Let’s cut through the trickle-down BS and get real: Higher wages don’t trigger inflation. Corporate greed does. Journalist Matt Stoller estimates that 60% of the price increases that ordinary Americans are paying are going directly to corporate profits, not to compensate for global supply issues or compensate for higher-priced goods. Don’t let anyone tell you workers are to blame for inflation. When we raise wages, consumers have more to spend, and our economy can grow from the middle out. mattstoller.substack.com/p/corporate-profits-drive-60-of-inflation

Here's a bit of analysis that attempts to find out how much of what we've got it actual inflation and how much is corporate price gouging. Spoiler Alert: We're getting f***ed. The pandemic and resulting economic issues have been a boon to a number of American corporations.

Hello Americans...inflation is not unique to this country. It's a worldwide problem. People fail to realize how interconnected the world is.

The numbers for June just came out. Ouch!
Fuel prices were expected but if you look at the FRED graph on rents you can see that the slope of the increase became steeper around mid-2021. I really don't understand how the lower 50% of earners in this country can function anymore.

Inflation slipped a bit more.
I heard on the news that two big factors that still exist in inflation are the prices of food and rents. OK, maybe there's all sorts of reasons that food is more expensive but rents? Doesn't that mostly just mean that landlords have jacked up their prices? This is what it looks like out there if you're renting.

Another look at rents.

I'm not sure that the rent increases are due to old-fashioned inflation so much as it is a reflection of Covid and post Covid demands for housing in exurban and other areas. In CA at least a lot of people fled the urban areas searching for larger houses to accommodate a better work from home environment. As house prices increased people couldn't afford them and then went towards rentals...both houses and apartments.
Food..is there a lag time between when gas prices decline and when the market adjusts to lower transportation costs? Plus drought is cutting productivity of fields, causing fallowing of land, and culling of herds.

Here is one of many rent charts I see where rents are inflating more quickly than income. Note that this is household income and the rate of women in the workplace increased since 1960. Mother Jones also has some interesting stuff showing that this appears to be true more recently though that data only goes through 2017.

I'm no economist but it looks to me like over the years the US has tried only interest rate increases...heaven forbid taxes get increased or antitrust measures are enforced.

Why is the U.S. trying to fight global inflation with domestic interest rate policy? It seems like a reasonable question. I'd love to read what Krugman has to say about it.

B…b…but, it’s Biden’s inflation, isn’t it?!? Ditto re curiosity on Krugman’s opinion. I’ll have to interrogate Dear Son a bit; his AP Microeconomics course uses Krugman’s text.

Krugman on inflation (Wayback machine link). He's kinda' optimistic but still believes in rate hikes. No explanation of global vs. domestic causes which is unfortunate.

Well that makes too much sense...it'll never fly because our American oligarchs will be kind and will tinkle the profits down to the rest of us. It the meantime gas price in California are truly skyrocketing.

One view that today's inflation is not the same as it was in the 70s. The profiteering needs to be addressed but that won't happen with today's Republican Party. They'll protect obscene profits to the hilt and feed their sheeple base a big bowl of "FREEDUMB!"
