Jared L. Wise, the former FBI agent charged for his role in the Jan. 6 attack, was … get this … the supervisory special agent in charge of Homegrown Violent Extremism for the FBI New York Field Office’s Joint Terrorism Task Force from 2014-17, NBC reports.

After Wise left the FBI, he joined … get this again! … Project Veritas, the NYT reports:

• “Mr. Wise later joined the conservative group Project Veritas under the supervision of a former British spy, Richard Seddon, who had been recruited by the security contractor Erik Prince to train operatives to infiltrate trade unions, Democratic congressional campaigns and other targets.”

• “At Project Veritas, according to a former employee with direct knowledge of his employment, Mr. Wise used the code name Bendghazi and trained at the Prince family ranch in Wyoming with other recruits.”

• Mr. Wise was among a group of Project Veritas operatives who were assigned to infiltrate teacher unions in Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan and Kentucky, according to the former employee.

Wise’s time with Project Veritas was short-lived. He left in mid-2018, Project Veritas told the NYT.

Two staff members at Rep. Gerry Connolly’s (D-VA) district office in Fairfax were attacked by a person armed with a baseball bat on Monday, according to a statement released by the congressman.

“This morning, an individual entered my District Office armed with a baseball bat and asked for me before committing an act of violence against two members of my staff. The individual is in police custody and both members of my team were transferred to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries,” Connolly said in a Monday statement.

The real Deep State, and it's effing scary.

Federal prosecutors on Friday highlighted a nexus between a top intelligence official in D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department and Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio, a relationship which continued from July 2019 through the Jan. 6 insurrection.

Former Metropolitan Police Department officer Shane Lamond, who supervised the intelligence branch of the department’s homeland security bureau, faces four counts stemming from allegations that he fed information to Tarrio about law enforcement investigations into him and then lied about it to federal agents.

An attorney for Lamond didn’t immediately return our request for comment. But the indictment lays out multiple situations in which Lamond allegedly initiated contact with Tarrio, feeding him sensitive information about investigations into the Proud Boys and Tarrio specifically.

At times, Lamond apparently suggests that he sympathizes with Tarrio politically.

After the November 2020 election was called, Lamond allegedly wrote to Tarrio saying, “Hey brother, sad, sad news today. You all planning anything?”

“Yep,” Tarrio replied.

One hour later, Lamond allegedly wrote to Tarrio that the pair should switch to an encrypted messaging app because social media accounts “belonging to your people are talking about mobilizing and ‘taking back the country.'”

Lamond was put on leave in February 2022 due to suspicions over his ties to the Proud Boys. At the time, Tarrio told reporters that Lamont would tell the group where counterprotestors were staging.

But at Tarrio’s seditious conspiracy trial this year, defense attorneys for the Proud Boys chief revealed several of the texts between the two as part of an effort to show that the group was cooperating with — and not attempting to overthrow — governmental authority.

That’s the nightmare fuel which permeates the texts, however: the prospect of polarized law enforcement officers siding with a violent right-wing street mob.

Texts released in the Friday indictment suggest that Lamond portrayed his relationship with Tarrio to his superiors as that of “source” and handler. But at times, he tried to downplay the prospect of violence from the Proud Boys.

At a December 2020 protest, Tarrio burned a Black Lives Matter flag belonging to a local church.

That sparked a D.C. police investigation into which Lamond could purportedly see — and about which he allegedly fed information to Tarrio.

After the Proud Boys leader asked if they would “make a stink of it,” Lamond allegedly replied that he told the department’s criminal investigation division that the Proud Boys group was “made up of a lot of Latinos and Blacks so not a racist thing.”

“If anything I said its political but then I drew attention to the Trump and American flags that were taken by Antifa and set on fire,” he purportedly wrote. “I said all those would have to be classified as hate crimes too.”

Prosecutors say that Lamond went on to provide critical details about the investigation to Tarrio, including what evidence investigators had gathered tying Tarrio to the burning, when a charging decision was to be made and, critically, that a warrant for Tarrio’s arrest had been issued.

Right-wing domestic terrorist and Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes sentenced to 18 years in prison for seditious conspiracy. Of course I full expect the next Republican president will pardon him.

