After January 6th of last year, people were asking me, “Aren’t you horrified?” “Isn’t this terrible?” “What do you think?” And, first of all, I wasn’t surprised, right? People who study this, we’ve been seeing these groups have been around now for over 10 years. They’ve been growing. I know that they’re training. They’ve been in the shadows, but we know about them. I wasn’t surprised.

The biggest emotion was just relief, actually. It was just, Oh my gosh, this is a gift. Because it’s bringing it out into the public eye in the most obvious way. And the result has to be that we can’t deny or ignore that we have a problem. Because it’s right there before us. And what has been surprising, actually, is how hard the Republican Party has worked to continue to deny it and to create this smokescreen — and in many respects, how effective that’s been, at least among their supporters.

Wow: Even the most public act of insurrection, probably a treasonous act that 10, 20 years ago would have just cut to the heart of every American, there are still real attempts to deny it. But it was a gift because it brought this cancer that those of us who have been studying it, have been watching it growing, it brought it out into the open. 

What we’re heading toward is an insurgency, which is a form of a civil war. That is the 21st-century version of a civil war, especially in countries with powerful governments and powerful militaries, which is what the United States is. And it makes sense. An insurgency tends to be much more decentralized, often fought by multiple groups. Sometimes they’re actually competing with each other. Sometimes they coordinate their behavior. They use unconventional tactics. They target infrastructure. They target civilians. They use domestic terror and guerrilla warfare. Hit-and-run raids and bombs. We’ve already seen this in other countries with powerful militaries, right? The IRA took on the British government. Hamas has taken on the Israeli government. These are two of the most powerful militaries in the world. And they fought for decades. And in the case of Hamas I think we could see a third intifada. And they pursue a similar strategy.

Here it’s called leaderless resistance. And that method of how to defeat a powerful government like the United States is outlined in what people are calling the bible of the far right: “The Turner Diaries,” which is this fictitious account of a civil war against the U.S. government. It lays out how you do this. And one of the things it says is, Do not engage the U.S. military. You know, avoid it at all costs. Go directly to targets around the country that are difficult to defend and disperse yourselves so it’s hard for the government to identify you and infiltrate you and eliminate you entirely.

This is a little bit of a long read but it's completely worth it. The author is Dakota Adams, the son (he changed his name) of Oath Keepers founder/leader and indicted traitor Stewart Rhodes. It gives real insight into just how awful this toxic mix of insanity and grift really is.

My own childhood politics of course grew harder and more fringe in my survivalist adolescence, as Oath Keepers transformed into Stewart's roving private army and income machine behind the veterans' org facade, but the drift into further anti-government belief wasn't quite what would set me up to fall for the Cult of Number 45 later on. Neither were the anonymous internet boards filled with outcasts and edge cases, efficiently compromised by white supremacist recruiters, the strongest influence, although the endless MAGA memes that would pour through that vector certainly made an impact. I had carried on the activist spirit of the sign parties for a while, evangelizing Ron Paul's 'real' message, the one the media kept you from hearing, and the good words of Bo Gritz and Ayn Rand to the online masses (that last with some caveats, even then).

Over time the sheer weight of depression and stress from the constant looming civil war and fall of society ground me down, and outlasting Bernie Bros in online arguments lost its luster with everything else. I spent my remaining adolescence with one foot in apocalypse training and one foot in basement-dwelling NEET-dom, burying myself in the internet to avoid having to think about The Coming End and taking shelter in web novels and anime when life became unbearable.

The Coming End ruled my life, variously called The Collapse, The Crash, the End of Days (for the religious), and sometimes in our family wryly referred to as the “a-Cop-alypse.” It was an economic crash, a nuclear war, a mass terrorist attack, a natural disaster, any event that would end civil society and reduce the United States to a war of all against all as the starving masses turned on each other, local warlords with looted military hardware rising to fill the power vacuum. All of this was of course to be engineered by nefarious forces within the government, taking advantage of a naturally occurring crisis causing one directly to create a situation so bad that most people would beg for a totalitarian rule that would restore order to the chaos.

