Teddy Joseph Von Nukem, one of the most prominent faces lit by the glow of tiki torches in what became the lasting image of the 2017 white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, killed himself as he was due to face criminal trial last month.

The 35-year-old skipped out on his first day of trial for a drug trafficking charge in Arizona on the morning of Jan. 30, according to court records. At the very moment a federal judge was issuing a warrant for his arrest, Von Nukem was actually still at his home in Missouri, where he had walked out in the snow behind the hay shed and shot himself.

The details were listed in an autopsy report obtained exclusively by The Daily Beast on Tuesday.

“Suicide notes were found at the scene, left for law enforcement and his children, however handwriting was somewhat inconsistent,” the coroner’s report states.

Von Nukem gained notoriety for attending the Aug. 12, 2017 hate speech rally that aggressively revived a nativist movement in the United States. He glorified the violence, and researchers of domestic extremism suspect he was a key figure in a brutal beating of a black man that day.

Another terrorist supporter in the ranks of our police.

A police officer frequently provided Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio with internal information about law enforcement operations in the weeks before other members of his far-right extremist group stormed the U.S. Capitol, according to messages shown Wednesday at the trial of Tarrio and four associates.

A federal prosecutor showed jurors a string of messages that Metropolitan Police Lt. Shane Lamond and Tarrio privately exchanged in the run-up to a mob’s attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Lamond, an intelligence officer for the city’s police department, was responsible for monitoring groups like the Proud Boys when they came to Washington for protests.

Less than three weeks before the Jan. 6 riot, Lamond warned Tarrio that the FBI and U.S. Secret Service were “all spun up” over talk on an Infowars internet show that the Proud Boys planned to dress up as supporters of President Joe Biden on the Democrat’s inauguration day.

Justice Department prosecutor Conor Mulroe asked a government witness, FBI Special Agent Peter Dubrowski, how common it is for law enforcement to disclose internal information in that fashion.

“I’ve never heard of it,” Dubrowski said.

Tarrio was arrested in Washington two days before the Capitol attack and charged with burning a Black Lives Matter banner taken from a historic Black church during a protest in December 2020. He was released from jail before the riot and wasn’t in Washington on Jan. 6.

In a message to Tarrio on Dec. 25, 2020, Lamond said Metropolitan Police Department investigators had asked him to identify Tarrio from a photograph. He warned Tarrio that police may be seeking a warrant for his arrest.

Later, on the day of his arrest, Tarrio posted a message to other Proud Boys leaders that said, “The warrant was just signed.”

Before the trial started in January, Tarrio’s attorneys said Lamond’s testimony would be crucial for his defense, supporting Tarrio’s claims that he was looking to avoid violence. Mulroe said Lamond has asserted his Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination.

A man is facing federal and state charges in connection to a series of bombing incidents across Fresno.

On Tuesday, police said that 44-year-old Scott Anderson was arrested for seven incidents that started on December 13.

Authorities say that one of the incidents happened at the Fresno County probation office, where a bomb went off inside one of the patrol units. Six of the incidents involved cars, and the seventh involved a mailbox.

During their investigation, police say they discovered there could be ties between Anderson and a White supremacist group.

"It became apparent very quickly that the suspect or suspects in this case were professing in skill level of making bombs and also their frequency," said Balderrama.

Balderrama says three separate locations related to Anderson were identified and search warrants were written, but he says Anderson left Fresno on February 23.

The next day, Anderson was arrested by deputies in Riverside, along with his partner.

Due to the nature of the arrest, nearby residents had to be evacuated as a precaution.

After Anderson's arrest, a series of search warrants led to four more arrests for a number of drug and firearms violations.

"The people of the state of California will be filing, have filed a criminal complaint alleging 4 different defendants for the actions we have been speaking about that occurred in January and February of 2023," said Fresno County District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp.

One of those four, identified as Frank Rocha, was also charged with possession of bomb-making materials.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel was targeted by a “heavily armed” man threatening to harm Jewish members of the state government, according to a criminal complaint unsealed in federal court on Wednesday.

Jack Eugene Carpenter III is accused of tweeting various threats against Nessel and other public officials on Feb. 17. He’s been charged with using interstate communications to make a threat of injury or death.