The founder of the far-right Oath Keepers group has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for his role in a seditious conspiracy to disrupt the electoral count, the stiffest punishment to date to stem from the violent assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

A jury in Washington, D.C., convicted Stewart Rhodes last November of the politically charged sedition charge and multiple other felonies. Given the rare nature of the charge, his prison term could influence any sentence Enrique Tarrio, the former chairman of the far-right Proud Boys group will face on the same charge later this summer.

"You, sir, present an ongoing threat and peril to this country...and to the very fabric of our democracy," said U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta.

Rhodes, a graduate of Yale Law School, pledged to appeal his conviction and sentence. His decision to testify in his own defense last year backfired after prosecutor Kathryn Rakoczy drew him out on inconsistencies in his account of his actions leading up to the Capitol siege and his penchant for conspiracy theories.

During the trial, the Justice Department presented the jury with thousands of messages from Rhodes and other Oath Keepers before, during and after the events of Jan. 6, including Rhodes' comments that "we aren't getting through this without a civil war" and "the final defense is us and our rifles."

Unlike several of his followers and co-defendants, Rhodes never entered the Capitol building, instead presiding over the action like a general on the battlefield, prosecutor Jeffrey Nestler told jurors last year.

An Arkansas man who propped his feet on a desk in then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office in a widely circulated photo from the U.S. Capitol riot was sentenced Wednesday to more than four years in prison.

Richard "Bigo" Barnett became one of the faces of the Jan. 6 riot by supporters of then-President Donald Trump, and U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper said in announcing that sentence that Barnett seemed at times to enjoy the notoriety.

"All the folks who follow 'Bigo' need to know the actions of Jan. 6 cannot be repeated without some serious repercussions," Cooper said, alluding to the media attention and social media following Barnett attracted after the riot.

The 54-month sentence for Barnett, a retired firefighter from Gravette, Arkansas, comes after he was convicted at trial on eight counts, including felony charges of civil disorder and obstruction of an official proceeding, in this case a Jan. 6, 2021, session of Congress to certify Joe Biden's victory over Trump in the 2020 presidential election.

Two men, one of them an active-duty Marine, were arrested Wednesday for allegedly firebombing a Planned Parenthood clinic in Costa Mesa, California, last year.

Chance Brannon, 23, was stationed at the nearby Camp Pendleton, according to a press release from federal prosecutors. He and his alleged accomplice, 21-year-old Tibet Ergul, were charged with using an explosive or fire to damage property and affect interstate commerce.

Daniel Rodriguez, the man who attacked then-Washington, DC, police officer Michael Fanone with an electroshock weapon in the neck during the US Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, was sentenced Wednesday to 12 and a half years in prison.

Rodriguez, 40, had pleaded guilty to four counts in February, including conspiracy, assault with a dangerous weapon and obstruction of an official proceeding.

As Rodriguez exited the courtroom Wednesday, he defiantly shouted that “Trump won!” repeating the same lie that ultimately culminated in the Capitol attack.

During Wednesday’s sentencing, Judge Amy Berman Jackson called Rodriguez as a “one-man army” who, in the lead-up to January 6, called for “blood in the streets,” revolution, and violence against Donald Trump’s enemies in a Telegram group chat he created.

Jackson, who called Rodriguez’s attack on Fanone a “horrific assault,” noted that while Rodriguez was trying to stop the peaceful transfer of power, Fanone “was protecting the very foundation of democracy.”

“He was protecting America,” she said.

Before the judge handed down her sentence, Rodriguez blamed his actions on his difficult upbringing, disparities between socioeconomic classes in American society, and the violent protests in the summer of 2020 in a rambling, half-hour speech.

“I did what I thought was right,” Rodriguez, who called himself “an American Supremacist,” said of his actions on January 6.

Fanone, who addressed the court Wednesday, said he didn’t “give a sh*t” about Rodriguez. “He ceased to exist a long time ago.”

“My career, my friends and my faith in the justice system” were extinguished in the January 6 attack, Fanone said.

When I saw the folks at the 1/6 shindig and later in the dock I realized that nut jobs have been released and empowered by the rhetoric and behavior of the former president. All those folks (not the organized Proud Boys, Oath Keepers who are mercenaries) that drove hours and hours to DC in order to stomp around the Capitol, push through barricades, brandishing flag poles as weapons are unleashed. They will show up in their own states to harass people at polling places, destroy ballot drop boxes, make threatening calls to elections offices and officials, harangue election officials to hand count ballots etc. October and November will be tense and, for some, dangerous.

