It's time for McCarthy et al to go to the Democrats and try to cut some deals with them in exchange for voting for Jeffries. Not a chance. Over on TPM’s chat room somebody had posted Robert Reich saying the only way this could work is if a handful of less insane Republicans cut a deal with the Dems. There’s no way they’d trust McCarthy plus anything he’d have to promise would lose him more/all Republican votes.

Yeah, I don't think so either. Any Republicans who agreed to a power sharing agreement would be radioactive and given the current political mood would be primaried in a split second and lose. It would be political suicide. There might be couple who are ready to retire but not nearly enough.

Also, it sounds like it would turn the Speakership into something akin to herding cats. Would any of these idiots follow any leadership that struck a deal with the evil Demoncrats?

Qevin is reportedly whoring himself out even further, offering the ability for a single member to call for a vote to remove the Speaker at any time, offering up better committee assignments (which may piss off people who are supporting him if they look like they'll get bumped), and promising performative votes on more stupid shit. It's likely not enough for the hardline MAGAts because they're getting such juicy air time playing the asshole. Here's Bimboebert who, gaggingly, is actually supposed to be on MSNBC to talk about this tonight.

Vote # 7...same result as #6, #5.... These concessions concern me a lot. The more control McCarthy promises to the 20 jerks, the more intransigent they will be if we ever get to the stage of actually legislating. They will use it to tie up anything they don't like.

And Gaetz voted for Trump, while Boebert voted for some guy from Oklahoma who voted for McCarthy.

I thought I put this chart of every Speaker vote in history that went beyond the first round but apparently not. There are only 8 prior votes that weren't settled by the 3rd round. Out of those 8, three were in the lead-up to the Civil War and those numbers were truly massive.
They'll at least tie the 68th Congress at 9 but there are years where it was settled in rounds 10, 11, and 12. If they go past those, which seems possible/probable it will be at least the second worst performane outside of the Civil War era. Next stop to be the worst other than the Civil War era is 22. That's pathetic but, of course, "they built this."

And McCarthy fails on the 10th vote. Only 6 more records to fall.

Now that Qevin seems to be going down in flames for the 10th Round I decided to annotate the chart. Since it's going to go to at least 11 this will end up being the largest number of votes in 164 years.
And this is just obligatory for Round 11.

And McCarthy loses the 11th vote.

So when are the 200+ Reps that vote for McCarthy going to say "come on people Let's find a less objectionable Rep to nominate and pressure McCarthy and the jerks to end their staring contest."
Gaetz and Boebert seem to be having the time of their lives...that alone is a bad sign for the rest of the Reps. I wonder how much money is pouring into their accounts because of this.

The problem is that they don't care if nothing gets done. As John Boehner said, they only want to throw sand in the gears and prevent the federal government from working.

The problem is that they don't care if nothing gets done. It's a bit of an infinite loop to consider that the only two successful votes in the House for the GOP majority so far are ... to adjourn.

Just saw this on Twitter;

The Republican Speakership ceremony has its roots in pre-Congressional pagan rituals. Having brought the party to power, the Minority Leader must now be publicly sacrificed to ensure the GOP has the blessings of the gods for the upcoming term
**Personal observation: I'm not on twitter, but this person has an excellent literary sense. They've used both a TS Eliot and a Bradbury reference in a signature line. We should invite them over.