The government faking a biological terrorist attack by a hostile nation like Iran, a ‘False Flag’ attack, to create domestic chaos and start a convenient war simultaneously was a popular scenario. The cause varied with the headlines and the times, fallout from Fukushima or a North Korean EMP attack as examples, but the belief remained concrete and it was always at most eighteen months away.

Some welcomed The Collapse as a chance to start society over again, others harbored juvenile fantasies of their survivalism paying off in social status and sexual conquest when the fall of civilization made them superior to the starving ‘nu-males,’ others simply believed in it as an inevitability to be weathered, or as a fulfillment of Biblical prophecy. Some, like me, lived in unending fear.

I knew my family was not ready to survive a collapse, not under Stewart’s leadership.

Yes, misogyny is a part of right-wing military cosplay.

I somehow ended up avoiding misogyny despite all efforts by my father and his circle. So, when early GamerGate turned from YouTubers like TotalBiscuit actually talking about ethical games journalism to become a firestorm of entitled sexually frustrated hatred, I stepped off the bandwagon.

There are real issues but the right-wing noise machine and militia movements primed him and others to just lash out. There was no room for actually looking at policy and who was proposing what.

Like a lot of people, for many different reasons, I felt robbed of the generally secure middle-class life that pop culture had implicitly promised. In the propaganda storm around Trump, I saw a glimmer of hope that things might be fixed, and certainly a chance to strike back at the Establishment that I blamed for the awful state of the country and my life.

I didn't really see Trump as a savior, I saw him as the Bigly-est brick the American people could pick up and throw through the White House windows. After a lifetime of fearing the machinations of political machines too vast to comprehend, I saw their churning efforts terminate in the likes of Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush, feeling simultaneously that this end state could not possibly be the work of a rational unified conspiracy and thoroughly fucking insulted. So I would pick Trump's ugly bulbous head up on election day and hurl the bastard as far as I could, to demonstrate how thoroughly done We the People were with a process that consistently returned the blandest of the worst choices.

This is an illustration of how badly these people can tie themselves into pretzels just to stay loyal to the cult.

Like a lot of the militia adjacent right-wing, I'd become somewhat enamored with the struggle of the Kurdish people. All the conservative American cultural notes were hit, independent mountain people with a love for democratic government and personal freedom who'd been at our side since the Iraq war and had taken the brunt of the losses in combating ISIS. I'd researched the foreign volunteer regiments and decided against buying a plane ticket after reading about one fighter getting his nose broken in a headbutt by a Pirates of the Caribbean actor, which was tracked for a Public Relations focused outfit that would take middle-aged dads from the UK and untrained American idiots. Like a militant Groucho Marx, I realized I should be wary of joining any paramilitary that would be willing to take me as a member. Still, I had become deeply emotionally entangled in their cause and believed they represented a bright light in a dark time for the world.

Over the course of a single hour-long phone call with a foreign dictator, our president was convinced to completely abandon our most faithful regional allies in the Global War on Terror in one of the worst strategic decisions made by any president in modern history. The Kurds were added (again) to our long list of local allies betrayed in conflicts from Tripoli to Laos, and permanently set the reputation of the United States as an unreliable ally and fair-weather friend. I watched dumbfounded as a state that possibly intended genocide was given free reign to roll over the people who had done all the dying to destroy the caliphate our national failures helped create, just so that Trump could get an attaboy from an autocratic strongman. Or maybe not just an attaboy, the more I looked at the situation objectively the more I saw that in every aspect Putin gained enormously. This decision had done us no good in any respect, but had many advantages for the strategic goals of Russia. Standing in the family kitchen, I remember jokingly telling my mother that I was ready to re-think all of those Russiagate allegations. It didn't feel like a joke.

