The main thing I'm looking for right now is to see if the enthusiasm continues. The momentum feels authentic but it's hard to tell. Trump lost the popular vote in both his elections and I don't think he will win it in this one either, but the electoral college is a different matter. It's the enthusiasm in just the right places that will likely carry Harris in that regard.

I read the article.  Vance wrote essays for the Frum Forum. He hadn't yet gone to Yale Law School.  Frum doesn't say what the pseudonym was.

One Vance essay for FrumForum praised former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman as a truer conservative than Texas Governor Rick Perry. Another attacked ethanol subsidies. A third endorsed cuts to the future growth of Medicare and Social Security. (Vance wrote: “Of all the things I can’t stand about politics, the tendency to emotionalize a difficult topic is probably the worst.”) In the course of writing about the Supreme Court, he conceded his support for race-conscious affirmative action.

A fifth essay defended the U.S. war in Iraq against a video released by WikiLeaks showing an Apache helicopter firing upon and killing at least 10 Iraqis. “War will always be a grisly business,” Vance wrote. “I’m not a peacenik, and I supported the Iraq invasion on the merits, but it’s folly to send troops to do the toughest job and then be shocked by the attitude that some show while doing it.” A sixth expressed Vance’s disdain for the rhetorical populism of the Tea Party era. It defended ultraselective elite universities, and championed government by “the best and the brightest.” He wrote: “I was raised primarily by my grandparents in a dying steel town. They taught me that if I worked hard and believed in myself, I could do anything. They were right. This fall I’m headed to Yale Law School, and I’ll join 200 other students—of every color—virtually all of whom scored above the 95th percentile on the LSAT. Our best institutions of higher learning—warts and all—demand excellence from their students.”

Good sleuthing.  I don't remember this stuff at all.  I may have come into it later...about the time Trump was elected.  

It is ironic that back in the earlier time Vance (Bowman, Hamel, whatever else name he used) felt he had a lot in common with Obama...absent fathers, raised by grandparents, went to fancy law school...rose about his upbringing kind of thing.  I say, so what...lots of people I know had divorced parents and were the first of the family to go to college and/or grad school.  If you grew up in a small town this happens a fair amount.  

BTW the article quoted was from May 2022 while Vance was running for US Senate and he said this about Vance:

...The angry-white-male persona of 2017–22 was as perfectly aimed at the Thiel-Trump-Tucker nexus as the earlier iteration had been to the Allen-Aspen-Atlantic one..

Seems like a fair summation.

This is sad.  Schools are afraid to allow their premises to be polling places.  And this will be a cost...elections officials will end up searching for and paying for short term rental commercial spaces.  People are accustomed to going to schools to vote...they tend to not bother to pay attention to the election material and just go to the place they always go to...the local school.

For the first time in as long as anyone can remember, Arizona’s largest public school district isn’t opening its schools to voters as polling sites.

The reasons have been building for years, but the final straw for Mesa Public Schools officials came last November with a small, low-turnout election that became mired in misinformation and menace.

“It was very chaotic,” Assistant Superintendent Scott Thompson recalled. “It was overwhelming.”

Although voting was supposed to be done mostly by mail, mistrust led many voters to drive to the schools to fill out their ballots in person, causing traffic jams and confrontations. Voters confused school staff for election workers and harangued them. Some accused school staff of “disenfranchising voters” for hosting secure ballot drop boxes.

“I couldn’t imagine it in 2024,” Thompson said. “We just don’t know how to make it work.”

At the moment, it looks like instead of racism, sex, etc, the GOP is leaning towards financial disaster and of course WWIII to keep their flock in line.

It strikes me that this surge towards Harris actually is more of a surge away from Trump. He is a bottomless cesspool of negativity. It may come down to Who would you rather sit down and have a beer with?

As long as Harris makes no major missteps, or there isn't an October Surprise (in caps), she (and us) should be OK.

Kari Lake winning the AZ GOP primary may end up being the biggest gift ever given to Democrats. Not only could they hold that Senate seat, it may animate enough voters to give Harris the state.

A surge away from Biden too?  it's always hard to measure but I wonder how many "independents" and people who were going to sit out because of Biden will turn out to vote.

The pundits seem upset that their favored candidate Shapiro isn't going to be the VP nominee.  I think a VP pick doesn't matter much to swing voters unless the VP is of their religious persuasion (think Pence) or if they don't like the VP at all (Palin).  Anything less than those extremes doesn't matter. And Idoubt that swing voters are much impressed if the governor of their state is the nominee.  Maybe they like their governor so much that they want him to remain the governor...the pundits don't seem to consider that.
