Palin is to be retested on Monday morning, to determine whether jury selection can begin later that day or the trial should be adjourned, likely until Feb. 3.

Whoopi Goldberg blasted HBO's Bill Maher after the increasingly right-moving comedian declared he doesn't want to live in pro-vaccine Americans' "masked paranoid world" anymore.

On Monday's "The View" Goldberg called Maher's remarks "not really funny to people who have lost their kids" or "family members or dear friends to this," she said, apparently meaning to COVID. (She obviously misspoke, saying the "vaccine.")

Maher on his HBO show on Friday had said, "I don't want to live in your paranoid world anymore, your masked paranoid world anymore, you know, you go out it's silly now. You know you have your mask, you have to have a card, you have the booster, they scan your head like you're a cashier and I'm a bunch of bananas. I'm not bananas you are."

Goldberg continued, saying, "listen, nobody on the planet really wants to go through this, this is not something we're doing because it's, you know, sexually gratifying. This is what we're doing to protect our families, and you don't have to do it, but stay away from everybody. The agency said it could reauthorize their use if they prove effective against other variants.

The American Medical Association’s president, Gerald E. Hamilton, praised the federal government for “following the scientific evidence and limiting the use of monoclonal antibody treatments to those that are effective against the omicron variant.”

The path of the COVID mutations is very interesting and more than a bit disconcerting. There's a lot more detail at the Twitter link.

THIS IS ONE OF the most interesting Twitter threads I’ve read in some time. I’m sure it’s gotten lots of discussion in specialist circles. But it hasn’t been much a part of the general news coverage of COVID. Basically new strains of the flu tend to evolve from recent dominant strains. So people build up an immunity to the Flu A that was big last year and Flu A evolves into Flu B that might get a lot of people sick two or three years in the future. But COVID isn’t working that way, at least not so far. Omicron didn’t evolve from Delta. And Delta didn’t evolve from the Alpha, Beta or Gamma lineages, says Adam Kucharski.

This isn’t just interesting for people focused on the hard science. It adds a potentially significant level of unpredictability to the future of the epidemic. This suggests that we can’t just look at Omicron and analyze what direction it might evolve in next. Each new variant seems to trace way back in the direction of the ancestral Wuhan version of COVID, if not all the way back to Wuhan itself. If the pattern holds, it suggests that the next big variant is off lurking somewhere totally out of view. Perhaps it’s in some isolated region or perhaps in an animal host population or perhaps in one chronically sick individual.

AS OF THIS MORNING the daily COVID case count (5,439) in New York City is barely more than 1/10th of the peak (47,559) it reached only about two and half weeks ago on January 8th. But that’s still more than three times the number the city was averaging at the beginning of December. The rest of the country appears to be following a similar trajectory albeit a week or two behind cities in the Northeast.

Wow I saw this in Lawyers, Guns, & Money from our old pal DC Sessions who sadly has had a hard time.  

Last week (the 17th) I ran out of platelets — a consequence of my treatment — and started bleeding from the eyes, mouth, skin — pretty much everywhere, internal and external. It was platelet transfusion or die PDQ. Except … Montana was out of platelets. Zero in the blood banks, zero in the queue. It seems that the current COVID surge was sucking up platelets for various reasons, pretty much all unvaccinated.

We were about to leave for an ER in Utah when the hospital called to tell us that my oncologist, by means best not questioned, had claimed a unit from Bozeman which was on the way by means I don’t like to consider given Montana winter roads. Anyway, the unit kept me going until they could dump some more into me in Utah, else I would have become one of those “COVID-related but not from CVID” mortalities.

Just in case anyone needs a verifiable example.

One and two COVID deniers died of COVID. The second was supposedly finally vaccinated. Color me skeptical.

He had spent the pandemic playing down the severity of the virus, dismissing it as the “moronavirus” and writing in a tweet in May 2020: “The fear of a supposedly deadly virus is nothing more than a little horror story designed to scare the population and make them accept slavery as they would a present from Father Christmas.” In a mournful statement, Bolsonaro described his mentor as “one of the greatest thinkers in our country’s history.”

Vachik Mangassarian, a veteran character actor known for his roles on NCIS, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., has died at the age of 78 from COVID-19 complications. Representatives for Mangassarian confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that he passed away in Burbank, California.

The Iran-born Armenian star moved to the U.S. at age 23 and landed his first Hollywood role in 1978. In the decades since, he held a slew of roles, starring as the architect Qasim Zaghlul in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and guest-starring on Curb Your Enthusiasm. More recently, he appeared on NCIS: Los Angeles and began work on his latest film, Moving On, where he had a supporting role in the Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin vehicle.

