Tucker Carlson didn’t address an anti-Semitic tweet by Kanye West after speaking with the rapper in a softball interview last week. In fact, the Fox News host continued to support the musician.

Last week, West raised eyebrows after donning a “White Lives Matter” shirt at Paris Fashion Week, along with right-wing pundit Candace Owens, who is also Black. The slogan is a rebuttal of sorts to Black Lives Matter, which was created to raise awareness of police brutality.

Later in the week, Carlson aired an interview he did with West over two episodes. The Fox News host visited West’s office, where he tasted drinks and wore a pair of 3D-printed boots. During the interview, West suggested employees of retail giant The Gap may have had advanced notice of the Uvalde school shooting and he also claimed, “Nike is gerrymandering Black people.”

Then over the weekend, West posted an anti-Semitic tweet that Twitter has since deleted.

“I’m a bit sleepy tonight but when I wake up I’m going death con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE The funny thing is I actually can’t be Anti Semitic because black people are actually Jew also You guys have toyed with me and tried to black ball anyone whoever opposes your agenda,” he wrote just before midnight on Saturday.

Twitter locked West out of his account as a result.

“Death con 3” is seemingly a reference to DEFCON 3, a state of heightened alert used by the U.S. Armed Forces against potential threats. West’s tweet was widely condemned, though not by Owens, who defended it on Monday.

Later that night, she appeared on Tucker Carlson Tonight, where the two spoke about the “White Lives Matter” shirts. Neither brought up West’s anti-Semitic tweet during the five-minute segment.

Owens told Carlson the shirt was “artistic expression” that exposes “stunning hypocrisy”:

For years, we were told that “Black Lives Matter” was not an exclusionary phrase. We were told that, “It’s just what we’re saying. We’re not trying to leave White people out. We’re just saying this because this is a moment that Black Americans need to have in this country.” They were totally fine when “Asian Lives Matter” became a slogan as well.

Owens added that “there’s a hatred toward White people in this country. It is undeniable.”

Carlson wrapped up the segment without having mentioned West’s hateful comments about Jews.

A little over a week before the midterm elections, Carlson described the high price the average American would pay if the U.S. did indeed run out of diesel and claimed the country was on this disastrous path so that President Joe Biden and the Democrats could “fight that progressive crusade in Ukraine.”

“But many in Washington agree with him in both parties. They would like to see World War Trans immediately,” added Carlson – echoing bizarre claims from Jordan Peterson over the summer that Vladimir Putin was somehow justified in invading Ukraine to stop the spread of “degenerate” Western culture.

“So, so what is this jihad going to mean for you? Well, the details are stunning,” Carlson began, warning everyday Americans of how their lives will change for the worse:

Tucker Carlson on Thursday attacked the Food and Drug Administration’s proposed ban on menthol cigarettes as being part of a “war against happiness,” and said those in the government agency have it out for the “working man” who just wants to enjoy himself.

Speaking to Richard Marianos, a former assistant director of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Carlson asked, “Do you have any idea why they are hassling Black smokers—or any smokers? Smokers have already been hassled, I would say. Why are they doing this?”

The FDA’s proposal would primarily affect Black smokers, nearly 85 percent of whom use menthol-flavored products (compared to 30 percent of white smokers), according to data included in the agency’s announcement in April. That announcement also cites research finding that the ban would “lead an additional 923,000 smokers to quit, including 230,000 African Americans in the first 13 to 17 months after a ban goes into effect.” Black men, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, have the highest rates of lung cancer in the U.S.

“This is the biggest question and the most difficult thing I have ever encountered in my 30 years of law enforcement,” Marianos replied, “because it creates more problems for the police on the street and for the communities and their quality of life than anything I’ve seen since Prohibition. This is Prohibition again, and somebody here in the 202 area code needs to revise their history and realize that Prohibition doesn’t work.”

Marianos is among those who have predicted that the ban would backfire by creating a black market where police end up targeting Black men for petty offenses. Divisions emerged in the Congressional Black Caucus, for instance, over the proposal in light of the possibility of such an unintended consequence.

After Marianos claimed a ban is “not going to work in any way,” Carlson suggested a motive for it: harming Americans’ well-being.

“Maybe it’s just a war against happiness. No one wants to say it, but people smoke because it makes them happy,” the Fox host said. “Like, you shouldn’t smoke, it’s bad for you, whatever. Again, it’s hardly the worst thing people are doing right now. Maybe they just can’t stand the idea that some working-class guy is enjoying himself.”

I'm shocked he'd refer to blacks as "working-class." That's a step up for him.

Florida Republican congressman Matt Gaetz insisted Thursday that had he joined the vast majority of his colleagues in standing and applauding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky before his speech to lawmakers Wednesday, it would have been a “North Korea-style” act.

Appearing on Tucker Carlson’s show, the right-wing representative was introduced as “one of the very few” lawmakers “who didn’t follow the rules and stand up and applaud like a seal as a foreign leader in a sweatshirt lectured our country.” Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) also remained seated beside Gaetz, while Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) skipped the event altogether.

Carslon, who has made a habit of harping on the war-time leader’s attire, further set the tone for the interview by saying what Gaetz did has been viewed as a “thought-crime”—as if there haven’t been enough references to the novel 1984 lately.

“How much do you love Putin that you didn’t applaud last night,” asked the Fox News host facetiously. (Carlson himself once said that he was rooting for Russia amid its tensions with Ukraine—a comment that he later claimed was a joke.)

“I feel no compunction to go out and applaud some foreign leader from a historically corrupt country who is begging for more than the hundred billion dollars that the Congress has already set to send them,” Gaetz said. Earlier on Thursday, the Senate approved an omnibus spending bill which included nearly $50 billion in aid to the country.

