Fascism requires an enemy and there's nobody in America quite up to the task of creating enemies out of thin air using pure lies than the right-wingers. And if you fail to gain traction on lying about your opponent then you go after their spouse or somebody else in their family. Gisele Fetterman isn't having any of it. Gawd, I love the both of them.

The wife of U.S. Sen.-elect John Fetterman of Pennsylvania said right-wing misogyny is fueling personal attacks on her by conservative news outlets and on social media.

“The right-wing hates women,” Gisele Barreto Fetterman told The New Republic magazine in a new interview.

“They especially hate strong women, and I think that’s what you’re seeing,” said Gisele, whose Democratic husband currently is Pennsylvania’s lieutenant governor.

“The fact that a spouse of a senator-elect has been attacked nonstop for the past 24 hours and everyone’s OK with it and everyone thinks it’s normal ... It’s not normal,” she said after her first day of spousal orientation on Capitol Hill.

“Since entering the Capitol for training, my inbox has been completely filled with threats and horrible things,” she told the magazine.

“And that’s because I’ve been [on a] loop on Fox News,” Gisele said.

“Hopefully it’s not like this forever ... and hopefully it’s not like this for the next young Latina or person of color or spouse who enters this space,” the Brazil-born Fetterman said.

How could anybody not know this already?

Barstool blogger Francis Ellis slammed Fox News hosts in an apparent hot mic discussion during Tuesday’s episode of the Barstool Rundown podcast.

Ellis talked about his appearance on Jesse Watters Primetime the night prior, according to audio first published by Mediaite, which noted that the clip was posted online by Barstool as part of an “editing error” and removed soon after.

Ellis told co-host Adam Ferrone that he felt “disappointed” in his appearance on Watters’ show, and then recalled a discussion with his wife about it.

“She was like, ‘Let’s be honest, like, do you want to be working with these fucking people?’” Ellis said. “She was like, ‘I watched the rest of his show—he’s a fucking joke.’”

Ellis then brought up Tucker Carlson, who periodically interviews Barstool founder Dave Portnoy on his 8 p.m. show, having done so as recently as two weeks ago.

“And then like, Tucker comes on and just screams,” Ellis said. “It’s so weird.” After some back-and-forth with others in the room, he added: “They’re just trafficking in hate.”

Ellis also said he regretted some of his comments on Watters’ show.

“I think last night I went into a place that I shouldn’t have gone to,” admitted Ellis, who was fired from Barstool in 2019 after slut-shaming a college student who was murdered. “Because last night I was like, ‘Yes, the Democrats are like eating children beneath pizza shops.’ There are people watching that who don’t know that I’m fucking with them. They’re like, ‘Finally, a young, handsome person is saying it!'”

“I’m not here to fix people,” he continued, “but I’m certainly not here to like further divide the country.”

Interesting what someone says under oath:

On Nov. 30, 2020, Sean Hannity hosted Sidney Powell on his prime-time Fox News program. As she had in many other interviews around that time — on Fox and elsewhere in right-wing media — Ms. Powell, a former federal prosecutor, spun wild conspiracy theories about what she said was “corruption all across the country, in countless districts,” in a plot to steal re-election from the president, Donald J. Trump.

At the center of this imagined plot were machines from Dominion Voting Systems, which Ms. Powell claimed ran an algorithm that switched votes for Mr. Trump to votes for Joseph R. Biden Jr. Dominion machines, she insisted, were being used “to trash large batches of votes.”

Mr. Hannity interrupted her with a gentle question that had been circulating among election deniers, despite a lack of supporting proof: Why were Democrats silencing whistle-blowers who could prove this fraud?

Did Mr. Hannity believe any of this?

“I did not believe it for one second.”

In Delaware Superior Court on Wednesday, Dominion’s lawyers argued that they had obtained ample evidence to make that case.

One lawyer for Dominion said that “not a single Fox witness” so far had produced anything supporting the various false claims about the company that were uttered repeatedly on the network. And in some cases, other high-profile hosts and senior executives echoed Mr. Hannity’s doubts about what Mr. Trump and his allies like Ms. Powell were saying, according to the Dominion lawyer, Stephen Shackelford.