Almost more worrying was the way people I knew reacted, changing their own viewpoints to stay in lockstep with Trump. Later, when Trump was trying to drum up support for a war with Iran, I would have a bizarre argument with a bartender in which we circled endlessly from her insistence that we had no part in middle eastern “tribal conflicts” and should leave well enough alone in the entire region before immediately declaring that we needed a troop presence in the middle east to keep hostile Muslim nations done before they posed a threat. No matter how many times I tried she could not see the contradiction.

After the Las Vegas shooting I would see it again, in the swirl of disinformation that included one local trying to convince me that the entire shooting had been faked because a photographer with a telescopic lens couldn't see any bullet holes in the street.

I knew people in Las Vegas who'd been there, which led to some awkward confrontations around my small town as conspiracy theory spread. In the aftermath, Trump signed a gun control bill that banned the bump stock accessory that had been used by the shooter, successfully passing more gun control in 4 years than Obama had in 8, and I watched in amazement as many of the hardcore Second Amendment fanatics I was surrounded by twisted themselves in knots to avoid conflicting with Trump's actions.

One redneck youth told me that Trump had stopped all mass shootings permanently by banning bump stocks, people with Gadsden flag plates suddenly advocated for red flag laws and even confiscating all weapons from veterans on grounds of PTSD only to stay in step with Trump.

A Minneapolis man told cops he’d been the victim of a terrifying, politically motivated attack in the heat of the 2020 presidential race: His camper van was set on fire because it displayed a Trump flag, and the flames had spread to engulf other vehicles and his garage, which itself had been spray-painted with graffiti supporting Joe Biden and Black Lives Matter, just weeks after local police killed George Floyd.

Investigators have now concluded that he staged the whole thing.

Denis Molla, 29, from Brooklyn Center, has been charged with two counts of wire fraud over the incident in September 2020. Molla told KARE 11 he’d chased three people out of his yard on the night of the fire, and one of them had dropped a box of matches during the pursuit. When he returned home, he found his camper ablaze.

Messages that said “Biden 2020,” “BLM,” and a symbol believed to be associated with Antifa were scrawled across his garage door, which was also being destroyed by the inferno. Molla even claimed he’d rescued four sleeping puppies from inside the garage.

But law enforcement say his noble story is bullshit. Molla has been indicted for submitting over $300,000 in bogus insurance claims, and receiving around $61,000 from his insurance company.

“In reality, as Molla well knew, Molla started his own property on fire, Molla spray-painted the graffiti on his own property and there were no unknown males near his homes,” charging documents say, according to the Star Tribune.

Another terrorist is going to prison.

A Maryland man was sentenced to five months in prison for his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection.

David Blair, of Clarksburg, brought a a knife and a lacrosse stick with a Confederate flag attached to the U.S. Capitol and struck a police officer with the improvised flagpole while shouting encouragement to other rioters to keep fighting.

“Hell naw, quit backing up, don’t be scared," Blair shouted, according to prosecutors.

Blair did not go inside the Capitol but later pleaded guilty to interfering with law enforcement during a civil disorder, a felony that carries up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, and prosecutors agreed to drop eight other charges.

He was taken into custody moments after bashing the officer and offered an apology and asked to be let go.

“While in handcuffs and not in response to any questions prompted by any members of MPD, defendant Blair stated words to the effect of, ‘I understand, what I did, the one motherf*cker swung at me so I kinda switched … so I apologize, we’re done though,'” said the statement of offense.

However, police found a knife and tape in his bag during a search, and he insisted that he carried the weapon to fight off a possible attack from Antifa activists.

Ray Epps, a 61-year-old former Marine, called for Trump supporters to march into the U.S. Capitol building the night prior to the Capitol attack, and then joined them as they entered the restricted grounds outside the Capitol on the day of the riot.

Then… he became their scapegoat, accused of being a Deep State-directed agent provocateur.

As Trump allies searched for any excuse to shift blame for the Capitol attack — It was antifa! The FBI! — they seized on videos of Epps and cast him as an undercover operative looking to entrap upstanding patriots. Epps was publicly targeted by Tucker Carlson, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), and even Donald Trump himself, accused of successfully scheming to turn innocent Trump supporters into bloodthirsty rioters.

