Hate crimes in the United States rose in 2021 to the highest level since the federal government began tracking the data more than three decades ago, the FBI said Monday in a new report that also reflected a record spike in attacks targeting people of Asian descent.

States and local jurisdictions reported 10,840 bias-motivated crimes, up nearly 25 percent from 2020 and significantly more than the previous high of 9,730 tallied in 2001.

The data showed increases in crimes targeting all major categories, including racial minorities, religious groups and the gay and lesbian community. There were 746 attacks targeting people of Asian descent in 2021, up from 249 a year earlier and the most ever recorded in a single year.

“This is a horrifying record that is greater than what we saw in 2001,” said Brian Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University at San Bernardino, who tracks hate-crime data.

“What this establishes, along with our research, is that we have hit an inflection point now, in this decade, in regards to hate crimes that we haven’t seen since modern data collection began," Levin said in an interview Monday. "The significance of this is that there are now multiple years of increases.”

Levin said his center has collected data from nearly three dozen big cities that shows continued increases in hate crimes in 2022.

A study was done of racial disparities in the granting of PPP loans. Disgusting, but hardly shocking.

They analyze nearly 6 million PPP loans made between April 2020 and February 2021, when program rules were changed to give explicit priority to small firms and minority-owned businesses. Within the sample, Black-owned businesses accounted for 8.6 percent of all loans. They accounted for 3.3 percent of loans issued by small banks, compared with 26.5 percent of loans made by fintech lenders. Although fintech lenders made just 17.4 percent of overall loans in the sample, they processed 53.6 percent of loans received by Black-owned businesses.

Gee, why is that? Bold mine.

The researchers found that two-thirds of the lending disparity can be accounted for by differences in business characteristics between Black-owned and other businesses. After controlling for business differences, the study found no significant racial disparity among loans issued by the top four banks. But Black-owned businesses remained disproportionately less likely to obtain their PPP loans from small and mid-sized banks, and more likely to obtain PPP loans from fintech lenders. These differences could not be accounted for by lenders’ preference for extending loans to businesses with which they had preexisting banking relationships, by a preference for businesses with healthier bottom lines, or by differential fraud rates. The researchers also found no evidence that the observed lending disparity was primarily driven by differential propensity of Black-owned firms to seek out loans from fintech firms. To assess the potential role of discrimination, the researchers compared the behavior of small and mid-sized banks based in areas with different levels of “racial animus,” which was measured using the percentage of an area’s Google searches that contained racially charged language, responses to surveys designed to detect prejudice, and the extent of local housing segregation. They found that in regions with higher racial animus, Black-owned businesses were particularly likely to get their PPP loans from fintech lenders, and less likely to get them from small- or medium-sized banks.

Black business owners fared best when seeking PPP loans from sources that relied on automated lending processes commonly used in the fintech sector and by the nation’s largest banks. They fared worst with small and mid-sized banks, where human subjectivity was more likely to influence lending decisions. The researchers directly study the effect of automation by leveraging the fact that, during the PPP loan period, a number of small banks automated their loan origination processes. The share of PPP loans by small banks directed to Black-owned businesses rose substantially after automation, particularly in areas with higher racial animus.

The state House took up resolutions to expel three Democratic lawmakers over their actions interrupting a floor session and using a bullhorn to lead chants for gun control.

Rep. Justin Jones, D-Nashville, was expelled by a vote of 72 to 25 after 90 minutes of debate. Rep. Gloria Johnson, D-Knoxville, was not expelled after the resolution to oust her failed by one vote. Rep. Justin J. Pearson, D-Memphis, was expelled by a vote of 69 to 26.

The expulsions mark the fourth time since the end of the Civil War when House members expelled their elected colleagues.

Kids outside the state house chanted "You ban books You ban drag. Kids are still in body bags".

Residents in some Atlanta neighborhoods are expressing concern and outrage after waking up to antisemitic and transphobic flyers left for residents.

The Atlanta Police Department says their Homeland Security Unit is investigating the incident, but they are not aware of any criminal-related acts directly associated with the flyers.

The flyers claim six Jewish individuals are behind a "rise in transgenderism".

