anything. Does she know that?)

Voter fraud is the go to campaign rhetoric of Adam Laxalt in Nevada.

Nevadans still have 231 days until they head to the polls in November. But Adam Laxalt, the former attorney general of Nevada and a Republican candidate for Senate, is already laying detailed groundwork to fight election fraud in his race — long before a single vote has been cast or counted.

In conversations with voters at an event at his campaign headquarters this month, Laxalt explained how he’s vetting outside groups to help him establish election observer teams and map out a litigation strategy.

“I don’t talk about that, but we’re vetting which group we think is going to do better,” Laxalt told an attendee, according to an audio recording obtained by The New York Times from a person who attended the event and opposes Laxalt’s candidacy.
At the event, Laxalt criticized the 2020 Trump campaign and outside groups for their handling of election-fraud claims, saying that they went on the offensive too late. “In 2020, it was nothing,” he said, according to the audio recording. “And then the campaign was late and the party was late. So, it’s just different now. There’s a lot of groups that are saying there’s election fraud.”

So if he loses, he'll already have his team in place to litigate.

In it, he claimed that he has “not changed” his loyalty to the Big Lie — it’s just that he and Trump are at odds about how to keep the Big Lie alive and well.

In a statement issued through his Save America PAC on Wednesday morning, Trump accused Brooks of making a “horrible mistake” when he apparently “went woke” by daring to utter it was time to move on from the 2020 presidential election. At a MAGA rally in Alabama last year, Brooks urged voters to stop feeling “despondent” about 2020 and “look forward” to 2022 and 2024 — a remark that reportedly made Trump doubt his initial endorsement of Brooks.

“When I heard his statement, I said, ‘Mo, you just blew the Election, and there’s nothing you can do about it,’” Trump said in his statement.

The former president said that he was retracting his endorsement of Brooks “since he decided to go in another direction.”

But Brooks doth protest — the newly Trump-less GOP congressman denied that he is any less loyal to the Big Lie in a statement responding to Trump’s dumping.

Brooks declared Trump had somehow been “manipulated” by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) — despite the former president’s ongoing crusade to oust McConnell from leadership.

“It’s disappointing that, just like in 2017, President Trump lets Mitch McConnell manipulate him again,” Brooks said. “Every single negative TV ad against our campaign has come from McConnell and his allies. I wish President Trump wouldn’t fall for McConnell’s ploys, but, once again, he has.”

Brooks insists he has “not changed” and that he is committed to pushing falsehoods of widespread election fraud, reiterating his suggestion that the GOP should now turn its focus to 2022 and 2024 elections.

A group of voters is trying to get MTG disqualified from running.

A group of Georgia voters filed a bid on Thursday to get far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) disqualified from office for her role in fomenting the violent Jan. 6 Capitol attack.

The voters filed a complaint to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R) arguing that Greene is ineligible for office under Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment, which states that anyone who “engaged in insurrection” is disqualified from serving in Congress.

The filing, which was shared with TPM, included a full laundry list of Greene’s deep involvement in the events leading up to and during the Capitol attack, including her communications with the organizers of the Jan. 6 rally that preceded the attack, her repeatedly parroting ex-President Donald Trump’s lies that the 2020 election was stolen and her participation in Trump’s fake elector scheme.

The challenge against Greene’s candidacy is the second such challenge against a pro-Trump Republican who was intimately tied to the events of Jan. 6. A group of North Carolina voters has launched a similar effort to get Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) removed from the ballot in the November elections.

Both challenges in Georgia and North Carolina are being supported by Free Speech For People, a non-partisan constitutional law nonprofit.

During an interview with conservative host Jeremy Herrell, Greene referred to a lawsuit that aims to take her name off the ballot because she “voluntarily aided and engaged in an insurrection” on Jan. 6.

"I need people's support," Greene explained. "They're coming after me. They just filed a lawsuit against me last week to try to actually remove my name off the ballot! You talk about destroying democracy, these Democrats, they are seriously trying to destroy democracy by filing a lawsuit to remove my name off the ballot and taking away my district's ability to vote for me again."

"That is destroying democracy! And that is the most evil thing these people could do," she continued. "They're so arrogant. They want to take away my district's right to vote for me. That's how much they hate the people of my district and look down on them because they've tried to shame me in the media and make me into someone I'm not."

Greene went on to beg for donations "because I'm going to have to pay attorneys to fight for this."
