A Louisiana man was arrested after allegedly shooting his 14-year-old neighbor in the back of her head on Sunday, according to local authorities. The man told police he had “unknowingly” hit the girl after opening fire on a group of people running away from his home—kids playing hide-and-seek–as it later turned out.

In the “early morning hours” of the day, according to a news release from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to a tiny Lake Charles neighborhood for a reported shooting.

After the wounded teenage girl was found at the scene, detectives were summoned, discovering that several children had been playing in the area, hiding on a neighbor’s property.

“When detectives spoke with the property owner, David V. Doyle, 58, [of] Starks, he stated he observed shadows outside his home, at which time he went inside and retrieved his firearm,” the sheriff’s office said.

Doyle then told the investigators he went back outside and began firing at the people he saw running away from his home.

The girl was taken to a hospital out of town with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the sheriff’s office. Family members told KPLC 7 News, a local NBC affiliate, that she was “okay and recovering.”

I do feel sorry for this guy's family and friends and we shouldn't make fun of him, but really this sort of story needs to be spread around to the "guns make us safer" crowd. I'm sure they'll write it off as well the guy was negligent...but the point is that had he obeyed the law and not brought the gun he wouldn't have shot himself.

A man who attended the Lenoir City High School graduation Friday night died after a gun he was illegally carrying on school property fired accidentally, according to Lenoir City Police Chief Don White.

Christopher Sean Lampkin was shot in his right inner thigh when his gun went off after watching the commencement at the football field, according to a Lenoir City Police Department report obtained by WATE 6 on Monday.

A bullet from a .38 caliber Derringer struck a femoral artery causing significant blood loss. The death has been ruled accidental.

The narrative in the report states that Lampkin and a relative were sitting on steps waiting for their Uber to arrive when Lampkin stood up to put his jacket on. The family member told police that’s when, “… she heard a small ‘pop.’ ”

The report said Lampkin looked down at his leg and said “Hey, I’m bleeding,” then fell to the ground.

Lenoir City is in East Tennessee.

Welcome to firearms training. People in or formerly in law enforcement are often teaching these courses and, while they do have a strong focus on safe handling, they are also driving the "be afraid for your life at all times" message ... hard. (NYT archived link)

I did not grow up around guns, but 10 years ago, I started attending firearms training classes. I wasn’t there to learn how to protect myself or my family. I was there to learn what was taught in the classes themselves, which a broad coalition of groups — including many police officers, Republican and Democratic legislators and gun violence prevention organizations — have hailed as a path out of the nation’s epidemic of violence.

I found something very different. The classes I attended trained students to believe that their lives are in constant danger. They prepared us to shoot without hesitation and avoid legal consequences. They instilled the kind of fear that has a corrosive effect on all interactions — and beyond that, on the fabric of our democracy.

I took 42 classes and conducted interviews with 52 instructors and 118 students, in traditionally red states like Texas as well as blue states like Massachusetts, in urban areas like Newark as well as rural Southern Illinois. (The instructors knew I was there to conduct research; in keeping with my university’s academic protocols, I had permission to take notes in class and to record interviews but not to publish anyone’s names.) Most of all, I immersed myself in firearms schools in Texas, where I live, that cater to people who wish to learn how to use guns for self-defense. Some instructors in these schools told me they have been involved in drafting public safety protocols or running active shooter drills for public school teachers. Some of these instructors’ students have gone on to open training programs of their own.

First, the good news: Every firearms instructor I encountered was extremely serious about preventing accidents. When a student inadvertently pointed his gun at me for a moment, our instructor immediately chastised him. And when the student objected, saying he didn’t have his finger on the trigger, the instructor became livid and threatened to kick him out of class.

But teaching people how to avoid shooting someone by accident is a small part of what these classes are about. The primary lessons are about if and when to shoot someone on purpose. And this is where the trouble begins.

Instructors repeatedly told me that a big part of their job was to make people feel vulnerable, to make them aware of dangers they were not conscious of before to understand that bad things can happen at any time. One instructor told me he encourages students to carry their gun at all times. If students say they plan to leave it in the car, he responds, “So what you’re telling me is the only time you are ever going to get attacked is if you are in your car?”

The instructors describe a world teeming with violent and deranged individuals. And not just any individuals. The scenarios cluster around the public spaces of racially diverse cities. “More often than not,” an instructor who had been a high-ranking police officer said, the place you’re likely to be attacked is “in an urban part of society.” Another instructor, also a former police officer, tells students to keep their gas tanks filled at least halfway to avoid situations in which “it’s the middle of the night and you need to get gas in downtown Houston.”

Outside a restaurant in Austin, an instructor saw a disheveled man sitting on the curb and nudged me in the other direction, directing me to pick up the pace. He said he had detected “potential predatory behavior” and wasn’t sure if this man was a panhandler or someone about to stick a gun in our faces.