The flyers appear to point to a particular group the Anti-Defamation League identifies as the "Goyim Defense League". Their websites allow users to download and print flyers, as well as give tips on the best ways to distribute them. Georgia is one of the eight known states the group has been known to have surfaced.

"Their distribution has led to a heightened level of awareness throughout our department, and we have increased patrols around where the flyers were found," Atlanta Police wrote in a statement sent to FOX 5.

Georgia Republicans are taking this about as seriously as you'd expect.

This past General Assembly, House Bill 30 was introduced, which sponsors say would provide a definition to help prosecutors and other officials identify hate crimes and illegal discrimination targeting Jewish people.

State Rep. Esther Panitch, one of the bill’s sponsors and Georgia’s only Jewish legislator, was among those who found anti-Jewish flyers in their driveways in suburban Atlanta just a few weeks before the House approved the measure.

Panitch and co-sponsor Republican Rep. John Carson of Marietta asked to have the bill set aside in March after the Senate Judiciary Committee adopted the amendment proposed by Sen. Ed Setzler of Acworth which changed the definition of antisemitism to define it as only the negative perception of Jews instead of a "certain" perception.

The measure would have adopted into state law a definition by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, which defines antisemitism as a "perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews" and can have both "rhetorical and physical manifestations." Supporters say a legal definition is necessary because officials don’t always recognize antisemitism.

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow began her Monday show with a list of pro-Nazi speakers that are being welcomed to the Trump Hotel in Miami for an event where a number of former White House officials will also be speaking.

A former national security adviser, a former U.S. trade chief, a former Pentagon chief of staff and a former acting attorney general are all appearing at the same confab with those who have promoted Nazi ideology — and in some cases — Hitler himself.

"This week all of those people I just mentioned, literally, the guy who was the attorney general of the United States and the chief of staff and the national security adviser and the White House trade chief, all the rest of these guys with these very high-up jobs, this week, all of them are speaking at the same event in Miami. An event at a hotel owned by the former president. It will include all those Trump administration officials as well as the former president's adult son, Eric, the blond one, his daughter-in-law, plus a lot of Trump administration folks."

But it's the neo-Nazis that will be joining the Trump acolytes that might be new faces to the rest of America.

Scott McKay is a guy who blamed "the Jews" for killing Abraham Lincoln and William McKinley will speak at the event with Trump administration officials. He'll be welcomed to the podium to speak before the former White House staffers.

Far-right commentator, Charlie Ward is another one joining the event. He is known for sharing actual videos of speeches by Hitler and proclaiming that Sept. 11 was a secret plot by "the Jews." He also believes the Earth is flat and that President Joe Biden and Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett are lizard people.

The event is part of Michael Flynn's new Christian nationalism cult.

The digital director for Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) is a full blown, completely insane, all in white supremacist. If white robes and hoods were still in fashion he'd be wearing them. Instead he just wears a MAGA cap.

Nick Fuentes was under attack.

On May 6, 2022, two high-ranking members of Fuentes’ white-supremacist “Groyper” movement had defected from his organization and gone on a rival far-right streaming show to criticize Fuentes and air their grievances about the group. Fuentes responded five days later on his own stream, “America First.” After denouncing his “enemies,” Fuentes raised his hand and made a demand from his remaining followers.

“Now it’s time to pledge your allegiance to me forever, OK?” Fuentes declared.

Fuentes was seated in front of a digital studio backdrop with a Russian flag bearing the “Z” insignia used by supporters of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in the corner of his screen. In a chat feed alongside the host, messages from viewers poured in. They took Fuentes’ oath via emoji, sending in row after row of cartoon hands. One audience member who pledged fealty to Fuentes used the handle “Chikken.” A wrench icon next to their name indicated they were a moderator in the chatroom for Fuentes’ streams. “Chikken” sent in multiple hand emojis, signaling their loyalty to Fuentes as he elaborated on the pledge.

“Raise your right hand. ‘I swear my undying allegiance to Nicholas J. Fuentes and the America First movement, so help me God,’” Fuentes said, continuing to recite his pledge, “Raise your hand. Hold it high. ‘I swear I will defend the white race, my nation America, and my savior Jesus Christ, and my loyalty to the America First movement, Nicholas J. Fuentes, so help me God.’”

