A white secretary at a Louisiana school abruptly resigned from her position late last week after making racist comments about Martin Luther King Jr. Day in a text conversation with a coach.

In a Monday Facebook post, self-described artist-activist-organizer Walter Geno McLaughlin shared a video that included an image of Nelwyn Fontana, the office secretary at Ouachita Parish Junior High School, along with a screenshot of the alleged text messages, which referred to “n****r day.”

A local outlet reported that the messages—which were confirmed by officials—were sent to a coach at the school, who was stunned by what they’d received.

“Nelwyn Fontana is office secretary at Ouachita Jr High in Monroe, LA and took time on this #MLKDay to let us know how she really feels about honoring Dr. King,” McLaughlin wrote in the post. “What she didn’t realize is that she accidentally sent her hate filled message to the wrong person.”

McLaughlin continued: “These are the type of people we entrust to educate our children. …From what I understand the school district allowed her to resign but there are many who feel like she should’ve been terminated.”

In the screenshot of the message, Fontana informed the coach about the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

“N****r day lol mark Luther king,” she wrote, according to the screenshot.

“Huh ? Say what? Where that come from,” the other person responded.

“Remind your play[ers] Sunday [we’re] off Monday . For Mark Luther King Day Monday,” Fontana continued, appearing to confuse King Jr.’s first name.

The House Oversight and Accountability Committee adopted its new rules on Tuesday after rejecting six amendments proposed by Democrats, in a first glimpse of a key committee whose new chairman, James R. Comer, has promised to launch a series of partisan investigations.

The Republican from Kentucky has vowed to probe President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, for alleged “influence peddling,” the U.S. border crisis and the military withdrawal from Afghanistan. A hearing scheduled for Thursday will tackle “waste, fraud and abuse” in federal pandemic spending.

In one of his first moves as chairman, Comer renamed the panel’s five subcommittees, saying it would help jump-start those investigations.

As part of the subcommittee realignment, Comer eliminated the panel’s Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, which rankled Democrats in the wake of the death of Tyre Nichols at the hands of Memphis police.

Freshman Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, introduced an amendment that would have reinstated the subcommittee and “show the American people what this committee stands for,” she said.

Well, under GOPstapo control we know what this committee stands for.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, one of several GOP firebrands seated on the panel this Congress, said Nichols’ death was tragic but that she doubted it was a civil rights issue. Instead, she shifted the conversation to Capitol rioter Ashli Babbitt, who was killed during the Jan. 6 insurrection and whose mother was in the room Tuesday.

“There has never been a trial. As a matter of fact, no one has cared about the person that shot and killed her, and no one in this Congress has really addressed that issue,” Greene said. “And I believe that there are many people that came into the Capitol Jan. 6 whose civil rights and liberties are being violated heavily.”

A viral TikTok video shows the moment a Black HVAC technician claims a client called the cops on him and falsely accused him of threatening her.

“Here’s a sample of what life is like being a black man in America. …#happyblackhistorymonth,” reads a caption for the clip, which was uploaded Wednesday by Alonzo Harmon.

In the TikTok video, which was taken on Nov. 29, 2022, Harmon turns the camera toward himself and can be seen standing outside a garage in Golden Valley, Minnesota, as it snows. A woman inside the garage appears as if she’s talking on the phone.

“She is on the phone with 911 right now,” Harmon says to the camera.

“He says I’m rude, and he just threatened me right now,” the woman says on her call.

Harmon, standing several feet away from the woman, says, “What threat did I make towards you, ma’am?”

The woman, who identified herself as “Elizabeth,” ignores Harmon’s question.

In the next part of the video, the woman cries hysterically as Harmon suggests she’s faking her tears.

“Please, please, please! I’m so scared right now!” the woman yells on the call. “I’m shaking right now! Please, please! …I’m so scared!”

Meanwhile, Harmon continues to stand outside the garage, away from the woman.

“I’ve never in my life had to deal with no bullshit like this,” he then laughs, walking away from the garage.

The Golden Valley Police Department declined to confirm Harmon’s account of what transpired before and after the phone call, but provided a police report showing that two officers responded to the house and left without taking any further action.

