The news outlets all appear to be saying either he will get one or two more votes or lose five or six. None of them I saw are predicting he will get the votes he needs to win. Hard to tell what will happen with this lot though obviously.
Democrats seem to be preparing to give McHenry more power in limited time frames. I am not sure what they might be asking for in return but I doubt it's nothing. Some Republicans appear to be talking about that as well. Seems like the most likely way forward to me.

He lost a net of 2 in the second vote.

According to every signal I get from both sides of the isle, that DOES nail it. Boehner absolutely hated Jordan.
Rumor is that the opposition to Jordan is solidly 25-30 against. They are apparently taking turns changing their votes from election to election just to mess with him.

Yeah that's grimly funny and he probably deserves it but there is business to be done. Is it going to take 15 ballots before he gets the hint that his bomb throwing BS is not wanted.

Reports are this morning that Jordan has 'suspended' his campaign for Speaker and will support added power for McHenry until January when he will try again.

Jordan loses the third vote with 25 Republicans votes against him, so 20 -> 22 -> 25. Have Republicans finally found some sort of red line? You know, maybe the guy who was up to his eyeballs in an insurrection? The same eyeballs that apparently weren't working at Ohio State?

And Jordan is officially out. Reportedly there were 112 votes in the secret GOP conference ballot against him and only 87 for him. I guess they are now going to try to pick someone else.

Sadly I believe that Bannon is pulling Goetz's strings and maybe Jordan too. It's going exactly to his plan which is to shut government down one way or the other. The below is still funny.

Does he have a family? One that actually lives with or near him? That was mean but deserved. My kid wrestled and I recognized Jordan's body type and attitude immediately. Don't get me wrong, there are some great coaches but there were also the Jordans of the sport. I wouldn't vote for the latter for dog catcher.

Tom Emmer becomes Speaker Designate after winning a 6 way race in the GOP conference. Drops out 4 hours later after Trump undercuts him. Crazy.

Crazy like a fox (the animal). If you can't shut down the government by failing to fund it directly, you do it by shutting down the House so it will definitely fail to fund it by the deadline laid out in the Continuing Resolution.

According to Rep. Ralph Norman on C-SPAN a bit ago, they are staying in conference until they pick someone, all night if necessary. How that happens is anybodies guess, but good luck with that.

Well now it's time for some guy named Johnson from Louisiana to be stuck in the barrel. According to Wikipedia he has all the religious right wing credentials needed. He appears to have made a legal career in "religious freedom" cases and is associated with the Alliance Defending Freedom and a nonprofit law firm called Freedom Guard. I am coming to the understanding that use of the word freedom signifies right wing religion. Let's see if he can get more than Jeffries does in a floor vote.

It happened, and quickly, too: www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/10/25/house-speaker-vote/Yup, all the RW religion credentials. My takeaway so far is at least it isn’t Gym Jordan…for whatever that’s worth.

A person on LGM said Johnson is 20% less a*%hole than Jordan is...for whatever that's worth. The chaos caucus has won...the Republican Party in the House is now controlled by it. That's is what I've learned from the last two weeks.

Two guys from Louisiana hold the top two leadership positions in the House. One described himself as David Duke without the baggage and the other supports a national abortion ban. This is going to go well.

This is going to go well. Government shutdown here we come unless the Democrats save their bacon again. I don't know what terms they can force. ETA: The center Republicans showed they weren't really center. They just didn't like Scalise and were offended by the pressure campaign including threats that came in connection with Jordan. And the former president has enough power over the House Republicans that he can veto anyone he chooses.

Giving the speakership to a guy with no leadership experience, a national total abortion ban ambition and election denialism seems like a gift to Democrats since that appears to be driving turnout for them but I guess time will tell. McCarthy also had a lot of fundraising experience and brought in a ton of money for the party.

McCarthy also had a lot of fundraising experience and brought in a ton of money for the party. I fear there's enough dark money flowing that it will make up for any losses with McCarthy gone. And I'm cynical enough to believe that the donors in McCarthy's rolodex will give money anyway on the assumption that they will be able to keep their favorite tax breaks and loopholes in place. The new guy is spouting oil guy language about climate change so that will keep the petroleum dollars flowing to Republicans as well.

So here we are with Congressional leaders making a deal to pass a continuing resolution to keep the government running until just before Christmas again. This is after House Republicans tried and failed to tie the SAVE Act which was to outlaw noncitizen voting which is already illegal to a continuing resolution. This has become so routine that the media seems to ignore it. Yeah it's a weird presidential election season and there are pagers exploding and bombs bursting in the Middle East but tales of pet eating and a candidate's posting on gross chat groups are just so interesting that the budget can be ignored? I realize I'm kind of nerd but I think a governmental budget is worth spending some time talking about.

This crap is causing meteorologists to get death threats. These people are too stupid to live but it's other people that get to do the dying.