“I’m heading back to Michigan now threatening to carry out the punishment of death to anyone that is jewish in the Michigan govt if they don’t leave, or confess, and now that kind of problem. Because I can Legally do that, right?” he allegedly tweeted under the handle @tempered_reason, according to charging documents.

Carpenter allegedly owned three handguns (one of which he allegedly stole from his girlfriend), a 12-gauge shotgun, and two hunting rifles—including a military-style weapon.

The FBI filed the criminal complaint about the threats on Feb. 18.

Merrick Garland says out loud what DHS figured out something like 15 years ago.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said on Wednesday that white supremacists are currently the “most dangerous and most lethal” domestic terror group in the United States, an assessment that falls in line with recent reports on the threat that far-right extremists present.

During the hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Garland braced questions on multiple topics, as Republicans on the panel seized the opportunity to elevate right-wing criticism of the DOJ. Questions were focused on, among other things, the Justice Department’s investigation(s) into former president Donald Trump, the rising fentanyl crisis, Fox News’ grievances about the U.S.-Mexico border, and attacks on pregnancy centers and abortion clinics.

After Garland was accused by Republicans of “selective prosecution on abortion issues,” Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) stepped in to defend the AG, arguing that anti-abortion extremists have been responsible for “11 murders, 26 attempted murders, 42 bombings, 194 arsons, and thousands of other criminal incidents” since 1977. She then asked Garland whether the DOJ’s prosecutorial focus should be on “the most violent acts.”

To this, the attorney general agreed, noting that the Justice Department prosecutes violent acts “without respect to ideology.”

Former Vice President Mike Pence has filed a motion asking a judge to block a federal grand jury subpoena for his testimony related to January 6 on the grounds that he is protected by the Constitution’s Speech or Debate Clause, according to a source familiar with the filing.

Pence had publicly signaled that he planned to resist the subpoena, arguing it was “unconstitutional and unprecedented.” His legal team filed the motion Friday night, the same day former President Donald Trump’s attorneys asked a judge to block Pence from speaking to a grand jury about certain matters covered by executive privilege.

The Pence motion – filed as part of sealed proceedings – seeks to stop testimony pertaining to his legislative functions around January 6, which could potentially include a broad swath of testimony. It is separate from Trump’s motion, which argues that the former president can shield former aides from sharing internal communications.

Special counsel Jack Smith is seeking documents and testimony related to January 6, 2021, and wants Pence to testify about his interactions with Trump leading up to the 2020 election and the day of the attack on the US Capitol.

But the former vice president asserts that because he was also acting as president of the Senate that day, he is shielded by the Speech or Debate Clause, which protects lawmakers from certain law enforcement actions targeted at their legislative duties.

Pence—Once Again—Critiques Trump In Public While Helping Him In Private

Former Vice President Mike Pence criticized Donald Trump’s role in the Jan. 6 attack and recent attempts to rewrite what happened that day during a Saturday night speech.

“President Trump was wrong,” Pence said at the annual Gridiron Club Dinner in Washington, D.C. “I had no right to overturn the election and his reckless words endangered my family and everyone at the Capitol that day, and I know that history will hold Donald Trump accountable.”

Pence has rebuked the former president for his actions relating to the events of Jan. 6 before. But his renewed criticism comes as he is eyeing a possible 2024 presidential bid.

It also comes just days after he asked a judge to block a federal grand jury subpoena for his testimony in special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into the insurrection and other potential wrongdoings by Trump.

Pence is arguing that the subpoena asking for his testimony is “unconstitutional and unprecedented” and that, as he was the president of the Senate, he is protected from testifying about Jan. 6 under the Constitution’s Speech or Debate Clause.

Michigan Man Arrested After YouTube Threats Against Whitmer And Biden

Randall Robert Berka II was arrested and charged with federal firearms violations after Google tipped off the feds that he was making threatening remarks on YouTube, according to news reports and court filings.

There’s a lot going on here (emphasis mine):

Investigators went to Berka’s house, in Huron County, and spoke with his mother, who said she had purchased a handgun and three long guns for her son in the past year. She said he keeps the guns, as well as ammunition and body armor, in his room at their house.