DeSatanist gets called out for his racism. He loves it.

The College Board hit back at Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) on Saturday for rejecting their pilot Advanced Placement African American Studies course – and using his public rejection for political gain. DeSantis has since said he will “re-evaluate” the state’s relationship with the nonprofit.

In an open letter published over the weekend, the educational nonprofit characterized the DeSantis administration’s vocal rejection of the course as a “PR stunt” used to further the governor’s agenda. The organization also expressed regret over not addressing DeSantis’ attacks sooner.

“We deeply regret not immediately denouncing the Florida Department of Education’s slander, magnified by the DeSantis administration’s subsequent comments, that African American Studies ‘lacks educational value,’” they wrote.

The white students involved in a racist video in which they spray painted themselves to appear in blackface have been expelled from Philadelphia’s Saint Hubert Catholic School for Girls. The video was posted online and went viral last week, resulting in an investigation from the school’s administration and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. In the video, one girl sprays the face of another girl and mocks Black History Month. In another clip, a student wears a durag and says the N-word. “The severity of the situation at hand demanded and the repugnant nature of the behavior on the part of some of our students demanded that we swiftly conduct a thorough investigation that examined all possible facts. As a result, the young women who [are] responsible for this situation have been identified and they are no longer members of this school community,” Saint Hubert released in a statement Saturday. The school did not specify how many students were expelled, but claimed students and faculty will undergo anti-bias training next week.

If a pair of Tennessee lawmakers have their way, a stretch of a Nashville street named for the late congressman and Civil Rights icon John Lewis would be renamed for former President Donald Trump.

Nashville Councilwoman Zulfat Suara, a Democrat who was chair of the Rep. John Lewis Way Committee, spoke to TPM about why the proposal is “an insult” and how she plans to fight it.

“It’s not even about who they want to name it after. It’s the whole idea that we would have a hero in our midst, would name the street after him, and then somebody says in 2023 you cannot,” Suara said in a phone interview on Tuesday. “For my kids’ sake, I hope it doesn’t happen.”

Lewis, who passed away in mid-2020, was a towering figure in the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. As the chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, a leading anti-segregation group, he was one of the key organizers of the 1963 March on Washington. Lewis was also one of the original 13 “Freedom Riders” who braved arrests and violence while riding bus lines in the South in an effort to press for integration along the routes. He was, famously, brutally beaten by Alabama state troopers while leading a 1965 march for voting rights. In the 1980s, Lewis moved to Georgia and began a career in electoral politics. A Democrat, Lewis spent time on Atlanta’s City Council before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives where he served for over three decades.

After Lewis’ death, Suara and other local activists pushed to have a street named for him due to his ties to the city. Lewis attended college in Nashville and his history of starting what he famously dubbed “good trouble” arguably began there. The first of his many arrests came when he and other student activists staged a series of landmark sit-ins at lunch counters in the downtown stretch of the city.

Highlighting Lewis’ ties to Nashville was a major motivation behind the drive to dedicate “Rep. John Lewis Way.”

“People talk about his story, about his history, but people don’t always make the connection to Nashville,” Suara explained.

Antisemitism is on the rise everywhere, and it seems high school sports are no exception. Students at a Jewish school and a Catholic school in Miami came to blows this week after a soccer game when players allegedly hurled antisemitic slurs and said, “Hitler was right.” Shoves and punches were exchanged between students from the Scheck Hillel Community School and Archbishop Coleman Carroll High School, leading to one injury. Video shows an initial confrontation escalating as teammates and eventually participants from the stands join in. In the aftermath of the brawl, both schools released a joint statement condemning the incident, saying, “The Archdiocese of Miami and Scheck Hillel have zero tolerance for any kind of aggressive language and behavior, antisemitism or hate of any kind” and thanking “the faculty of both schools, who immediately managed the situation with care and concern for the students.” Both schools said they are looking into what happened and will take “appropriate action.”

I wonder how, when so many are convinced that there is a Radical Islamic plot to overthrow this country and who worried about how the internet is radicalizing those Muslims, that they won't see that the same process works on a lot people of all stripes.