Continuing his firehose of Putin's talking points Tuckums is now screeching about Zelensky's war on Christians. I'm suuuure that the fact that Zelensky is a Jew has nothing to do with it. Even TDB's pet conservative can't swallow this one.

“If you were a Republican office holder, and Zelensky came to Washington, maybe you would, for a moment, ask him about his current and ongoing war against Christianity in Ukraine,” said my former boss, Tucker Carlson, on his Fox News show on Wednesday night.

Tucker continued: “You will not hear a word on television tonight about the fact that Zelensky has banned an entire ancient Christian denomination in Ukraine, and then seized churches, and then thrown priests in jail,” he said. “According to Mitch McConnell—who apparently hasn’t left his office since the mid-’80s—anti-Christian despotism is what most Republicans want above all.”

He was referring to Ukraine’s decision in early December to effectively shut down the Moscow-linked Russian Orthodox Church in the country. The reason? As Christianity Today reported, Ukrainian authorities say they have “uncovered large amounts of cash, ‘dubious’ Russian citizens, and leaflets calling on people to join the Russian army…Other material cited as evidence included prayer texts of ROC patriarch Kirill and a video of hymn singing that celebrated Russia’s ‘awakening.’”

It’s easy to understand why Zelensky wants to prevent a fifth column spy network from operating in Ukraine. However, his actions provide fodder to prove he is at war with Christianity.

The charge that Zelensky is at war with Christianity is potentially a potent wedge issue on the right, particularly as Republicans, many of whom are Christian (and many of whom are increasingly skeptical of foreign entanglements) take control of the U.S. House of Representatives next month. Most Republicans still support aiding Ukraine, but support is declining. If this narrative takes hold, it is sure to negatively impact our role as an ally.

Russia knows this. Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, wasted no time in casting Zelensky as an enemy of Christendom, saying, “The current Ukrainian authorities have openly become enemies of Christ and the Orthodox faith.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov went so far as to accuse Ukraine of “waging a war on the Russian Orthodox Church.”

But is it true? It seems to me that if Zelensky is actually waging a war on Christianity, then it is an ill-advised war against his own constituents. According to the Pew Research Center, 78 percent of Ukrainians identify as Orthodox (a higher percentage than exists in Russia).

Meanwhile, only “14 percent of the public called themselves faithful to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate…” That leaves a lot of Christians with whom Zelensky isn’t at war with.

“Consider what is happening tonight in Brazil,” he said. “Thanks to what was very clearly a rigged election, a convicted criminal – Lula da Silva – is now the president of the most important country in South America. Millions of people in Brazil understand exactly what happened. They know that their democracy has been hijacked, possibly forever.”

Carlson was alluding to the fact that Lula, who was president from 2003 to 2011, was convicted of corruption. However, Brazil’s high court annulled the convictions, which Lula said were politically motivated.

We All Saw This Coming

The challenge this morning is how to alert you to a big dump of new misinformation without amplifying and validating it. The good news: This is an easier task when Kevin McCarthy and Tucker Carlson are involved because it is so transparent.

The speaker of the House gives special exclusive access to the security footage of the Jan. 6 attack on Congress to the leading propagandist minimizing, dismissing, and counter-programming the failed coup. What did you think was going to happen?

Monday night, Carlson began using the footage (much of which was already turned over to defense attorneys for the Jan. 6 rioters) to reinforce and continue to promulgate his made-up narrative that the attack consisted of peaceful “sightseers” touring the Capitol under escort:

More than 44,000 hours of surveillance footage from in and around the Capitol have been withheld from the public, and once you see the video, you’ll understand why. Taken as a whole, the video does not support the claim that Jan. 6 was an insurrection. In fact, it demolishes that claim.

Reporters who have covered the Jan. 6 attack and the criminal justice aftermath spent Monday evening debunking the Carlson segment in various ways: the footage isn’t actually new or unseen, it was selectively presented by Carlson, things he claimed were new or unknown were old and known, etc.

But of course the game plan here isn’t for McCarthy to simply provide Carlson with new fodder for predictable if outrageous segments on his show. In a pattern we all know too well, the Carlson segment takes the raw material and transmogrifies into even better, more useful fodder for all manner of elected Republicans, Jan. 6 deniers, other right-wing news outlets, and MAGA world.

Republicans have been pressed on their reactions to Tucker Carlson’s inaccurate portrayal of the insurrection on January 6, 2021 as peaceful, with many criticising his mischaracterisation of the violent attack on the Capitol.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy handed over more than 40,000 hours of surveillance footage from the attack, allowing the Fox News host to cherry-pick moments from the siege on Congress by Trump supporters to pretend that they were simply “orderly and meek” sightseers.

“I think it’s bulls***,” Republican North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis told reporters, according to Rolling Stone. “I was here. I was down there and I saw maybe a few tourists, a few people who got caught up in things. Carlson continues to tell the lie that Nancy Pelosi was in charge of the Capitol Hill PD. He's nothing if not shameless.

In a lengthy segment Monday, under the banner “TUCKER INVESTIGATES,” Fox News host Tucker Carlson aired video clips that, he claimed, showed the House panel investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol had lied to the country in its public hearings and report last year and hid crucial evidence.

“Committee members lied about what they saw and then hid the evidence from the public,” Carlson said.

Carlson rolled clips of calmer moments of the attack on the Capitol while telling his millions of viewers that it was not, in fact, a deadly insurrection, but rather “mostly peaceful chaos.”

“Keep in mind the Capitol Police as a force is controlled by the speaker of the House,” Carlson said as the segment concluded. “And at that point it was Nancy Pelosi.”

But that claim has been fact checked as false by multiple national news organizations. The former House speaker was not in charge of security at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. So why, since 2021, has it been a common refrain for prominent right-wing politicians and cable news opinion hosts?