The FBI has accused Paul Faye Sr. of trying to sell an unregistered AK-47 suppressor.

The FBI says Faye admitted to wanting to launch an attack on the southern border.

Faye's "war room" had multiple firearms, such as AR-15 rifles and a shotgun.

A self-touted militia sniper was arrested by the FBI and accused of trying to sell an undercover agent an unregistered suppressor for an AK-47.

Wait there's more !!

Faye subsequently told three undercover agents during a meeting in April that he believed the federal government was intentionally letting in illegal immigrants because it would benefit the authorities, per the document.

A Virginia militia (Why do we give them the dignity of that name? They're a bunch of guys playing army.) got concerned that someone who wanted to join their group was either a government spy or too unstable for them to include. 

Vane, 42, was a former Marine reservist with an intelligence background whose loose talk about explosives and Russian government connections unnerved his fellow militia members. The Kekoas kicked him out in early March, suspecting he was either a government informant trying to set them up or an unstable militant heading for trouble — either way, a dangerous liability.

But the decision posed a conundrum: How does a group that doesn’t trust the government warn authorities about a potential threat?

They turned to the independent journalist Ford Fischer, whose News2Share outlet is known for coverage of activist and militant movements. Fischer, who posted a 34-minute YouTube video and long thread on X detailing the Kekoas’ removal of Vane, told The Washington Post that such a public warning was “unprecedented” in his seven years of chronicling the shadowy militia world.

Two members, using their real names, provided Fischer screenshots of private chats and details about internal operations in a blow-by-blow account of the weeks leading up to Vane’s ouster. The result was a rare look at the self-policing and increased vigilance inside militia-style groups following the Justice Department’s landmark seditious conspiracy cases against extremists who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Actually the more interesting part of the article is about how militias and other such groups responded to 1/6. This particular group broke away from the "Boogaloo" group because they don't want to appear to be part of an anti government organization.  They don't collect dues or have chapters. They're people who are libertarians and who seek to complement the Constitution with their activities like wandering around with their AR 15s at 2nd Amendment rallies.

Here's a different form of domestic terrorism...use of rumor and conspiracy theory to interfere with disaster relief in a North Carolina town.

Hurricane Helene had just cut off this already isolated foothill town from everything: power, water, information. Paralyzed, the only thing that residents Carin Harris and Hilary Yoxall could think to do was post up outside their Ingles supermarket and hand out something warm. Soon, donations began to pour in, and a makeshift supplies distribution center emerged from a parking lot off the main two-lane road.

Then everything got more complicated.

A group called Veterans on Patrol showed up in Rutherford County late on the night of Oct. 11, just four people with no supplies. But their leader, Lewis Arthur, came with a lot of promises and a big vision, which he said was sent from God: a three-year plan to help this lakeside community and others around here bounce back, according to Yoxall and Arthur.
At first, it did seem like a godsend, Yoxall, Harris and other residents said. They started organizing the piles of diapers, boxes of canned food and mounds of winter clothes. But as soon as Yoxall, a retired Army nurse, and Arthur got to talking, and he started telling her about his work fighting cartels at the border, about his need for armed security, she got a bad feeling.

“There’s something wrong here,” she told another longtime resident and fellow organizer.

What she and others didn’t know yet was that Veterans on Patrol is an anti-government group steeped in conspiracy theories and that it has a well-documented history of embedding in communities to launch missions related to migrants or purported child trafficking, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Western States Center, two watchdog groups.
And that the group was motivated to come to this small town because its members believed that the government was using the hurricane to move people here off lithium-rich land and stop them from getting it back, according to the group’s posts on Telegram, the messaging service.

“Hurricane Helene was an act of war perpetuated by the United States Military”; a “land grab” responsible for “murdering hundreds, if not thousands, of Americans,” the group said on Oct. 3. That same day, it launched its disaster deployment operation, stating that it was “coming to the aid of those who will not sell, have stolen, or be restricted their property” and to replace the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

And others in a similar vein have shown up in North Carolina towns.  Where do these folks get the money to do this sort of thing? I assume they have lives and probably jobs somewhere that they are leaving to do this sort of activity.  And I wonder if this is happening in Florida or did they just focus on North Carolina because mass weather disaster like this is pretty unusual so residents have no contact or knowledge about how disaster relief works.