Berka was involuntarily committed for mental health treatment in 2012, court documents say, and his mental health history is what prohibits him from having a gun. His mother told investigators she didn’t think his treatments are working and that he should be arrested and imprisoned.

The YouTube rants also included threats against FBI agents and the LGBT community.

Trump blamed Pence for the violence at the Jan 6 Republican Insurrection.

Trump was reacting to Pence’s weekend comments denouncing Trump as “wrong” and predicting that history would hold the former president “accountable.”

Trump made his remarks to reporters aboard his plane en route to Iowa for a campaign appearance:

“Had he sent the votes back to the legislatures, they wouldn’t have had a problem with Jan. 6, so in many ways you can blame him for Jan. 6. …

Had he sent them back to Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, the states, I believe, number one, you would have had a different outcome. But I also believe you wouldn’t have had ‘Jan. 6’ as we call it.”

Putting “Jan. 6” in quotes is priceless.

A federal judge denied a Jan. 6 defendant’s third motion to be released from pretrial custody on Tuesday – saying he found no violations of constitutional rights at the D.C. Jail that would warrant his release.

Last month, Christopher Quaglin – a New Jersey electrician the Justice Department says is a member of the Proud Boys – filed a renewed motion for release while he prepares for his trial scheduled next month. Quaglin was one of nine men in a multi-defendant indictment field in 2021 stemming from an hours-long assault on police who were defending the U.S. Capitol Building’s Lower West Terrace Tunnel on Jan. 6, 2021. Quaglin faces felony charges of assaulting police with a dangerous weapon and inflicting bodily injury on officers for allegedly attacking police with a stolen riot shield and pepper spray.

Six of Quaglin’s co-defendants have already been found guilty of numerous charges in bench trials before U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden, and Quaglin and the remaining two defendants were scheduled to begin their own bench trial on April 10. In the meantime, however, Quaglin’s attorney Jonathon Gross wanted McFadden to release him to home detention. In a motion filed Feb. 8, Gross argued numerous factors warranted Quaglin’s release, including the length of his detention, the numerous times he’s been moved between facilities conditions at the D.C. Jail and his lack of access at the facility to evidence in his case.

On Tuesday, the judge denied Quaglin’s motion. While acknowledging there have been issues reported at the jail’s Central Detention Facility in the past, McFadden noted the U.S. Marshal’s service responded swiftly in 2021 to remove approximately 400 defendants out of the facility after a Marshals’ inspection found standing sewage and shut-off water. At the time, the Marshal’s Service found the conditions acceptable at a separate wing of the facility where Jan. 6 defendants have been held called the Central Treatment Facility.

McFadden, who served as deputy assistant attorney general in the Justice Department’s criminal division before being appointed to the federal bench by former President Donald Trump in 2017, noted that it appeared to him – far from being denied access to resources or evidence at the D.C. Jail – Jan. 6 defendants had received extraordinary accommodations to view materials in their cases. At the facility, Jan. 6 defendants have access to tablets to view the voluminous evidence in the investigation, including, if they are signed up for it, the government’s electronic evidence database.

“I’ve seen cases for over a decade now and I’ve never seen a defendant have a tablet to access discovery materials,” McFadden said, noting the D.C. Jail’s program had been developed specifically in response to Jan. 6 defendants’ concerns.

And the classic Republican refusal to take responsibility for one's own actions.

As to Quaglin’s other claims, McFadden laid his history of facility transfers at his own feet – noting he’d received “numerous incident reports” detailing aggressive and disruptive behavior by Quaglin. A Marshal’s deputy said in court Tuesday that Quaglin’s recent transfer to the D.C. Jail came after the Rappahannock Regional Jail reported he had been harassing medical staff. Addressing the length of Quaglin’s pre-trial detention, he pointed out that was “entirely of his own making.”

A 38-year-old New Jersey man who still lives with his mother was arrested in his pajamas this week and charged with making a threat to kill a Florida sheriff who recently took a forceful stand against antisemitism and other hate messages.

“I cannot wait to meet him when he gets off the plane,” Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said at a press conference on Tuesday announcing the arrest of Richard Golden of Monmouth Junction.