And, well, Epps is pretty pissed about it!

After months of being the subject of a wild conspiracy theory that conveniently absolves everyday Capitol attackers of their agency, Epps finally spoke publicly to The New York Times in an article published Wednesday.

“All of this, it’s just been hell,” Epps said, presumably referring not to the Jan. 6 Capitol attack — to which he was an eager attendee — but rather the false allegations that painted him as a federal asset.

“I am at the center of this thing, and it’s the biggest farce that’s ever been,” Epps told the paper. “It’s just not right. The American people are being led down a path. I think it should be criminal.”

He told the Times that, dogged by threats and harassment, he’d been forced to sell his home and business. The Times did not disclose the location of Epps’ and his wife’s current home, a trailer. The article’s dateline stated simply, “IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS.”

And the Times emphasized Epps’ role as a kinder, gentler Capitol rioter: There’s no evidence he entered the building itself. And video shows him attempting to de-escalate and calm rioters at a police line outside of the building. Like hundreds of others who breached Capitol grounds but did not enter the Capitol Building itself, Epps has not been charged for his actions.

Another white, Christian, right-wing, domestic terrorist is arrested. This is just a bit of the story. There's much more, all of it scary.

Earlier this year, a client of Christopher “Kit” Arthur told him that agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms had come to his home and taken an inventory of his weapons.

A retired Army scout and former sheriff’s deputy from Mount Olive, NC, Arthur’s business, Tackleberry Solutions, taught “wartime tactics to civilians for civil defense purposes,” as he described it in a promotional video. Arthur sold manuals that he said were developed from his direct experience in two combat tours in Iraq, and later from working in a covert drug enforcement and anti-terrorism unit in the Army National Guard.

Arthur allegedly counseled his client that he had two options: Stand and fight or flee. If he chose to stand and fight, Arthur had a specific set of instructions.

Garey testified that when the FBI searched Arthur’s house in Mount Olive, they found a stack of documents that included an order by a local judge in a child custody battle between Arthur’s wife and her ex-husband, along with a set of interrogatories directed at the judge that implied he had accepted bribes. The stack also included a document created by Arthur, the agent testified, that included a definition of tyranny “as any action taken by a governing body, agent of the government, working on behalf of said government, corporation, organization, company, LLC, or anyone in a position of power and authority to remove, destroy, pervert, or alter in any way an individual’s… right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property without full due process under the Constitution,” and prescribing that “if found guilty of this charge in a court of law, violators will be branded, stripped of all property, constitutional rights, and exiled or publicly hung by the neck until dead.”

The agent also testified that he found a sheet with the judge’s name, addresses for his workplace and residence, and descriptions of vehicles and license plate numbers associated with employees of a law firm where the judge worked.

Magistrate Judge Robert Jones ordered Arthur to remain jailed pending trial at the conclusion of the detention hearing, saying he found the defendant’s “level of enthusiasm” and “level of preparation” for evading capture to be “alarming.”

During the hearing, the government played one of Arthur’s YouTube videos.

“They have declared war on me and my family and my community,” Arthur says in the video, which was recorded in December 2020 and is aptly titled “The Siege.” “So, there will be no more peaceful negotiations. They stopped the peaceful negotiations when they tried to forcibly move themselves into my home and assassinate me and take my guns. Now, having said that, so long as we have the ability to peacefully and civilly combat that act, we should, but when they try to kick in your door, there’s no more peaceful negotiations. The time is over. That’s the time for you to start putting lead down range. Let the siege happen. At that moment, when they back off and they’re licking their wounds and so are y’all, that’s when you pick up that phone or your ham radio, or whatever form of communication you have to your fellow militia members, and you say, ‘I need help.’ And that’s when y’all man the freak up, put freakin’ boots on the ass, lead down range and bodies on the ground. And you don’t be gentle about it.”

