I know it's hard to keep all the criminals in the GOP straight but let's not forget Santos.
That mysterious $700000 loan that Santos made to his campaign? The one nobody could figure out where he got the money from to make the loan? Well, there was no loan. He made it up in order to get over the fundraising threshold required for the GOP congressional committee to help his campaign. Even funnier is that he has been paying himself back for the non-existent loan from his campaign funds.

Steve Scalise is the choice? Not really. Bottom line: We're never going to get to a functioning House. So government shut down, here we come.

Not exactly a resounding victory and while they did not embrace Scalise they did at least reject Jordan (for now anyway). Jordan was endorsed by Trump adding to his list of losses.

And Scalise drops out of the speaker race. Jordan does not seem to have enough support either but as far as I know he is last guy standing...

So far the chaos caucus is getting what it wants...immobilized government, a pending shut down, and lots of hits on right wing media plus small dollar donations.

Yeah, who the hell knows what happens now? The 'not Jim Jordan but I can't remember his name because he threw his hat in the ring at the last possible second' candidate still got almost half the votes though, so there is a lot of distance between Jordan and the gavel. It's possible he gets there and it's possible nobody in the entire GOP conference can get the votes. When you give enough monkeys a flamethrower then the world just burns.

McCarthy is still busy blaming Democrats for his ouster. Let's review the last 5 GOP speakers for just one second:
Gingrich: pushed out Hastert: goes to jail---indirectly---for pedophilia Boehner: pushed out Ryan: quits McCarthy: ousted
Yes, apparently it's the Democrats that are the problem.

Don't you know that those DEMONCRATS actually ARE the cause of every problem America has? The sooner we eliminate them from the country, the sooner we can Make America Great Again!!! Do your own research! </snark>

McCarthy is mad at the Democrats for voting for the continuing resolution that excluded Ukrainian aid. I think he was expecting them to vote against it so the government would be shut down and he could blame the Democrats for not supporting the CR. Yeah I'm sure he thinks it was a diabolical plot to make him look bad to the House Republicans.
And gosh why is the Republican majority in the House so small? Because Democrats won almost half of the Congressional seats.

It appears to me election results are no longer relevant to the GOP even in their own ranks. The entire purpose of a house caucus is to internally debate an issue, vote on a preferred course of action, and then present a unified front against the other party on the floor. Everybody gets a voice but the result of the caucus vote is respected because it is necessary to prevail in our system. See, e.g., every democrat voting for Jeffries.
But Republicans are now constantly dismissing the results of their own internal votes while pettily refusing to call the other party the 'democratic' party. Seems to me it is their title by default.

Combine this tweet with indy's comment above and the problem is clear. Democracy works fine for the most part, but a certain political party or a group of people within it don't like the result of democracy and so they seek other means to get their way.

I think the issue is that what they REALLY want isn't achievable within any political system that runs on the economic engine of capitalism. What they want is kind of a rewinding of the cultural clock which is challenging in its own right under any political structure but maybe it's potentially achievable to some degree with a sufficiently authoritarian and economically isolated regime. See, e.g., North Korea. I have a hard time believing however that it is possible when resources are allowed to flow to people and directed at things they want to pay for, with companies wanting access to ways to influence them. Then you end up with hollywood, taylor swift, iphones, internet, and the NFL. It's capitalism that feeds cultural change not the political system.
What we are seeing is just a trashing about but even with Donald Trump, Jim Jordan, and a right wing SCOTUS you still can't achieve what they want.

Twenty Rs voted *against* Gym in the first round of Speaker voting. From WaPo:
“Some,” huh? Do the math, Congressman. Try “at least sixteen of the twenty.”

“Some,” huh? Do the math, Congressman. Try “at least sixteen of the twenty.” Did Jordan think that getting people "on the record" would force them to support him despite their private dislike of him for fear of being primaried? He doesn't seem to be the sort of person who will try to make promises like McCarthy did to get votes. I just have night mares of him on the dais running the House as he does the Weaponization Comm....bombastic statements, yelling over people...not the way to run the House or a democracy.

Looks like Gym is giving himself and his buddies the overnight hours to twist arms (WaPo):
This could get interesting: Does Gym’s support go up or down on subjects votes?