This included Meade Cooper, who oversees prime-time programming for Fox News, and the prime-time star Tucker Carlson, Mr. Shackelford said.

“Many of the highest-ranking Fox people have admitted under oath that they never believed the Dominion lies,” he said, naming both Ms. Cooper and Mr. Carlson.

Mr. Shackelford described how Mr. Carlson had “tried to squirm out of it at his deposition” when asked about what he really believed.

Another previously unknown detail emerged on Wednesday about what was going on inside the Fox universe in those frantic weeks after the election. A second lawyer representing Dominion, Justin Nelson, told Judge Davis about evidence obtained by Dominion showing that an employee of the Fox Corporation, the parent company of Fox News, had tried to intervene with the White House to stop Ms. Powell. According to Mr. Nelson, that employee called the fraud claims “outlandish” and pressed Mr. Trump’s staff to get rid of Ms. Powell, who was advising the president on filing legal challenges to the results.

Sadly, we may not see everything:

A second issue was whether certain evidence that Dominion has used against Fox in its court filings — including emails among Fox employees and a page from a deposition in which someone from Fox describes the journalistic processes of one of the network’s programs — should be made public.

Throughout the case, Fox has asked the court to keep almost everything in the case pertaining to its inner workings under seal. A third lawyer for Dominion, Davida Brook, argued on Wednesday that the public had a fundamental right to see what it had filed with the court in the interest of fostering the openness that a democracy requires.

Judge Davis disagreed, ruling that the evidence would stay under seal. But he admonished the lawyers that neither party in the case should be overly aggressive in trying to keep facts in the case confidential.

I am frustrated because this article doesn't explain what the hearing it discuses is.  I doubt it's a summary judgment motion where one party says there are no facts in dispute and only a question on the law as it applies to facts remains.

Faux, in classic Faux fashion, has gone quiet about George Santos.

Republican congressman-elect George Santos has come under intense fire over revelations that he seemingly fabricated much of his biography.

Several media outlets, including The Daily Beast, have reported that Santos apparently lied about his religion, places of employment, college degrees, and residence, among other claims.

While the media spotlight on Santos has grown increasingly bright this week, conservative cable giant Fox News has all but ignored the growing controversy since The New York Times published its investigation of the GOP politician on Monday.

Of course, this is far from the first time the network has largely turned a blind eye to a story with inconvenient facts for its right-wing audience. In fact, it’s become something of a feature for Fox.

But prior to the burgeoning scandal that may cost Santos his House seat, Fox News had presented Santos as a rising star of the Republican Party. Besides regularly featuring him on its airwaves before and after the midterm elections, the network’s website published multiple “exclusive” stories fawning over Santos’ “historic” electoral victory and giving him space to call himself the “full embodiment of the American dream.”

Then, more than a month after Santos’ win in a Biden-held New York district helped Republicans secure a narrow majority in the House, The New York Times reported that much of his resume did not add up.

The Times was unable to find any records that he worked at either Goldman Sachs or Citigroup, the animal charity he claimed to run doesn’t appear to exist, and there is no evidence he graduated from Baruch College, let alone attended the school. Records show he was evicted from multiple properties over unpaid rent, though he asserted he was a landlord. The Times also revealed he did not list any properties on his financial disclosures.

And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Hannity is whining about the dysfunctional Republicans, a group he helped more than most come to power.

In fact, Hannity said the conservative infighting looked more to him like a circus.

“House Republicans now are on the verge of becoming a total clown show if they’re not careful,” Hannity said. “But despite the cheering and elation from Democrats and the mob and the media, it’s not a dire situation ― yet.”

"Becoming" a total clown show? Dude, you and your party passed that mark in 2016.

For the first time in a century, the vote to select a new Speaker of the House advanced beyond a single ballot on Tuesday. Yet according to Fox News’ Greg Gutfeld, the Capitol Hill ordeal being televised on nearly every major news channel was much ado about nothing.

Speaking on The Five, the significance of Rep. Kevin McCarthy failing to acquire a majority vote after three ballots was apparently lost on Gutfeld, who struggled to make a coherent argument against its newsworthiness.