At the conclusion of the video, Arthur says, “Remember, I am not teaching you something that is kosher with current laws on the books. This is exactly how the military really fights. This is exactly the kind of thing we do for defending our positions and our perimeters. I want you take this, put it in your head, enact it, and, when the time comes, kick ass.”

In one video posted in October 2019, part of a series entitled, “How to Overthrow a Tyrannical Government: Why Guerilla Warfare Won’t Work in America,” Arthur addresses viewers while wearing a windbreaker bearing the company logo and standing at the edge of a wooded area.

“So, let me tell you what is actually going to win this newest war coming here in the States,” he says. “And for any of you that’s got any intelligence, you can see where this is going. We are definitely going to be fighting the Deep State.”

He discusses a tactic he learned while on deployment in Iraq called “snatch ’n’ grabs,” explaining that the targets are elected officials, considering that they hold authority over the military and law enforcement. He also emphasizes that elected officials have the power to pass so-called “red-flag laws,” which allow police to temporarily remove a person’s firearms through a court order if they’re deemed a threat to themselves or others.

"Cody Mattice, 29, of Greece, N.Y., and James Mault, 30, of Brockport, N.Y., both wept as they stood before Chief U.S. District Judge Beryl A. Howell and asked for leniency, apologizing for their actions and saying they hoped to return soon to their families and young children. But Howell noted that prosecutors had already cut them a reasonable deal by dropping charges that could have led to far more prison time, and she imposed the sentences requested by the government. Only four other Jan. 6 defendants have been sentenced to longer prison terms."

“If they think I was pissed over a stolen election, they haven’t seen anything now that they have forced me to say goodbye to my crying kids,” Evans wrote.

“Whenever I decide to run for office, I’m going to win, and I’m going to raise absolute hell in DC,” he added. “Liberals and RINOs [Republicans In Name Only] will be exposed every single day.”

The ex-lawmaker’s post ended with “#Jan6” and “#justice4J6.” The second hashtag stands for “Justice for J6,” a rallying cry among Trump supporters seeking to whitewash convicted Capitol insurrectionists as “political prisoners.”

Several hours later, Evans put out another post claiming he wasn’t threatening violence.

“Sad that I once again have to say this, but everyone knows I have consistently said I will fight this battle in a legal, peaceful, and political way,” he wrote.

Evans’ rage-filled social media post about being “forced” to face the consequences of storming the Capitol stood in head-spinning contrast with his somber mea culpa during his sentencing hearing last month.

“I’m a good person who was unfortunately caught up in a moment which led to me breaking the law. I accept full responsibility for my actions,” he told the judge.

Additionally, “I will forever bear the reminder that I made a crucial mistake,” the Republican said. “I’ve let down myself, I’ve let down my community and most importantly I’ve let down my family.”

In a speech Biden laid out Trump and the Jan 6 terrorists. He made sure to specifically target the storm-trumpers' assault on law enforcement.

President Biden on Monday took aim at former President Trump’s inaction as the Capitol insurrection unfolded on Jan. 6 while he acknowledged that law enforcement had to suffer through “medieval hell” during the attack.

The President’s criticized Trump as he concluded his remarks delivered virtually to a conference in Florida for Black law enforcement officials on Monday. Biden said that law enforcement was relied upon to Jan. 6 to “save our democracy.”

“We saw what happened: the Capitol Police, the DC Metropolitan Police, other law enforcement agencies were attacked and assaulted before our very eyes. Speared. Sprayed. Stomped on. Brutalized. Lives were lost,” the President said.

Biden then condemned his predecessor for his lack of action as law enforcement responded to the violence waged by the mob of Trump supporters who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6.

“And for three hours, the defeated former President of the United States watched it all happen as he sat in the comfort of the private dining room next to the Oval Office,” Biden said. “While he was doing that, brave law enforcement officers were subject to the medieval hell for three hours, dripping in blood, surrounded by carnage.”

The President also condemned Trump supporters who boosted the former president’s election fraud falsehoods as he slammed his predecessor again for lacking “the courage to act.”