“Because one of the first faces he’s going to see welcoming him to the Volusia County and Volusia County Jail, the happiest place on Earth, is going to be me.”

After Chitwood spoke out about a neo-Nazi group that has targeted his community—and allegedly even put him on a hit list—Golden joined a chat about it on 4Chan and repeatedly recommended violence, the sheriff said.

“Just shoot Chitwood in the head and he stops being a problem. They have to find a new guy to be the new problem,” Golden allegedly wrote. “But shooting Chitwood in the head solves the immediate problem permanently. Just shoot Chitwood in the head—murder him.”

The Central Florida Intelligence Exchange flagged the anonymous online comments and an investigation was launched that identified Golden as the alleged author.

“They discovered that he’s anti-government, he’s anti-law enforcement, and like every other active shooter we come across is a marginalized member of society who spends hours and hours and hours in these extremist chat rooms,” Chitwood said

DOJ Expects Hundreds More Jan. 6 Cases

More than 1,000 additional people could still face charges in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol, according to a letter to the DC federal court from the US attorney in Washington.

The one-page letter, which was reviewed by Bloomberg News, was sent late last year to the chief judge and hasn’t been previously reported.

Newly released video of the Capitol attack shows just how close rioters came to a senior GOP senator who was third in line for the presidency on Jan. 6, 2021.

The footage, released after media requests to access videos used in connection with a Jan. 6 criminal case, shows the apparent evacuation of Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) from the Senate chamber as a uniformed officer separates him and his security detail from the first wave of rioters who had breached the building. Those rioters were led by Proud Boy Dominic Pezzola, who used a riot shield to shatter a Senate window and ignite the breach of the building near the chamber.

Grassley’s caught-on-tape proximity to the pro-Trump rioters adds new dissonance to Fox News host Tucker Carlson’s on-air minimization of the siege — a portrayal that palpably split Senate and House Republicans.

The video, taken by a rioter who entered the Capitol moments after the breach and released in a case separate from Pezzola’s, shows the Proud Boy gazing past the police officer at the evacuating senator, though it’s unclear if he recognized Grassley. As the camera pans, Pezzola is shown speaking on his phone before turning away from the scene.

That first wave of the mob — which also included Jacob Chansley, known as the “QAnon Shaman” — would moments later follow Capitol Police officer Eugene Goodman up a flight of stairs to come within feet of the Senate chamber in a now-famous confrontation.

The first chapter of the black-and-white PDF magazine begins with an ominous warning. Over four dense pages, the anonymous writers paint a picture of “an anti-tech revolution, beginning with the annihilation of the U.S. energy grid.”

“The horrific effects of a nationwide blackout cannot be understated. Hospitals would fail. … Financial collapse,” the magazine reads, continuing to detail traffic chaos, dwindling supplies of clean water and spreading disease before concluding that a successful attack targeting key points on the electrical grid would lead to “the collapse of the system … chaos, agony, and death”

The magazine was obtained by TPM in a chat group on the encrypted app Telegram dedicated to “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski. Along with the breathless depiction of a widespread blackout, it included a precise list of the locations of “THE MOST CRITICALLY IMPORTANT ELECTRIC SUBSTATIONS IN THE UNITED STATES.”

This apocalyptic brand of extremist rhetoric — and the focus, specifically, on targeting substations — is part of a growing phenomenon that has captured the attention of both the far right and law enforcement. The trend has resulted in a dramatic rise in attacks that have left tens of thousands of people without power. Experts have attributed the wave to the digital spread of right-wing accelerationist ideology, which aims to hasten societal collapse, and materials like this magazine that encourage and provide instructions for targeting the grid.

Looks like domestic terrorist Amon Bundy might be going back to prison, where he belongs.

The judge overseeing an Idaho hospital’s lawsuit against right-wing agitator Ammon Bundy has called for his arrest after his repeated failures to participate in the case.

Ada County Judge Lynn Norton issued a civil arrest warrant for Bundy on Tuesday, the Idaho Capital Sun reported. Setting Bundy’s bail at $10,000, the judge reportedly determined that there is probable cause that Bundy has committed contempt.