Instructors repeatedly told me that statistics about crime are meaningless when it comes to the need to carry a gun. It’s not the odds, I heard on numerous occasions; it’s the consequences. I have been taught strategies for avoiding interactions with strangers. I have participated in scenario training sessions in which students carrying guns loaded with plastic ammunition enact mock burglaries, home invasions, mass shootings and attacks by Islamic terrorists. Repeatedly the lesson was that I ought to shoot even when my instincts might tell me otherwise.

For example, in one scenario, an instructor pretended to punch someone I know and care about in the head. The instructor’s back was toward me, so I held my fire. Later, I told him that I hadn’t had enough information to act. Wrong answer. Being punched in the head can be fatal, the instructor told me, so there was no time to wait. I had never heard someone advocate shooting an unarmed person in the back. The instructor did it with a sense of moral, legal and tactical clarity and conviction.

Officially, the message is caution. A line I heard from multiple instructors was: If you are not about to die in the next three seconds, don’t pull the trigger. If you are not 100 percent sure, then don’t shoot. But relentlessly harping on the dangers that surround us changes the way students assess those risks.

I experienced it myself.

Calls are growing for an arrest to be made in Florida after a Black mother of four was shot and killed by her White neighbor through the neighbor’s door — apparently over a dispute involving the victim’s children.

The neighbor had reportedly thrown roller skates at the children Friday, after which their mother knocked on the neighbor’s door to confront her about “harming the children,” according to a police report. The neighbor allegedly fired a gun from behind the door, hitting the mother.

Officials identified the victim as Ajike S. Owens, 35, also known as “AJ.” They said the suspect is a 58-year-old White woman, whom they did not identify.

The county sheriff said his office could not make an arrest in the shooting until authorities determined whether the use of force had been justified under Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law. The law states that a person can use deadly force if they reasonably believe it could “prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another.”

Lawyers representing Owens’s family said the shooting was “unjustified,” and alleged that the shooter had used racist language against Owens’s children. Racial dynamics were at play, said civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who is representing members of Owens’s family, in a statement calling for the alleged shooter’s arrest.

Around 9 p.m. Friday, deputies received a call about possible trespassing at a property in Ocala, Fla., approximately 50 miles south of Gainesville, Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said Monday during a news conference. When the officers arrived, they found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound, Woods said. They tried to save her but she later died, Woods said, calling it a “tragic” incident.

Alas, when I saw “Ocala,” my reaction was, “Figures.” That’s some pretty serious MAGAt territory. It’s telling that the name of the shooter is being withheld…

I will concede that one fact does give me pause (bold mine):

Woods, the sheriff, citing information from the alleged shooter, said “there was a lot of aggressiveness” at the door from both neighbors, “whether it be banging on the doors, banging on the walls and threats being made.”

Friday’s incident appeared to have been tied to “a neighborhood feud over time,” Woods said.

Police collected two firearms, bullets and other evidence at the scene, the report showed. Many details of the report were redacted by the sheriff’s office.

Since the shots were fired from inside the residence, were *both* firearms recovered from inside the building? OTOH, the heavy redaction gives me pause as well. We’re left to speculate about an awful lot.

Cops Charge Guy Who Shot Himself During Dream About Burglar

A Dunedin man will not face charges after he fired 30 rounds from his AR-15 rifle at his pool cleaner whom he mistook for an intruder earlier this month, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri announced on Monday.

Jana and Bradley Hocevar were watching a movie at their home at about 9 p.m. on June 15 when Jana Hocevar heard noise coming from their lanai, Gualtieri said at a news conference Monday morning. Jana Hocevar, 43, said she saw an unfamiliar man within feet of the sliding glass doors and called 911.

Notice the term "within fee." He never tried to enter the home, he was just close and scared the homeowner, so according to Florida authorities opening fire through a closed door is all a part of standing your ground. Then there's this.

The audio from the 911 call reveals Bradley Hocevar fired two rounds through the sliding glass door. Polek ran away after the first two rounds, but the Hocevars could not see because the blinds were closed and they were taking cover behind their couch.

The 911 dispatcher on the phone and Jana Hocevar repeatedly pleaded with Bradley Hocevar to put down the rifle and stop firing. But 47 seconds after the first two rounds, Bradley Hocevar fired a few more rounds. Finally, about 25 seconds later, Bradley Hocevar unloaded his AR-15′s magazine — meaning he fired 30 rounds in about 90 seconds, Gualtieri said.

Polek sustained minor injuries from shrapnel and flying glass, but was not hit directly by the bullets.

So two rounds fired at somebody he could see and 28 (twenty f***ing eight!) rounds fired blindly into the neighborhood, but no charges filed. These people are insane.

A Connecticut man is recovering after authorities say he accidentally shot himself in a grocery store Saturday.

Citing the Manchester Police Department, WVIT-TV reports officers were called to a Stop & Shop parking lot for a report of a man who unintentionally shot himself.

Police say a 23-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound after his gun inadvertently fired in the store.

The man took himself to the hospital and is in stable condition, the outlet reports.