“Speaking of drama, you know the difference between that last vote one hundred years ago and this one? This one’s on TV. What are we doing? If this was relegated to C-SPAN, we wouldn’t even know it existed,” Gutfeld exclaimed, prompting agreement from co-host Jeanine Pirro.

“But because it’s on our shows now, they are like, ‘Okay, this is for my future. I’m going to be like, I need to do this to make the people on Twitter happy... or [so] my buddies on television will invite me more often, because I’m seen as feisty,’” Gutfled continued, not making clear who exactly he was referring to.

Gutfeld seemed discouraged after just one day of a GOP-controlled House, commenting later that “it’s like the Republicans read a book by the Democrats saying how to really screw up your party.”

To be fair a House that has a Republican majority really isn't as big of an issue than one controlled by people who actually want to use their positions to take care of America's business.

Faux News is gobbling up the bogus Republican "investigations" as expected. Also the MAGAfication of Chuck GrAssley continues.

Thursday marked just the second day of the GOP-led House hearings on the alleged “weaponization” of the federal government against conservatives, and Fox News host Jesse Watters is already demanding that “someone” end up in jail.

Watters began his rant on The Five by citing testimony earlier in the day by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), who alleged that “whistleblower disclosures” he obtained show “voluminous evidence with respect to potential criminal conduct” by Hunter Biden, whose financial records and family correspondence Republicans are seeking.

“And no one’s even talking about it!” Watters complained on the network that routinely mentions the president’s son. “You want to know why? Because everybody already knows that! Everybody already knows all of this stuff! So, what is the endgame here?”

“We get screwed, then we have a hearing,” continued the impatient host, apparently speaking for all conservatives at this point. “Nothing happens. We get screwed again. We have a hearing. Nothing happens.”

Wednesday’s hearing didn’t go so well for those anticipating the exposure of some sort of anti-conservative “censorship” by Twitter with input from the FBI—with former officials at the social media company testifying that it was actually former President Donald Trump who asked them to remove certain tweets he didn’t care for. Rolling Stone also reported during the hearing that other Republicans regularly wanted posts removed.

Still, Watters recklessly asserted that there exists an “FBI dictatorship.” He then cast a vague net of blame on “the media” for not covering “any of the substance” of the hearings thus far.

Tucker is going to get his hands on all the video from surveillance cameras in and around the Capitol courtesy of House Speaker McCarthy.  I guess this will help him create Patriot Purge Part II.  

Get ready for lots of expertly spliced together video to support his claims.  After all, we know how truthful he is from the Dominion Voting Systems quotes of his texts.  So I'm sure he wouldn't stoop to creating bits of video showing Antifa and FBI folks egging the crowd on.  Some folks will be recognizable from their black clothing + masks and maybe the FBI will be wearing their cool FBI jackets with the initials on the back like what they wear when "raiding" unfortunate folks like Roger Stone and the ex president.  Yeah right he wouldn't do that.

Even the NYT is speaking plainly about House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s devil’s bargain with Tucker Carlson for Jan. 6 security cam video: “In granting exclusive access to Jan. 6 Capitol surveillance footage to a cable news host bent on rewriting the history of the attack, the speaker effectively outsourced a politically toxic re-litigation of the riot.”

McCarthy briefly commented on the matter, but the Times wasn’t having it:

“I promised,” Mr. McCarthy said on Wednesday in a brief phone interview in which he defended his decision to grant Mr. Carlson exclusive access to the more than 40,000 hours of security footage. “I was asked in the press about these tapes, and I said they do belong to the American public. I think sunshine lets everybody make their own judgment.”

Still, the sunshine Mr. McCarthy referred to will, for now, be filtered through a very specific prism — that of Mr. Carlson, a hero of the hard right who has insinuated without evidence that the Jan. 6 attack was a “false flag” operation carried out by the government.

We mentioned yesterday that Capitol Police were not aware of Carlson’s access to the video until news reports this week, but it’s a little more specific and troubling than that, CNN reveals:

Trump-allied lawyer Sidney Powell sent Fox an email full of wild claims from a woman claiming to be a decapitated time-traveler, according to a recent court filing.

Excerpts of the message formed part of a filing from Dominion Voting Systems released on Thursday in its defamation case against Fox.

