A federal grand jury has returned an indictment charging Charles Austin Jenkins, age 66, of Thurmont, Maryland, and Robert Justin Krop, age 36, of Frederick, Maryland, with conspiracy and false statements in order to acquire machineguns. Krop is also charged with illegal possession of machineguns. No court appearance is scheduled for the defendants at this time.

The indictment was announced by Erek L. Barron, United States Attorney for the District of Maryland and Special Agent in Charge Toni M. Crosby of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Baltimore Field Division.

As detailed in the indictment, Charles Jenkins has been the Sheriff of Frederick County since his election in 2006 and was most recently re-elected in 2022. Robert Krop is the principal owner and operator of firearms-related businesses in Frederick County. Krop and his businesses held up to two Federal Firearms Licenses (“FFLs”) that allowed Krop and the business, under certain circumstances, to possess and deal in machineguns.

The six-count indictment alleges that from August 2015 to May 2022, Jenkins and Krop conspired to unlawfully purchase machineguns and falsified multiple documents on the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office letterhead requesting machineguns for evaluation and demonstration to the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office. Krop allegedly drafted these documents for Jenkins’ signature. According to the indictment, Jenkins and Krop knew that there would not be a demonstration of the machineguns to the Sheriff’s Office and that the machineguns were intended for rental to Krop’s customers. Krop also allegedly illegally possessed seven machineguns. The indictment further alleges that Krop’s business offered political support to Jenkins in recognition of his support for the business.

If convicted, Jenkins and Krop face a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison for the conspiracy, for false statements in records maintained by a federal firearms licensee and for false statements to federal law enforcement. If convicted, Krop also faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison for unlawful possession of a machinegun.

Another day, another mass shooting.

A shooting in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, on Monday morning has left six victims, including a police officer, according to preliminary information from a source with direct knowledge of the scene on the ground.

The Louisville Metro Police said they were responding to “an active aggressor” on the 300 block of East Main Street in downtown, adding “there are multiple casualties.” FBI Louisville described the incident as a shooting, and other officials urged residents to stay away from the area.

The source said there were shots exchanged between the shooter and police during the incident. The gunman is “down” and the incident has ended, the source said.

It is unclear if the shooter is one of the six victims. The victims’ conditions are unknown and all have been transported to University Hospital.

For the first 3 months of this year, or 90 days, there were 134 mass shootings with 196 killed and 470 wounded. If mass shootings were just a daily occurrence the number would actually drop quite a bit.

What was new today when the story broke was that the police described the situation as an “active aggressor event”, not an active shooter event. I imagine this is the new GOP Doublespeak that wants to downplay Shooter. As if there would be a mass stabbing or mass clubbing event.

a) The photographer isn't necessarily the person objecting to the photograph.

b) It's a child holding a firearm which means they should have been under tight parent supervision at every moment they had the gun in their hands. If a photographer was able to manipulate the child into that pose then the child was clearly not under proper supervision.

c) Looking at the size of the firearm compared to the child's hands, there was no reason for them to even have been given it to handle.

My guess is that somebody posted this, thinking it was really cool, and that it was either the parent or the parent was aware. And unsafe.

Making a mistake on directions can get you shot.  There was the 16 year old in Kansas City, MO last week.  Not dead, but getting shot is not ever good.  And this 20 year old who was in a car on the wrong dirt driveway in New York State. She is dead. At least the New York shooter was arrested right away.

Turn into wrong driveway leads to killing

HEBRON — A 65-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder after he allegedly shot and killed a 20-year-old Saratoga County woman Saturday evening after the car she was in mistakenly drove up the man’s driveway.

(Sheriff) Murphy said the group mistakenly drove up to a house on Patterson Hill Road, 19 miles northeast of Gillis' residence in Schuylerville. As they attempted to turn the car around, the sheriff said, Kevin D. Monahan came out on his porch and fired two shots, one of which hit Gillis while she was seated in the car. No one from the group had left the car or tried to enter Monahan’s house before he came out and opened fire, Murphy said.

Someone else had called police to report there had been shots fired at the Patterson Hill Road residence. Murphy said when officers arrived, Monahan would not emerge. Authorities spoke with him through a 911 dispatcher and in-person for about an hour before he was taken into custody.