In the months before his death, Mangassarian had frequently expressed his opposition to COVID-19 vaccines and veered into truther territory, posting memes to Facebook that suggested the pandemic was part of a grand conspiracy.

In one post from September 2021, the actor posted a photo of a parody news report saying that “millions test positive for Sheeple 19.”

In another post a month later, he posted a photo of a billboard stating that “I am more afraid of a Democrat in the White House than I am of COVID-19.” In early November, he made his stance on vaccines clear with an image of President Joe Biden altered to show a syringe poking into his behind, along with the caption, “Here’s what you can do with my dose Joe Let’s Go Brandon.”

A representative for Mangassarian said the actor had initially been opposed to getting the coronavirus vaccine but ultimately did get vaccinated after it was required for film projects.

“I know about his original stance, but after I had a talk with him, his desire to work became more important to him,” Valerie McCaffery of McCaffery Talent Management told The Daily Beast.

Floriduh's quackiest of quacks state surgeon general is up for actual legislature approval of his appointment. As completely fact-free, conspiracy filled, and all-around awful as he is I'm sure he'll get Republican approval. After all, those characteristics make him their kinda' guy.

This one episode takes him from crank / charlatan into flaming, posturing asshole territory. Again, this is a big plus for Republicans.

Early misgivings about his suitability arose during a “get acquainted” visit to the Senate after his appointment in October. The senators Ladapo visited included Democrat Tina Polsky, who has a sign on her door asking all who enter to wear a mask. He and two men with him strode inside and stood in the waiting area with their faces uncovered.

Polsky asked Ladapo to put on a mask. He suggested there were alternatives such as going outside.

“I said, ‘No, I would like to sit here in my office where I have chairs and a comfortable setting, but I would like you to wear a mask,’” she recalled to The Daily Beast.

Ladapo balked and seemed to seek a debate.

“But I wouldn’t engage in it,” she remembered, “And it just went on and on.”

Polsky had particular cause for concern. She had recently undergone surgery for breast cancer and was about to begin a regimen of radiation that would be disrupted if she tested positive for COVID-19

“I said. ‘I have a serious medical condition’’’ she remembered. “He said, ‘We can talk about that.’ I said, ‘No.’ I kept backing up into my aide’s office because I was so uncomfortable. I had my mask on, of course.’”

Ladapo continued to refuse.

“I didn’t talk to him about any substantive issues because he wouldn’t put on a mask so I could sit down and have a conversation with him about his credentials,” she remembered.

She realized that he was likely just to go on and on.

“I said, ‘You can leave now, if you’re not going to wear a mask. I know everything I need to know about you and your role as the top medical professional in the state,’” she recalled.

Ladapo departed.

“The real kicker was when he left, my other aide was outside and heard him say something like, ‘I love to rile up those liberals,’” Polsky told The Daily Beast.

Not even all the GOP Legislators are on board with some of the most "out-there" stuff. The Butler County sheriff said his opinions on COVID-19 have changed.

In a recent Facebook live, Sheriff Richard Jones said as cases rise, people can't let COVID-19 fatigue get the best of them.

He said it's important to wash your hands often, stay away from large crowds and do your part to stop the spread.

"I know we all have fatigue, but we have to get through this and right now in Butler County, it's off the hook. My attitude has changed immensely. I've had three employees in the sheriff's office in the last few months die of COVID," Jones said.

Anti-Covid vaccine-ism is leading to general anti all vaccines.  Once people realize how many vaccinations are required before their children can go to school, instead of recognizing that this points to a fundamental problem with their freedom stances they double down and say no vaccines at all.  Note this is an opinion piece in the WaPo.

Early efforts to wade into allowing more choice on other vaccines had been quickly pulled back. In Tennessee, the state momentarily prevented its health department from communicating with children about any vaccines. In Florida, a prominent state senator suggested that his state might “review” those other vaccine requirements, before walking it back.

But GOP lawmakers in other states are increasingly moving in this direction.
In Georgia, a GOP state senator proposed a bill that would ban the state from requiring “proof of any vaccination of any person as a condition of providing any service or access to any facility.” The bill was endorsed by 17 state senators, about half of the Republican contingent in a chamber where you need less than 30 votes to pass something.

When it was pointed out that this could quite logically extend to vaccine requirements for the state’s public schools, state Sen. Jeff Mullis (R) said he planned to “adjust” the bill.