“Face to face with a crazed mob that believed the lies of the defeated President, the police were heroes that day. Donald Trump lacked the courage to act,” the President said. “The brave women and men in blue all across this nation should never forget that. You can’t be pro-insurrection and pro-cop. You can’t be pro-insurrection and pro-democracy. You can’t be pro-insurrection and pro-America.”

On Friday, NBC News reported that a pro-Trump influencer is scrambling to do damage control with his allies after a report that he revealed enormous amounts of information to FBI investigators in the January 6 investigation.

"Brandon Straka, a self-described former liberal who founded the #WalkAway movement in support of Republicans, was sentenced to three months of home detention and a total of three years of probation in January. Straka's relatively light sentence was in part due to what his lawyer described as 'significant' cooperation with the FBI investigation into the Jan. 6 attack," reported Ryan J. Reilly. "Documents detailing Straka's cooperation were placed under seal when they were filed ahead of his January 2022 sentencing, but a coalition of media companies that includes NBC News filed a motion this week requesting they be unsealed."

Now, per NBC, Straka is desperately trying to reassure allies that he is still on their side.

"After details of Straka's cooperation began spreading on social media and a story on Straka's cooperation ran on WUSA-9, Straka took to the right-leaning social media platform GETTR and posted a two-page letter expressing outrage at what he described as a 'leak,'" said the report. “'There is NOTHING WRONG with talking to the DOJ and telling them your friends are innocent,' Straka said. 'I hope at some point people pull their heads out and begin focusing on the ACTUAL horror here — that sealed court documents were leaked from within the DOJ to the liberal media.'"

But the idea that Straka was just telling investigators that his friends were innocent appears dubious, given that according to WUSA-9, Straka exposed the identity of one Capitol rioter in Nebraska that the FBI hadn't even been aware of. Moreover, "DOJ wrote in their own memo that Straka gave federal investigators critical information in the case because he 'provided the government with voicemail messages that he received from [anti-vaccine activist Simone] Gold' that were 'valuable in the government’s prosecution.' Gold was sentenced to two months in federal prison in June."

“I’ve suffered immensely at the hands of the DOJ for a year and a half," said Straka in his post, according to NBC. "The reason why these documents were leaked is because I didn’t go away and crawl in a hole and die after my case the way they wanted me to. I’m still not going to now.”

“We need to be force multipliers,” Borrelli told the crowd in Tempe Saturday. “We need to have people camped on unmanned drop boxes and camp on those and keep an eye on them and take down that data, license plates, pictures and so on and so forth.”

Borrelli’s call to action is similar to one made earlier this year by Sen. Kelly Townsend, R-Mesa, who praised “vigilantes” who intended to spy on dropboxes; she implored them to use trail cameras and to get people’s license plate numbers. The calls to action stems from allegations made in a highly flawed film by controversial filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza.

And Mark Finchem, one of the state’s loudest proponents of baseless election fraud claims who is running to oversee elections as secretary of state, urged attendees to show up at their local polling places on Tuesday to monitor voters and watch for suspicious activity.

“Stand 75 feet away from the entrance of the polls,” Finchem, who is running for Secretary of State, said. “The mere fact that you are there watching scares the hell out of them.”

There is an official process for election observers at polling locations. Observers must be authorized by a political party. Only one can be at each polling site, and they cannot interact with voters.

Hah! Clearly actual laws no longer matter to these people. The law is what they say it is.

"On January 19, law enforcement searched Caldwell's residence pursuant to a search warrant issued in the Western District of Virginia. One record law enforcement recovered was a document entitled, 'Death List,'" said the indictment from the Justice Department.

In a superseding indictment, Caldwell was charged with seditious conspiracy.

In a new court filing, Caldwell revealed the names were Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, two election workers who were so terrorized by Trump supporters they went into hiding.

Am hearing on the tee vee that "chatter" about violence against the FBI is high.  The question is when some not too mentally stable person or people are emboldened to act. Cincinnati?