“Monahan was uncooperative with the investigation and refused to exit his residence to speak with police,” the sheriff’s office in a news release. “He was later taken into custody with the assistance of the New York State Police Special Operation Response Team after several hours.”

BTW, not manipulated. There were several pics taken of kids with guns at the NRA convention. Rigorous safety does not seem to be at the forefront.

Even a suggestion that Tennessee might consider a red flag law, which has overwhelming public support, has the NRA out screeching its maximalist demands at the top of their lungs.

Weeks after The Covenant School shooting, the National Rifle Association released a statement regarding the possibility of red flag law in Tennessee.

Governor Bill Lee called on the legislature to pass a red flag law during a pressconference at the Midtown Hills Precinct on Tuesday, April 10.

The bill proposal calls for an order of protection to keep guns out of the hands of people who are a threat to themselves or others. Similar legislation already exists in nineteen states.

Several protests in support of red flag laws have taken place over the last few weeks at the state's capitol. Protesters took caskets to the capitol on Monday during a 'Moral Monday' protest.

In the statement released Tuesday, the NRA called the potential legislation an act of "flow motion", saying that such bills are moving at an alarming pace, calling them a "serious risk" to Second Amendment rights.

One day, seven mass shootings.

The number of mass shootings in the United States on Saturday was higher than on any other day so far in 2023, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit that tracks US gun-related violence.

They spanned across six states, killing at least 10 people. The most deadly was in Alabama, where a shooter targeted a Sweet 16 party, killing four people between the ages of 17 and 23, and injuring an additional 28. Another two people were killed in a shooting at a park in Louisville, Kentucky, where the community was still reeling from a mass shooting at a bank on April 10.

Both CNN and GVA define a “mass shooting” as a shooting that injured or killed four or more people, not including the shooter.

FFS! This is a predictable and predicted outcome of American gun culture, and it's sick, sick, sick.

A 6-year-old girl and her parents were injured by gunfire on Tuesday night after a basketball rolled down a residential street in North Carolina and into a man’s yard, enraging him, neighbors told WSOC-TV.

Witnesses told the station that the gunman ran up and down the street, firing until he ran out of bullets.

The Gaston County Police Department said Wednesday they were still hunting for the alleged gunman, identified as Robert Louis Singletary, a 24-year-old man described as “armed and dangerous.”

The young girl, Kinsley White, was hospitalized after being seriously wounded. She was released overnight, family members told Queen City News. Her father, William White, remains in the hospital.

“He came out with a gun, he started shooting,” Kinsley explained to the outlet. “Hope my daddy is OK.”

Her mother, Ashley Hilderbrand, was grazed by a bullet and treated at the scene. She told WSOC that she heard the gunman make a threat to her husband and daughter: “I’m going to kill you.”

He then chased them, firing, while William White tried to shield Kinsley, Hilderbrand said.

A fourth person was shot at but not injured, police said.

I don't want to hear the pathetic excuse of mental illness. The whole point is that gun culture winds these people up like unstable little tops and convinces them that any offense is murder worthy.

On April 18, Republic Police Department officers were called to a Price Cutter to respond to a call about a robbery in which a man held an employee at gunpoint so that he would be served meat.

Larry Gene Gay, 70, of Springfield, is charged with one felony count of unlawful use of a weapon and a felony count of armed criminal action.

Court documents show that officers responded to the scene and ordered Gay to get out of his truck so they could arrest him. After he was taken into custody, an officer removed a loaded semi-automatic pistol with a bullet in the chamber from Gay’s hip holster.

In an interview, Gay said he went to Price Cutter to buy steaks. He told the “good man” who was helping him that they needed to weigh the steaks. However, the meat department was closed. Gay said at that point, he showed his gun “Just to say I’m not stealing. I need you here to help me to get a couple of these steaks. I’m not going to hurt you.”

The officer asked Gay why he thought the people in the store called police and told them he was threatening them with his gun.

“I don’t know,” Gay said in the interview. “I have no idea.”

The employee said he received a call from the meat department about a man packing his own meat. The employee approached Gay and told him that he could not be there. Gay got upset and said he was going to keep doing what he was doing. The employee said he was not going to help him with the meat.

“Once he held the gun to my throat — pushed it into my throat — I decided to comply,” the employee told police.

At the time of this writing, Gay was being held at the Greene County Jail on a $50,000 bond. He has not yet been scheduled for a court appearance.

