The news for Russia is not going to improve. (Reminder: US estimates of UKR casualties are also in the 100K range) 110,000 Dead Russian Soldiers: Putin Is Facing a Historic Disaster in Ukraine(Paragraphs taken from the article) Overall, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense claimed that as of Monday, Ukrainian forces have killed approximately 111,760 Russian troops (and wounded approximately twice to thrice that number), destroyed 285 fighter, attack, bomber, and transport jets, 275 attack and transport helicopters, 3,080 tanks, 2,069 artillery pieces, 6,147 armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles, 434 Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS), 16 boats and cutters, 4,809 vehicles and fuel tanks, 217 anti-aircraft batteries, 1,856 tactical unmanned aerial systems, 183 special equipment platforms, such as bridging vehicles, and four mobile Iskander ballistic missile systems, and 723 cruise missiles shot down by the Ukrainian air defenses. Meanwhile, calls for more security assistance to Ukraine continue to grow. Following the joint U.S. and German decision to send M2/M3 Bradley and Marder Infantry Fighting Vehicles, more countries are willing to send more advanced weapon systems to Ukraine. Finland is the first country to announce that it is willing to send Leopard 2 main battle tanks to Kyiv. Helsinki has conditioned the shipment of the tanks to the willingness of other European nations to also provide main battle tanks to Ukraine. www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/110-000-dead-russian-soldiers-putin-is-facing-a-historic-disaster-in-ukraine/ar-AA169HwG?ocid=msedgdhp&pc=U531&cvid=02f3dc4643324e97ac078a65ff4821d4

There's an old joke with the punchline: "I guess its not your day" Seriously, its starting to look like anything dealing with the Russian military seems to be doomed from the start. Troubles like this should have been apparent to the Soviet Leadership. What is apparent: no one told Putin. Admiral Kuznetsov: Russia’s Only Aircraft Carrier Looks DeadThe Ukrainians believe the carrier is now under a state of emergency. Workers are struggling with the ship at the Zvyozdochka shipyard in the Barents Sea port city of Murmansk. The Russian navy tried to send it to another dry dock, but somehow the engines are not working correctly, leaving the vessel stuck. The ship’s hull reportedly has a problem, and tugboats are struggling to move it. The list of troubles for the Admiral Kuznetsov is long, and 19FortyFive has chronicled its problems extensively. Most recently, the ship had another fire in December, although this one did not cause any casualties. It often breaks down mid-mission, and tugboats have to accompany the carrier on deployments. It lost two airplanes during Russia’s intervention in Syria. It belches black smoke due to its use of a messy fuel called mazut, giving the ship an appearance of ill health. (See article below) www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/admiral-kuznetsov-russia-s-only-aircraft-carrier-looks-dead/ar-AA16bCHy?ocid=msedgntp&cvid=53e1237888444eaab678a6268bbb613eThere's a joke among navies and military around the world the world: Aircraft Carrier = Bomb magnet. Ergo its important not to give your position away. (At least until you get to the operations area.) Parts of the article are here. Just one more thing to reinforce the ineptitude of the Russian military. Russia's Aircraft Carrier Is a Smokey Mess: Here's WhyKey Point: Everyone can see the carrier coming because of its smoke. It comes from the toxic fuel it burns to keep running. Mazut is a heavy petrochemical fuel. While most sources refer it to being taken from the very bottom of a distillation stack, this is inaccurate as "mazut" is a blanket term for very-heavy oil products, including those that can be formed from blending heavier oils with some slightly lighter ones. nationalinterest.org/blog/reboot/russias-aircraft-carrier-smokey-mess-heres-why-163606

Assuming support from the West stays high and Ukraine wins the war, their decision on joining NATO sounds like almost a done deal. As long as somebody like Orban doesn't hold out for some fat Putin cash I suspect they'll be accepted.
If Moldova pushes Russia out as well, and they just might with the help of Ukraine, that creates a pretty solid, contiguous wall against Russia's imperial aggression with the exception of Kalingrad. If Belarus joined as well someday the line would be even cleaner since outer curves are harder to defend than inner curves. Looking farther ahead I think that Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan are bridges too far.

This ... is ... Russia. These are quotes from the linked piece. It is frighteningly familiar to anybody who has followed American conservatism over the past decade or so. Is it any wonder that the GOP is now talking about no longer supporting Ukraine? Russia fits their desired political model so much better.

Once more proving how Putin is a "Genius": The West Calls Putin's BluffKremlin officials and Russian state-controlled media outlets responded to the news of the tanks with outrage. But George Mason University Schar School of Policy and Government professor Mark N. Katz told Newsweek that the message from the West was clear: Putin's rhetoric wasn't going to cause them to back down. "Putin's redlines are designed to deter Western states from crossing them, but Putin has not been able to prevent the West from crossing several of them," Katz said.<SNIP> "The U.S. and NATO do seem to take seriously the possibility that there are some things Ukraine might do which could result in Putin escalating the conflict," he said. Another reason why Ukraine's Western allies may feel emboldened in their support of Ukraine is that Russia for the most part has stumbled in its war efforts, according to Katz.
"If Putin's forces are not doing so well against Ukraine, it is hard to see how they can do better by escalating the conflict by attacking any NATO member," he said.www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/the-west-calls-putin-s-bluff/ar-AA16Mfm7?ocid=msedgdhp&pc=U531&cvid=2237d6e2ee2a454087120b95b3546543