As the emojis continued to roll in, Fuentes punctuated his oath by crossing his arms across his chest and — as he often does — unleashing racial slurs.

“What more do you want from a n***a? What more do you want from a n***a?” he asked.

Many of his followers were clearly on board. In addition to emojis, they sent in paid “superchats” that allowed them to display a note on the screen alongside Fuentes. These paid messages are a staple of Fuentes’ broadcasts on Cozy TV, the video platform Fuentes launched after he was suspended from YouTube for violations of its hate speech policy in 2020. Fuentes read these “superchats” aloud. Most of the donors gave a few dollars, but one, who used the handle “Chikkenright,” gave an especially generous gift, $150, along with a note that gushed to Fuentes, “You are our voice!”

“Chikken” and “Chikkenright” were aliases associated with a social media persona that became relatively prominent in the “Groyper” movement between 2020 and last year. As he gave thanks for the donation, Fuentes indicated his personal familiarity with “Chikkenright.”

“Thank you so much Chikkenright,” Fuentes said. “Chikkenright, one of the best. Thank you so much, king.”

TPM has uncovered an extensive digital trail of interconnected Groyper social media pages using variations of the “ChickenRight” and “Chikken” handles that can be linked to Wade Searle, who works as the digital director for Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ), one of the most extreme, far-right members of Congress. ChickenRight’s posting on far-right websites and Searle’s alleged involvement with Fuentes occurred before and after he started working in Gosar’s Capitol Hill office. Gosar, his chief of staff, his press secretary, and Searle have not responded to multiple detailed requests for comment.

Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) enhanced his extremist cred Wednesday with an interview in which he was asked whether white nationalists should serve in the military: “They call them that. I call them Americans.”

He tried doing – damage control? – with reporters on Thursday in the Capitol. It went great!

Dennis Prager is doing his part to whitewash history with excuses why slavery wasn't all bad.

PragerU, a kind of rightwing think tank founded in 2009 by Los Angeles-based radio commentator Dennis Prager, mostly cranks out short instructional videos — lectures for adults and cartoons for the kids — that repurpose right-wing agitprop into misleading history lessons.

A Prager animation depicts Columbus telling a couple of time-traveling 21st Century children to stop dissing him for enslaving the New World’s native inhabitants, given that at the time, slavery was “no big deal.” Besides, said cartoon Christopher with unassailable logic, “being taken as a slave is better than being killed.”

Not to be outdone by Columbus, an animated version of Frederick Douglass, the 19th century abolitionist, author and orator, a onetime slave himself, tells kids (no doubt surprising his biographers): “I’m certainly not OK with slavery, but the Founding Fathers made a compromise to achieve something great: the making of the United States.”

Members of the white supremacist organization Patriot Front have filed a federal lawsuit against a leftist activist, claiming he infiltrated their group and revealed their identities as members.

The activist's "doxxing" of the four plaintiffs as members of Patriot Front cost them their jobs, incomes and relationships with family members, the lawsuit claims.

Filed in federal court in the Western District of Washington by a Spokane law firm, the case is an unusual new tactic from members of Patriot Front. The Texas-based group has gained notoriety for holding marches with dozens of masked young men wearing chinos, carrying American flags and chanting slogans. Last year, 31 members of Patriot Front were arrested when police pulled over a U-Haul that was allegedly transporting them to disrupt a Pride event in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. They were charged with conspiracy to riot.

One of the iconic Onion headlines of the late 20th century was 1998’s “Why Do All These Homosexuals Keep Sucking My Cock?” The satirical first-person column is written by a stereotypical macho hetero male, who insists he has nothing against gays, but is growing increasingly outraged by the audacity of the many men who insist on orally pleasuring him in gym locker rooms, remote hiking trails, and random bathrooms.

For the irony-averse, the joke is that if you’re finding yourself increasingly homophobic after unwittingly receiving fellatio from many anonymous members of your own gender—while insisting you’re not gay and have no idea how you keep finding yourself with your pants down in the company of strange men—perhaps you’re overdue for a moment of honest self-reflection.