Dominion said that Powell forwarded the email to Fox personality Maria Bartiromo in November 2020, and informed Bartiromo that she'd received "evidence" about voter fraud.

This was before Powell appeared on the November 8, 2020, edition of Bartiromo's Fox Business show, "Sunday Morning Futures."

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) sent a letter to Fox Corporation Chairman Rupert Murdoch and Fox News executives on Wednesday calling on them to own up to recent evidence that the network knowingly spread conspiracy theories about the 2020 election and to admit “they were wrong to engage in such negligent behavior.”

In the two page letter, the Democratic leaders demanded that Fox executives stop their channel’s hosts from spreading lies about a stolen election, warning they could lead to “further acts of political violence.”

“As noted in your deposition released yesterday Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, and other Fox News personalities knowingly, repeatedly, and dangerously endorsed and promoted the Big Lie that Donald Trump won the 2020 presidential election,” Schumer and Jeffries wrote. “We demand that you direct Tucker Carlson and other hosts on your network to stop spreading false election narratives and admit on the air that they were wrong to engage in such negligent behavior.”

Qevin continues to desperately try to make his political propaganda machine appear legitimate. It won't, especially now that we have Tucker Carlson admitting to his lies in writing.

After days of pushback, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) finally broke his silence on the exclusive internal Jan. 6 footage access he gave to Fox News host Tucker Carlson — who spent months airing conspiracy theories about the legitimacy of the 2020 elections and the Capitol attack itself.

Responding to staunch criticism from Democrats, McCarthy told reporters on Tuesday that none of the footage will be released to Carlson’s team or be broadcasted publicly before it is screened by Capitol police to make sure it doesn’t compromise the security of the Capitol building.

“It’s many more hours of tape than we were ever told. They said at the beginning it was like 14,000 hours. There’s roughly almost 42,000 hours. We’re working through that. We work with the Capitol Police as well, so we’ll make sure security is taken care of,” McCarthy told reporters.

Carlson has had what he described on his show as “unfettered” exclusive access to more than 40,000 hours of unreleased surveillance tape for days now. And McCarthy’s remarks Tuesday come only after he’s been backed into a corner by non-stop pushback from Democrats — who argue that allowing full access to an outside party like Carlson could create security risks for the Capitol and the people who work there.

In response to the criticism about possible security breaches, McCarthy emphasized that Carlson and his team are only interested in “certain parts” of the footage, saying that the team, for example, does not want to see “exit routes.”

“They’re not interested in it. They don’t want to show that,” McCarthy said.

McCarthy added that he expects the Jan. 6 security footage to be released “as soon as possible.” But he would not elaborate on the format of such a release.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said he has “no indication” that Capitol Police screened the Jan. 6 footage that Fox News host Tucker Carlson says he is planning to air, casting doubt on House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) statement that all footage will be vetted before being released.

“I have no indication at this moment that the police have vetted that footage,” Jeffries said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “It is my hope and expectation that that will absolutely occur.”

Jeffries’ Sunday remarks come shortly after McCarthy responded to days of staunch criticism from Democrats, telling reporters last week that none of the footage will be released to Carlson’s team or be broadcasted publicly before it is screened by the Capitol Police to make sure it doesn’t compromise the security of the Capitol building.

An interesting look at Faux News by TPM.

The evidence emerging from the Dominion lawsuit against Fox News has the quality of liberal fever dreams. What’s the worst you can possibly imagine about Fox? What’s the most cartoonish caricature, the worst it could possibly be? Well, in these emails and texts you basically have that. Only it’s real. It’s not anyone believing the worst and giving no benefit of the doubt. This is what Fox is.

In a moment like this it’s worth stepping way, way back, not just to the beginning of Fox News in 1996 but to the beginning of the broader countermovement it was a part of and even a relatively late entry to.

Back in the 1950s and 1960s there was something historians and critics of the time called the post-war liberal consensus. It was not liberal in ways we’d recognize today. Indeed, it wasn’t liberal in many ways actual liberals of the time recognized. But it did represent an important level of elite consensus about state intervention in the economy and openness to a more restrained version of the American state created by the reformist periods of the first half of the 20th century.