Efforts by Republicans in Wisconsin also have shown some real momentum. State Senate Health Committee Chairman Patrick Testin (R) held a hearing this month that included Senate Bill 336. The bill would, among other things, prohibit schools and universities from excluding students because of their vaccination status. And, again, it’s not just about coronavirus vaccines.

This has always been an undercurrent in California.  When a measles outbreak in 2015 led to a state senator proposing a bill to limit exemptions to vaccinations to a few specific reasons instead of for "personal reasons" he was assaulted by an anti-vaxxer outside the capitol building. Two years later an anti-vaxxer threw blood down onto the Senate floor from the visitor's gallery to protest a couple of bills increasing oversight into exemptions from childhood vaccinations.  Freedom has expanded to include the freedom to allow disease run through the population because a citizen doesn't care to be vaccinated.

On Wednesday, Book asked whether Ladapo regretted the way he had treated Polsky. Three times, Ladapo declined to directly answer. However, he said it’s “very important to respect people’s preferences.”

Book asked Ladapo five times whether vaccines are effective in stopping COVID-19 and gave the Harvard-educated doctor the option of answering “yes” or “no.”

Ladapo declined to answer that way. Instead, he said at various times that vaccines offer “reasonable effectiveness” and “relatively high effectiveness” against hospitalization and death. The vaccines offer “relatively low effectiveness for prevention” against transmission over time, Ladapo said.

Watch at least the first two minutes of this video. In a sane world this bullshit tapdancing would be an automatic disqualifier for somebody vying for this position.

RonJohn, a.k.a. the dumbest man in the Senate, has a new COVID conspiracy he's pumping.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) has found a new conspiracy theory to peddle about the effective and safe COVID-19 vaccines: that somehow, uncovered by the media, and silenced by government health officials, hordes of athletes are dropping dead on the field after getting the jab.

First things first: They’re not.

Johnson, the U.S. Senate’s resident COVID-19 truther, went on right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk’s show this week to repeat some of his most dangerous talking points about the vaccines — namely his concern about deaths related to receiving a shot.

Johnson falsely told Kirk that there have been 22,000 deaths related to the vaccine — a number that appears to come from an inaccurate and misleading report from anti-vaccine advocates that draws from an official public government database where anyone can report adverse health effects from vaccines.

Then Johnson repeated a persistent conspiracy theory from anti-vaccine activists that professional athletes are literally dropping dead on the field because of the COVID-19 vaccine.

“The Faucis of the world are just blowing it all off, the Biden administration [says] nothing to see here,” Johnson said. “Of course we’ve heard story after story, I mean, all these athletes dropping dead on the field. But we are supposed to ignore that.”

This claim, which has been spread online through misleading videos, has been repeatedly debunked.

“Previous lists of athletes who purportedly died from the COVID-19 vaccines have included people who hadn’t died or hadn’t gotten the vaccine,” according to Politifact, which fact-checked the claim again this week after NBA All-Star John Stockton repeated it in an interview with his hometown newspaper. “There have been no official reports linking the vaccines to heart issues in athletes, and multiple sports cardiologists have called the claims unfounded.”

COVID-19 conspiracies are familiar territory for Johnson, who is running for reelection in Wisconsin this year.

COVID-19 has been detected on the remote Pacific nation of Kiribati for the first time.

Kiribati has been one of the few areas of the world that was safe from COVID-19 throughout the pandemic due to its early, strict travel restrictions and its remote location, The Associated Press reported.

But not even a month after loosening its border restrictions, the country is seeing an outbreak of COVID-19 cases.

The outbreak began when Kiribati permitted the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to bring back 54 citizens to Kiribati, many of whom had been working as missionaries, the AP reported.

Kiribati ensured the citizens were fully vaccinated and that they were tested three times in Fiji first, but 36 individuals ended up testing positive for the virus once they landed in the country.

A church spokesperson told the AP the individuals are working with authorities and staying in quarantine.

The number of positive cases has since jumped to 181, and Kiribati is now deploying coronavirus restrictions such as lockdowns, curfews and quarantine sites. The government has declared a state of disaster in the nation with only 113,000 residents and few intensive care unit beds, according to the AP.

Just 33 percent of Kiribati's citizens are fully vaccinated.

Is NYC slipping up on its "show your vaccine card before you enter" rule?  I was in the city in October and no restaurant skipped over the show your card rule, even the tiny crowded bagel stores.

I guess this conspiracy is bigger than we thought.  No wonder people long for the good ole' days when you just catch a deadly virus and die from it.  You don't have to worry about anything like what a vaccine really does to you.
