Three secret pages? I wish I could say I was shocked.

The rules package was at the center of McCarthy’s fight for the speakership. The 55-page document lays out the GOP priorities for the next two years and the procedures Republicans will use to run the chamber.

However, there’s also a secret three-page addendum that McCarthy and his allies hashed out during several days of grueling negotiations with the House Freedom Caucus. This pact includes the most controversial concessions McCarthy made in order to become speaker – three seats on the Rules Committee for conservatives, freezing spending at FY2022 levels, a debt-ceiling strategy, coveted committee assignments and more.

As of now, only two Republicans have publicly signaled they may vote against the rules package: Reps. Tony Gonzales (Texas) and Nancy Mace (S.C.).

Yeah they say they want more transparency into the process....just not this process.

The House GOP has passed its rules package and now the 118th Congress in the House is off to the races. But the rules package was never where McCarthy’s real concessions resided. The rules package wasn’t what signed control of the House over to the Freedom Caucus. That was contained in informal promises where McCarthy agreed to cede control over the committee that schedules votes, where he committed to backing the Freedom Caucus’s debt default plans and more.

I had assumed these were verbal agreements over hand shakes. But apparently not. According to the insider sheet Punchbowl News, in addition to the 55 page rules package hashed out between McCarthy’s supporters and the Freedom Caucus there was an additional, secret three page document spelling out the real agreement.

That’s the roadmap that will likely lead to a US debt default later this year. It seems like even most House Republicans haven’t seen it. But since the rest of the country will endure the economic and geopolitical carnage of a US debt default, it should be published. Getting a hold of it should be a top priority for every news organization. Democrats should be demanding to see it.

I think the challenge will be to find someone who wants to take this job.  

I suspect even now Speaker Johnson will be relieved to be unseated. Trying to placate the crazy caucus is probably exhausting. Whatever he thought he could achieve in the job he hasn't. No federal ban on abortion, hasn't ended the Department of Education, "reforming" Social Security, or impeaching Joe Biden and no chance to make that happen before the November elections.

And those conversations could soon intensify, particularly after GOP Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky announced Tuesday he was signing on to the motion to vacate led by GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia – a precarious development for Johnson in a shrinking majority. The speaker will not be able to lose more than one Republican on party-line votes.

That MTG and her comrades have worked to choke off one Speaker and are gunning for another is not surprising.  That so many Republican House members whose names we never hear acquiesce in the neutering of their House is amazing, not in a good way. Even Speaker Johnson has come to see that shutting down the government would be a bad thing, so he went far enough to prevent that. Blowing up the compact with the rest of the world to shut down aggression by one country towards another seems just fine with him, so far. But that's what MTG wants (and probably the former president and definitely the Russian president) so here we are again.

It seems likely the Democrats will help Johnson keep his speaker's job as long as he brings Ukraine aid to the floor.

Part of me thinks Johnson is sick of the nonsense and is doing a Jesus Take the Wheel thing.  Part of me thinks he has a deal with Democrats.  I wonder what he talked about with Trump a couple weeks ago.