Though what was then sometimes called “the race question” was “complicated” and not something that could be resolved overnight, there was also in elite opinion a general assumption that the South’s system of legalized apartheid was a source of embarrassment and something from the past that the country had to outgrow, even if not any time soon. (Just as is the case today, what is actually more properly called cosmopolitanism was sometimes misportrayed as liberalism: a general belief in pluralism, values tied to cities and urban life.)

I mention all this because, in the early 1950s and 1960s, what we now recognize as the embryonic modern conservative movement could rightly sense that there were assumptions embedded in elite culture that viewed certain of their core values and aims as backward, retrograde, archaic. When the early founders of modern “movement” conservatism looked at America’s elite consensus, they saw a set of assumptions and beliefs embedded in many elite institutions that ran counter to their aims and values. And they were not totally wrong.

Over the course of the 1960s and 1970s they set about trying to build a series of counter-institutions, ones that wouldn’t, in their mind, have their sails angled permanently toward the winds of liberalism. One key moment in this story was the founding of The Heritage Foundation in 1973. Heritage was founded to be the counter to the “liberal” Brookings Institution. But Heritage was never anything like Brookings, even though in the D.C. of the ’80s and ’90s they were routinely portrayed as counterpoints — one representing liberalism and the other conservatism. Brookings was mainstream, stodgy, quasi-academic. Heritage was thoroughly ideological and partisan. In practice it was usually little more than a propaganda mill for the right. This pattern was duplicated countless times. The “liberal” Washington Post was matched by The Washington Times. Fox News, which didn’t come along for another generation, was not so much the answer to CNN as to CBS News, the iconic broadcast news organization of the first decades of the Cold War.

What we see today in Fox News is most of the story: a purported news organization that knowingly and repeatedly reports lies to its viewers, whose chief executive brazenly works with and assists one party’s candidates by sharing confidential information about the other. What has always been the tell about Fox News is the tagline and motto: fair and balanced. The operation’s very branding is an aggressive bit of trolling. An unabashedly partisan and ideological operation selling itself under the heading of “fair and balanced.” It’s less a lie than a knowing taunt.

Here we get to the nub of the issue. Because this is not the entirety of the story. One of the things that is clear from the very start of the conservative movement was a basic failure to quite understand the thing they rallied themselves against, the history that in Bill Buckley’s famous phrase he was standing athwart and yelling “Stop!” None of the organizations that the right took issue with — the think tanks, the news publications, the movie studios, the nonprofits, the book publishers — were ideological, let alone partisan, organizations. When the founders of modern conservatism looked at CBS News they saw the shock troops of liberalism and the Democratic Party. Same with Brookings and the Washington Post and all the rest. And when they went to build their own versions of these institutions they patterned them off their own cartoonish understandings of how these operations functioned. The idea that institutions like CBS News or The New York Times were, whatever their faults and unexamined biases, fundamentally rooted in an ethic of news gathering and reporting was really totally lost on them.

So how do we get from this elemental misunderstanding to the raw and casual lying of the Fox of today? Well, that’s the thing: we don’t. Both were there from the very start. It’s all but impossible to disentangle the culture clash, the inability and refusal to really grasp what these institutions were, and the more open culture of propaganda, lying and mendacity. They’re fused together so tightly that getting your head around the relationship between them is more a matter of meditative absorption than anything that can be processed or explained discursively.

I would add to the above:  Last week we learned via the evidence cited in the summary judgment motion by Dominion Voting Systems that Fox pundits and owner were aware that there was no fraud in the election but broadcasted the allegations of fraud multiple, multiple times after the election.  This week we learned that the Fox pundits and owner wanted to be rid of the vestiges of Trump's Big Lie just before the January 6 insurrection, but then turned around and lied about the insurrection too, and have continued to do so to this day.  

So how does the system rid itself of Fox on cable?  People canceling their cable subscriptions would be a start. Those who have internet access in the home will not miss cable tv.  However many of those who do not have reliable access are probably also those who are most dedicated fans of the network.

If they lose their MAGA cult viewers, they'll lose their advertisers (except for NFL coverage). The real question is whether or not the MAGA cult viewers ever hear about all this.