That quarter-century-old joke headline is reminiscent of what’s happening to many prominent voices and organizations among the ostensibly reasonable and respectable political right—as well as the right-leaning center. They insist they have no tolerance for bigotry, and yet, they keep finding themselves with their pants down in a room full of racists. And they don’t seem much interested in figuring out how or why it continues to happen.

I can already hear the free speech tourists dashing off their libel lawsuit threats, but this isn’t even hyperbole, much less slander.

In just the past two weeks, the conservative/libertarian/heterodox-center’s relative comfort with online edgelord shitposters, “ironic” lib-trolling racism, and alt-right-adjacent race realism blew up spectacularly in its own face—as three young rising stars of the mainstream right were unmasked as being a little-too-cool with overtly racist stuff to be good for business.

The crackers were all brave when their odds were 5:1 but once the tour boat pulled up their odds shifted rather dramatically, and they got their asses whupped. Three of them are now being charged with assault.

This is a follow-up. They apparently went to the hospital for treatment and found out that black people don't just work at the dock. I heard that this won't be prosecuted as a hate crime. I call bullshit.

An Aug. 9 Facebook post (direct link, archive link) shows a group of women walking with flowers in their hands, smiling as they approach the Montgomery riverfront in Alabama and toss the petals into the river.

The caption of the post is foreboding: “2 hours before the Montgomery, AL Brawal (sic), 30 witches walked to the river to give sacrifices & to burn incense to the ancestral spirits which opened portals to demonic familiar spirits. AS THE WITCHES STATED, NOTHING IS A COINCIDENCE…. THIS DEFINITELY EXPLAINS HOW THIS SITUATION ESCALATED THE WAY IT DID."

(USA Fact check gives it a "False" rating.  I would have called it *&^&%$ dumb.)

The women in the video are not witches. They were part of a weekend event for Black women that promoted mental, physical and spiritual healing. The Montgomery brawl that took place hours later was unrelated and caused by an argument over boat docking.

A Muslim man plans to file a lawsuit this week against a Michigan orchard after he and his family were racially profiled and interrogated by the orchard owner, who bragged about being a bigot and claimed Muslims “are always stealing” after he barged into and searched their vehicle for stolen fruit.

Joe Mahmoud made a lengthy Facebook post Monday about his family’s excursion to Erie Orchards & Cider Mill in Monroe County that gained nearly 3,000 shares, over 1,000 reactions, and more than 800 comments by Wednesday afternoon.

“I wish I didn’t have to write this, but yesterday’s unfortunate incident compelled me to share my story and ask for your support,” Mahmoud wrote.

Mahmoud said that he would’ve been fine with paying for the rotten peaches until he realized the owner was trying to charge the family $58.

“We had a small bag of fruit which is clearly posted inside as $2.49 a pound,” Mahmoud wrote in the Facebook post. “I would’ve needed almost 24 pounds of fruit to equal $58!!”

After telling Elzinga that he didn’t want the peaches at all and gave them back, that’s when the owner allegedly went on an Islamophobic tirade and Mahmoud began recording.

“Every Muslim that comes in here steals from me,” Elzinga is heard in the video. “And that’s why you’re going to pay.”

“That’s racist,” Mahmoud says. “You’re a racist.”

“Oh, of course I am,” Elzinga chuckles and says he doesn’t want Muslims back at his orchard. Then, Elzinga stands by Mahmoud’s truck seemingly trying to prevent him from leaving after claiming he had called the police.

“You’re holding me hostage here,” Mahmoud tells the owner.

“I’m holding you until you pay your bill,” Elzinga responds.

“My client was held up for 45 minutes trying to leave,” Moughni told The Daily Beast. “He was being berated for the whole 45 minutes in front of his kids with these racist remarks... and at one point, when my client was trying to back up, [Elzinga] pressed his body against the car to prevent [Mahmoud] from leaving. So, [Elzinga] truly falsely imprisoned him.”

Sue his f***ing ass. If you can take his farm away from him for kidnapping you and your family, all the better.
