Chem PhD and I didn’t, either—I’ve reached the point where I can’t stand the sound of Dolt 45’s voice for longer than a few seconds. However, Dear Son *did*. He came upstairs a couple of times early on, saying that Harris was tending to veer into stump speech territory (my phraseology), rather than answering the actual question that was posed. We could also tell when Trump was speaking—laughter would erupt from downstairs. Both candidates dodged the questions they were asked. Moderators tried a few times to get them to answer but mostly to no avail. Harris did indeed travel down a few of her well-worn rhetorical paths, but she is by far the one still reaching out to those voters that don't know her so it's by design. This debate was not about policy, that just wasn't on the menu no matter what the questions were. This was a debate of dominance, who could dominate the stage, who could dominate the other person. People who had never seen the former president in his full throated rally version got a pretty good look at it last night if they watched. Can they imagine the person they saw last night in the White House dealing with Congress and with foreign officials? Is this the person that should have access to nuclear codes? I'm not sure this is an issues election. Given what happened on 1/6, the current attempts to create Stop the Steal 2.0, and the various indictments and civil court cases are issues the deciding factor for voters? Or is it do they want to return the former president to office under any circumstances?

I hadn't thought of it in these terms. Perhaps because I only saw selected clips from more Harris-friendly sources, I probably missed any display of the 'full throated rally version'.
Most people already seem pretty set in their religious and/or racist mind-sets. Gay marriage and transgender operations at schools? Another way of saying these icky sinners are going to hell. Haitians eating dogs? A more polite way of saying furrin dark skinned people are horrendous and to be feared. Let's get rid of them any way we can. The 'bloody' part is especially appealing to some.
As for Trump himself, he couldn't care less about issues. This election is about winning at all costs to avoid a bad sentence in later November. And other legal problems. If he loses the election, Judge Marchand very well might give him some jail time. I didn't think he would until the sentencing got moved to after the election.

That is an old debate trick to give a quick superficial answer and then veer into distractions. She did it masterfully with immigration morphing into crowd size and bored exhausted maggots. I loved it.

I loved it. I think he actually brought up crowd size while she talked about craziness like Hannibal Lector and wind turbines causing cancer. I was particularly struck by her discussion of the 2020 election...something like "81 million voters fired him and he's having a hard time processing that" said in a sympathetic tone of voice, in the Southern style a "bless his heart" tone.

I think it might be worth your while to see him in action as he gets ramped up on something like the eating of dogs, cats, pets...immigration in general. Simply reading it won't give the flavor and intensity...gotta see it and hear it. I think that's why the "sane washing" that is done is harmful to public knowledge. You gotta see it and hear it to understand it.

You gotta see it and hear it to understand it. Over the years I've watched more than I wanted to of Trump... enough to know I did not want to subject myself to another 90 minutes of it last night. I was curious however, how he had handled himself last night in terms of enthusiasm since I only saw misc clips. More recently at his rallies, the clips I have seen have shown a man with far less vigor or even interest in what he was doing. He seemed bored, and so did his crowds. That said, in the past, he has shown a definite talent of sorts to have taken over a major political party for almost a decade, and at least once won the presidency. But that "talent" seems to be slipping. This evening I saw an interview with the man who played Trump in both Harris' and Clinton's debate practices. He said, after watching Trump closely to better play the part, that Trump seems to have definitely declined since he played the part in 2016.

I loved it. I would say she answered some important questions pretty flawlessly and in detail (e.g., abortion, Ukraine) and used some questions to goad him, which also worked flawlessly.

Here is also a Bonier thread that is pretty interesting reading.
P.S. Just as a word of warning targetsmart is a dem organization so, you know, grain of salt and all that, but they do actually collect their data from secretaries of state (which tend to be slow moving with the data, some are better than others). However, whenever they say we 'modeled' something as they do in this thread, my yellow caution flag comes out.

Harris campaign raised $47M in the 24 hrs after the debate from 600,000 donors.

Here's James Carville opining on the current GOP, Laura Loomer, and more. I find him amusing. Paraphrasing from a few years ago - When your opponent is drowning, throw the SOB an anvil. www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9nUJUR33ls

A comment on a Bulwark podcast About the debate: "She said that dictators want him to win because he's so easily manipulated, and then she demonstrated just how easily he can be manipulated." www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-II4WQEpaE

Maybe Trump can build his last tower on Elba. I live in a blue state and don't have regular tv, so thankfully I don't see many ads. But I have been enjoying the recent political ones. Here are a lot more in one place: www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDvpYQhVO6k

LFC and I can attest it is no fun living in PA. My sympathies. I suggest you both find somewhere else to live until December. It's relatively quiet here in Northern California. Or go abroad.

Somehow that doesn’t surprise me, especially if you were driving in “Pennsyltucky”. In Flori-DUH, there’s more visible Trump support to our north, east, & west, particularly in the Panhandle. As far as ads go in our media market, we’re getting a LOT of Harris ads, a lot of ads both in support and opposition to two proposed constitutional amendments (recreational marijuana and abortion), far fewer ads regarding the Senate race (most of which support Scott, the incumbent), and relatively few Trump ads.

I once drove 2 hours to buy a '78 international scout so I could restore it only to have it sold out from under me on the way after the guy promised to hold it. Waltz was obviously luckier than me. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3N-B0_OKkeg