I'm sure many here know the Monty Pithon Holy Grail scene where the knight is says: "It's only a flesh wound." Sometimes Vlad's wartime management reminds me of that' Russia fumes over NATO tanks heading to Ukraine, revealing a Kremlin coming to grips with realityWASHINGTON — Russia responded with anger and scorn after Germany and the United States revealed that they would be supplying Ukraine with powerful, advanced battle tanks. Moscow invoked history and warned of a broader conflict. But in doing so, the Kremlin only highlighted its own political and military constraints. The move was a “blatant provocation,” said Anatoly Antonov, the Russian ambassador to the United States, ahead of President Biden’s announcement on Wednesday afternoon that his administration would send 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine in the coming weeks and months. Germany said the same day that it was sending 14 of its Leopard 2 tanks.“A losing scheme,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. “We have repeatedly said that these tanks go up in flames like all the other armor,” he boasted, even as Russian forces continued to experience astonishing battlefield losses, including an estimated 123,000 soldiers killed and some 3,100 tanks lost. “NATO must be destroyed, there are no other options,” mused Vladimir Solovyov, a prominent state television host whose impassioned tirades are valued by the Kremlin for their reach and visceral appeal. “Of course this is an escalation, of course this is a movement strictly towards nuclear midnight,” said another state television host, Anatoly Kuzichev, referencing the recent decision by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists to move its Doomsday Clock to within 90 seconds of an atomic-weapons exchange. www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/russia-fumes-over-nato-tanks-heading-to-ukraine-revealing-a-kremlin-coming-to-grips-with-reality/ar-AA16LPeM?ocid=msedgntp&cvid=a36e03def9aa4600a5ec9aa6026793ac(ED note: Sounds like a Russian copy of our friend Tokyo Rose Tucker)

Just keep on truckin`Vlad !! Some may not know this, a designation of "Guards" for a unit indicates its an elite force. Based on performance of these other Russian units I'm going to say that's not an accurate description. Beaten Twice In Ukraine, Russia’s Elite 1st Guards Tank Army Is Poised To Attack Yet AgainThe Russian army apparently is repositioning heavy forces in advance of a widely-anticipated winter offensive in Luhansk Oblast in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region. The forces include elements of the elite 1st Guards Tank Army, which has spent months in Belarus, recovering from its near-destruction by Ukrainian brigades during two previous, large-scale operations. A Luhansk offensive would be the 1st Guards Tank Army’s third chance to prove itself in Ukraine. Or, alternatively, a third chance for Ukrainian forces to wreck the formation.
“Ukrainian intelligence relatedly noted that elements of the 2nd Motor Rifle Division of the 1st Guards Tank Army of the Western Military District have withdrawn from Belarus and partially deployed to Luhansk Oblast,” the Washington, D.C.-based Institute for the Study of War noted on Wednesday. www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/beaten-twice-in-ukraine-russia-s-elite-1st-guards-tank-army-is-poised-to-attack-yet-again/ar-AA16R7tR?ocid=msedgdhp&pc=U531&cvid=c538d9eab9854e09b11bcfd7585fee9a

David Frum provides some reality on "negotiations." The heavily pro-negotiation crowd has a lot of splainin' to do on why negotiations with Putin constitute the best, or even a reasonable, course of action when history shows otherwise.

Negotiations are not possible when one of the parties has no desire to give up anything. The same is true domestically.

Unfortunately, western unwillingness to allow Ukraine to attack targets within Russia's internationally accepted borders, forces Ukraine to fight with a hand tied behind its back. Russian missiles are frequently fired from Russian soil or from aircraft launched from Russian airfields. Russia's logistical supplies are warehoused in Russia. It may not be possible to "defeat" Russia under those conditions.

The more I pay attention and the more this war exposes the warts, the more I think that Russia has been treated more seriously for the past few decades than they should have. They are mostly a petro-economy. Their tech is dependent upon other nations and they've been suffering brain drain for some time. Pairing with them on the space station was a feel good project but in 20-20 hindsight it looks like it was a mistake. Their space program suffers from many of the same problems endemic to the nation as a whole.

More information on the "genius" move by Vlad. (Emphasis mine) Russia is 'running out of munitions and has lost as much as 50% of its tanks' in Ukraine, senior US official saysRussia has lost up to half of its tanks in Ukraine since the start of the war and is running low on ammunition, a senior US official said. Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo made the assessment at an event Tuesday held by the Council of Foreign Relations think tank in Washington, DC. In a version of his speech posted online by the Treasury, Adeyemo argue that US-led sanctions on Russian had harmed its economy and limited its ability to replace equipment lost in the war. The sanctions, he said, " degraded Russia's ability to replace more than 9,000 pieces of military equipment lost since the start of the war, forced production shutdowns at key defense facilities, and caused shortages of essential components for tanks and aircraft production. "Russia is also running out of munitions and has lost as much as 50% of its tanks," he continued, and had to "turn to mothballed Soviet-era weapons."*** www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/russia-is-running-out-of-munitions-and-has-lost-as-much-as-50-of-its-tanks-in-ukraine-senior-us-official-says/ar-AA17MDV6?ocid=msedgntp&cvid=846c94c12430456eac3dc54aa7c496e2*** These weapons are not built for survivability in the modern battlefield. Target acquisition by modern tanks would destroy them before they were even in range of the NATO tanks. Notoriously low tech and low dependability. The older tanks have manual transmissions. Its known drivers were issued hammers to help them shift gears