Bundy was sued for harassment and defamation in May of 2022 by St. Luke’s Health System over what the hospital calls a “knowingly dishonest and baseless smear campaign” that falsely accused employees and doctors of kidnapping, trafficking, and murdering children in Idaho.

There’s a new filing out in the Jack Teixeira case, written up here by the Times. It’s a government motion to keep Teixeira locked up while awaiting trial. The government argues, unsurprisingly, that Teixeira is a major flight risk and that he still knows lots of information that could cause grave damage if shared with hostile foreign powers. But what is new and newsworthy if not entirely surprising is that Teixeira’s record suggests he was carrying most of the red flags we’d expect for a future mass shooter. You can see the filing here.

As the government filing explains, Teixeira was suspended from high school in 2018 when a classmate “overheard him make remarks about weapons, including Molotov cocktails, guns at the school and racial threats.” Later that year he was denied a firearms identification card because of the local police department’s concerns about his threats and suspension at the high school.

In addition to a steady stream of comments about violence and murder, Teixeira also had some fantasy and/or plan to carry out some kind of mass shooting event with an “assassination van.” He sought advice about the best kind of rifle to use from the back of an SUV or what he termed “mobile gun trucks” and “[o]ff-road” and “good assassination vehicles.” It was apparently with this kind of hardware in mind that he said if he had his way he would “kill a [expletive] ton of people” in an effort at “culling the weak minded.”

Finally, he had hardware to back up these fantasies/plans. He had extensive arsenals at both his primary home and that of his father, what the government calls a “virtual arsenal of weapons, including bolt-action rifles, rifles, AR and AK-style weapons and a bazooka.” At his main home these were contained in a gun locker next to his bed, in addition to stashes of ammunition, “tactical pouches on his dresser” and some kind of silencer type device. Other military style gear in his home he apparently tried to throw away shortly before his arrest.

The lawyers said the probation department has recommended Teixeira be released to his father, a former corrections officer whose guns have been removed from his home.

Proud Boys go down.

Former Proud Boys chairman Henry “Enrique” Tarrio and three other members of the extremist group were found guilty Thursday of seditious conspiracy in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Over nearly 15 weeks of trial, prosecutors alleged that the Proud Boys on trial saw themselves as Donald Trump’s “army.” Inspired by his directive to “stand by” during a September 2020 presidential debate and mobilized by his December 2020 call for a “wild” protest when Congress met to certify the election, prosecutors said the men sought to keep Trump in power through violence.

Defense attorneys for Tarrio fought back by blaming the former president, saying prosecutors made the five defendants scapegoats for an unplanned riot triggered by Trump’s incitement of angry supporters.
The jury, which began hearing testimony in January, deliberated about 30 hours over seven days in Washington.

So now Oath Keepers and Proud Boys have been convicted and others pled guilty.

The verdict concludes the last of three Jan. 6 seditious conspiracy trials, the most high-profile cases stemming from the largest prosecution in U.S. history. In November and January, six members of the extremist Oath Keepers movement were convicted of the historically rare and politically weighty crime of seditious conspiracy in the assault, including Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes.

Four others members of the two groups previously pleaded guilty to seditious conspiracy. Three others were acquitted but convicted of obstructing the congressional session.

Jared L. Wise, the former FBI agent charged for his role in the Jan. 6 attack, was … get this … the supervisory special agent in charge of Homegrown Violent Extremism for the FBI New York Field Office’s Joint Terrorism Task Force from 2014-17, NBC reports.

After Wise left the FBI, he joined … get this again! … Project Veritas, the NYT reports:

• “Mr. Wise later joined the conservative group Project Veritas under the supervision of a former British spy, Richard Seddon, who had been recruited by the security contractor Erik Prince to train operatives to infiltrate trade unions, Democratic congressional campaigns and other targets.”

• “At Project Veritas, according to a former employee with direct knowledge of his employment, Mr. Wise used the code name Bendghazi and trained at the Prince family ranch in Wyoming with other recruits.”

• Mr. Wise was among a group of Project Veritas operatives who were assigned to infiltrate teacher unions in Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan and Kentucky, according to the former employee.

Wise’s time with Project Veritas was short-lived. He left in mid-2018, Project Veritas told the NYT.