Police in South Florida said they will not charge a neighbor for shooting at a car being used by a grocery delivery worker who ended up at the wrong address.

Officials in Davie, a town about 26 miles north of Miami, announced Friday that charges would not be recommended against the gunman, Antonio Caccavale,43, because his actions were justified by his fear.

Likewise, police said, the Instacart driver will not be charged because he acted based on their own assessment of danger when the vehicle, moving erratically, struck a boulder and the shooter's foot.

Investigators said they did not have video of the incident and thus had to rely on the narratives of each side, which each had its own chronology and facts.

"Each party appear justified in their actions based on the circumstances they perceived," Detective Patrick Di Cintio said in a supplement to the police report on the matter.

It wasn't clear if the detective concluded the shooting was justified based on Florida's controversial "stand your ground" law, the first in the nation, which states that residents have no duty to retreat before using potentially deadly force to defend life, family, and property.

The way the author divided up the country is very interesting and very rooted in how they were initially settled, creating local cultures and norms that still exist today.

Gun Violence Is Actually Worse in Red States. It’s Not Even Close.
America’s regions are poles apart when it comes to gun deaths and the cultural and ideological forces that drive them.

In reality, the region the Big Apple comprises most of is far and away the safest part of the U.S. mainland when it comes to gun violence, while the regions Florida and Texas belong to have per capita firearm death rates (homicides and suicides) three to four times higher than New York’s. On a regional basis it’s the southern swath of the country — in cities and rural areas alike — where the rate of deadly gun violence is most acute, regions where Republicans have dominated state governments for decades.

If you grew up in the coal mining region of eastern Pennsylvania your chance of dying of a gunshot is about half that if you grew up in the coalfields of West Virginia, three hundred miles to the southwest. Someone living in the most rural counties of South Carolina is more than three times as likely to be killed by gunshot than someone living in the equally rural counties of New York’s Adirondacks or the impoverished rural counties facing Mexico across the lower reaches of the Rio Grande.

The reasons for these disparities go beyond modern policy differences and extend back to events that predate not only the American party system but the advent of shotguns, revolvers, ammunition cartridges, breach-loaded rifles and the American republic itself. The geography of gun violence — and public and elite ideas about how it should be addressed — is the result of differences at once regional, cultural and historical. Once you understand how the country was colonized — and by whom — a number of insights into the problem are revealed.

To do so you need to more accurately delineate America’s regional cultures. Forget the U.S. Census divisions, which arbitrarily divide the country into a Northeast, Midwest, South and West using often meaningless state boundaries and a willful ignorance of history. The reason the U.S. has strong regional differences is because our swath of the North American continent was settled by rival colonial projects that had very little in common, often despised one another and spread without regard for today’s state boundaries.

Another "responsible gun owner."

Five people were fatally shot, including an 8-year-old, in a Cleveland, Texas, home after a Friday night rampage that started with a noise complaint about gunfire, according to the San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office.

The gunman, who remains at large, was apparently shooting a rifle in his yard when neighbors asked him to stop because a baby was trying to sleep, San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers said. The suspect then opened fire on the neighbors, Capers said.

Authorities found the victims Friday night after receiving a harassment report about 11:30 p.m. local time, the sheriff said.

“The victims, they came over to the fence said, ‘Hey, could you mind not shooting out in the yard. We have a young baby that is trying to go sleep,’” Capers said.

The suspect, who had been drinking, responded, “I’ll do what I want to in my front yard.”

A doorbell camera at the home of the victims at some point captured the suspect approaching with his rifle, Capers said.

Multiple people were shot around the residence, Capers said. Two female victims in a bedroom were found laying over two young children who survived, he added.

“They were trying to take care of them babies and keep them babies alive,” Capers said of the victims.

The victims were shot above the neck at close range – “almost execution style,” according to Capers.

Outside of this particular scumbag being a murderer, both operating a firearm while under the influence and shooting in a front yard, especially something as powerful as an AR, should cause anybody to instantly lose their right to own or operate any firearm for, at the very least, a period of years. More than once and it should be life. The weapon should, of course, be confiscated and never returned. These are laws that any responsible gun owner should approve of.

And seeing as it's in Texas, you should be able to sue anybody for $10,000 for improper use of a firearm. And no, they can't countersue for their legal fees.
